Biochemistry and Physiology of Plant Hormones

by T.C. Moore

Biochemistry and Physiology of Plant Hormones is intended primarily as a textbook or major reference for a one-term ;intermediate-Ievel or ad vanced course dealing with hormonal regulation of growth and develop ment of seed plants for students majoring in biology, botany, and applied botany fields such as agronomy, forestry, and horticulture. Additionally, it should be useful to others who wish to become familiar with the topic in relation to their principal student or professional interests in related fields. It is assumed that readers will have a background in fundamental biology, plant physiology, and biochemistry. The dominant objective of Biochemistry and Physiology of Plant Hor mones is to summarize, in a reasonably balanced and comprehensive way, the current state of our fundamental knowledge regarding the major kinds of hormones and the phytochrome pigment system. Written pri marily for students rather than researchers, the book is purposely brief. Biochemical aspects have been given priority intentionally, somewhat at the expense of physiological considerations. There are extensive citations ofthe literature-both old and recent-but, it is hoped, not so much docu mentation as to make the book difficult to read. The specific choices of publications to cite and illustrations to present were made for different reasons, often to illustrate historical development, sometimes to illustrate ideas that later proved invalid, occasionally to exemplify conflicting hy potheses, and most often to illustrate the current state of our knowledge about hormonal phenomena.

Manual of Cardiac Surgery: Volume 1 (Comprehensive Manuals of Surgical Specialties)

by B.J. Harlan A. Starr F.M. Harwin

difficult, to represent it as the surgeon sees it, and to understand the anat omy, which is not always visible. In part, this was accomplished by paint ing on both surfaces of transparent paper to create the illusion of looking through superficial layers to the deeper structures. A combination of color media, including colored pencil, graphite, carbon, pastels, and transparent and opaque watercolors, enabled me to convey the field with minimal loss of reality or dimension. Of equal importance was the availability, for every illustration, of direct surgical observation, surgical photographs, fresh specimens, and the surgical instruments. The sequence of creation was first the discus sion of desired illustrations, then a rough sketch, consultation with the surgeons, finished pencil drawing, another consultation, and finally the color rendering. These color renderings were then checked against actual surgery for accuracy in representation of tissues, instrumentation, tissue responses to manipulation, and consistency of representation. From these processes evolved a technique that facilitated the flow of information, in logical sequence, from one step to the next and from one procedure to another, always focusing the attention of the audience toward what is pertinent and away from the extraneous.

Manual of Gynecologic Surgery (Comprehensive Manuals of Surgical Specialties)

by B.J. Masterson

The Mallila/ qf Gyn('c%Ric SurRery is a comprehensive guide for opera tive decision-making and technique in female pelvic surgery. For a wide array of problems requiring surgical intervention, this volume examines the anatomy, preoperative evaluation, surgical strategy, details of tech nique, postoperative management, and anticipated results. The manage ment of operative complications and injuries to bowel, urinary system, and pelvic vessels is discussed. This volume is divided into three sections: ambulatory, vaginal, and abdominal surgery. The ambulatory section will be particularly useful to the family physician. The abdominal section explains complication man agement for the gynecologist whose surgical background may not include gastrointestinal or urinary tract surgery.. The section on ovarian surgery contains additional data for the general surgeon who may encounter unexpected ovarian lesions. Although the book should be most useful to gynecologic residents-in-training and practicing gynecologists, it will also be of use to general surgeons who perform gynecologic operations and to all physicians who perform ambulatory gynecologic procedures. The operative techniques depicted are currently used procedures based on the newer concepts of wound healing and suturing, utilizing mod ern surgical instrumentation. When several techniques are available, the author's personal preference is described. This book, which was produced by the project manager system, rep resents the efforts of 21 persons in three cities. Christine G. Williamson managed the project with drive, understanding, and skill. She was responsi ble also for coordinating information retrieval, organizing the chapters, and editing the text.

Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (Springer Study Edition)

by J. Pedlosky

The content of this book is based, largely, on the core curriculum in geophys ical fluid dynamics which I and my colleagues in the Department of Geophysical Sciences at The University of Chicago have taught for the past decade. Our purpose in developing a core curriculum was to provide to advanced undergraduates and entering graduate students a coherent and systematic introduction to the theory of geophysical fluid dynamics. The curriculum and the outline of this book were devised to form a sequence of courses of roughly one and a half academic years (five academic quarters) in length. The goal of the sequence is to help the student rapidly advance to the point where independent study and research are practical expectations. It quickly became apparent that several topics (e. g. , some aspects of potential theory) usually thought of as forming the foundations of a fluid-dynamics curriculum were merely classical rather than essential and could be, however sadly, dispensed with for our purposes. At the same time, the diversity of interests of our students is so great that no curriculum can truly be exhaust ive in such a curriculum period. It seems to me that the best that can be achieved as a compromise is a systematic introduction to some important segment of the total scope of geophysical fluid dynamics which is illustrative of its most fruitful methods.

The Little Book of Bhavana: Thai Secrets of Everyday Resilience

by Leah Weiss

When a dozen young boys found themselves trapped in Tham Luang cave in June 2018 in Northern Thailand with their 25-year-old coach, their chances of survival seemed very slim. They had only a handful of snacks they'd bought for one of the boys' birthday that day, and no drinking water. Not only that, while they sat there, waiting, the level of the water in the cave was rising all the time. Also, unbeknownst to them, the oxygen level was dropping.Trapped in darkness and unaware of the desperate search efforts going on in the outside world, the Wild Boys coach, Ekkapol Chanthawong, felt it was his responsibility to do everything he could to keep them alive. One of the survival tactics he implemented was getting them all to meditate. Ekkapol had trained for ten years to be a Buddhist monk in a temple in Northern Thailand. He could meditate for an hour at a time, and knew of the countless benefits that came with such a practice. This book explains how meditation within the framework of Bhavana works, why it's something we should all be doing, and how to do it.Bhavana - which refers to mental and spiritual development - is the cultivation of wisdom and tranquility through meditation. It is the means to developing resilience and strength that will serve when it is most needed. This book makes Bhavana accessible and practical by distilling the insights of thousands of years of tradition. It integrates the teachings and practices with the most recent neuroscience of how our brains and behavior can change to give us the tools to withstand suffering and fear.

The Life She Left Behind: An absolutely gripping and heartbreaking page turner

by Nicole Trope

When I wake up in the middle of the night, it’s not a sound that disturbs me. It’s a feeling. Silently, I creep to my daughter’s room, breathing a sigh of relief when I see her sleeping, her night-light twirling, butterfly shapes moving their pink wings. Quickly, I lock the door. I won’t let anything happen to my little girl. You tell him everything. The husband you adore, the father of your child, your best friend. He knows, just by looking at your sage-green eyes, when something is wrong. The two of you can communicate with a glance, or a touch of the hand. Except what if you can’t? What if your happy marriage has plastered over one huge lie? A lie you have even started to believe yourself, in order to survive? What if you have a secret, something you have hidden from your beloved husband and your strawberry-scented baby girl, to keep them safe? What if the guilt has kept you up, night after night, for as long as you can remember? What happens when suddenly, after twenty-eight years, that secret refuses to stay buried? What will you do now everyone you love, everything you cherish, is in harm’s way? An emotional, thought-provoking and beautifully written novel which examines the pieces of ourselves we are afraid of, and the impossible decisions we make when we are desperate. Fans of Jodi Picoult, Kerry Fisher and Liane Moriarty will be moved by this heartbreaking tale. Readers absolutely love Nicole Trope: ‘Loved loved loved this book!… What an incredible story… Will have you holding your breath until the shocking ending. Linear Multivariable Control: A Geometric Approach (Stochastic Modelling and Applied Probability #10)

by W. M. Wonham

In writing this monograph my aim has been to present a "geometric" approach to the structural synthesis of multivariable control systems that are linear, time-invariant and of finite dynamic order. The book is addressed to graduate students specializing in control, to engineering scientists engaged in control systems research and development, and to mathemati cians with some previous acquaintance with control problems. The present edition of this book is a revision of the preliminary version, published in 1974 as a Springer-Verlag "Lecture Notes" volume; and some of the remarks to follow are repeated from the original preface. The label "geometric" in the title is applied for several reasons. First and obviously, the setting is linear state space and the mathematics chiefly linear algebra in abstract (geometric) style. The basic ideas are the familiar system concepts of controllability and observability, thought of as geometric properties of distinguished state subspaces. Indeed, the geometry was first brought in out of revulsion against the orgy of matrix manipulation which linear control theory mainly consisted of, not so long ago. But secondly and of greater interest, the geometric setting rather quickly suggested new methods of attacking synthesis which have proved to be intuitive and econo mical; they are also easily reduced to matrix arithmetic as soon as you want to compute.

Probability Theory: Independence Interchangeability Martingales

by Y. S. Chow H. Teicher

Probability theory is a branch of mathematics dealing with chance phenomena and has clearly discernible links with the real world. The origins of the sub ject, generally attributed to investigations by the renowned french mathe matician Fermat of problems posed by a gambling contemporary to Pascal, have been pushed back a century earlier to the italian mathematicians Cardano and Tartaglia about 1570 (Ore, 1953). Results as significant as the Bernoulli weak law of large numbers appeared as early as 1713, although its counterpart, the Borel strong law oflarge numbers, did not emerge until 1909. Central limit theorems and conditional probabilities were already being investigated in the eighteenth century, but the first serious attempts to grapple with the logical foundations of probability seem to be Keynes (1921), von Mises (1928; 1931), and Kolmogorov (1933). An axiomatic mold and measure-theoretic framework for probability theory was furnished by Kolmogorov. In this so-called objective or measure theoretic approach, definitions and axioms are so chosen that the empirical realization of an event is the outcome of a not completely determined physical experiment -an experiment which is at least conceptually capable of indefi nite repetition (this notion is due to von Mises). The concrete or intuitive counterpart of the probability of an event is a long run or limiting frequency of the corresponding outcome.

Partial Differential Equations (Applied Mathematical Sciences #1)

by F. John

The book has been completely rewritten for this new edition. While most of the material found in the earlier editions has been retained, though in changed form, there are considerable additions, in which extensive use is made of Fourier transform techniques, Hilbert space, and finite difference methods. A condensed version of the present work was presented in a series of lectures as part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research -Indian Insti tute of Science Mathematics Programme in Bangalore in 1977. I am indebted to Professor K. G. Ramanathan for the opportunity to participate in this excit ing educational venture, and to Professor K. Balagangadharan for his ever ready help and advice and many stimulating discussions. Very special thanks are due to N. Sivaramakrishnan and R. Mythili, who ably and cheerfully prepared notes of my lectures which I was able to use as the nucleus of the present edition. A word about the choice of material. The constraints imposed by a partial differential equation on its solutions (like those imposed by the environment on a living organism) have an infinite variety of con sequences, local and global, identities and inequalities. Theories of such equations usually attempt to analyse the structure of individual solutions and of the whole manifold of solutions by testing the compatibility of the differential equation with various types of additional constraints.

Coastal Sedimentary Environments

by Richard A. Davis

Richard A. Davis The zone where land and sea meet is composed of a variety of complex environ ments. The coastal areas of the world contain a large percentage of its population and are therefore of extreme economic importance. Industrial, residential, and recreational developments, as well as large urban complexes, occupy much of the coastal margin of most highly developed countries. Undoubtedly future expan sion in many undeveloped maritime countries will also be concentrated on coastal areas. Accompanying our occupation of coasts in this age of technology is a dependence on coastal environments for transportation, food, water, defense, and recreation. In order to utilize the coastal zone to its capacity, and yet not plunder its resources, we must have extensive knowledge of the complex environ ments contained along the coasts. The many environments within the coastal zone include bays, estuaries, deltas, marshes, dunes, and beaches. A tremendously broad range of conditions is represented by these environments. Salinity may range from essentially fresh water in estuaries, such as along the east coast of the United States, to extreme hypersaline lagoons, such as Laguna Madre in Texas. Coastal environments may be in excess of a hundred meters deep (fjords) or may extend several meters above sea level in the form of dunes. Some coastal environments are well protected and are not subjected to high physical energy except for occasional storms, whereas beaches and tidal inlets are continuously modified by waves and currents.

Differential Equations and Their Applications: Short Version

by M. Braun

This textbook is a unique blend of the theory of differential equations and their exciting application to ··real world" problems. First, and foremost, it is a rigorous study of ordinary differential equations and can be fully understood by anyone who has completed one year of calculus. However, in addition to the traditional applications, it also contains many exciting '·real life" problems. These applications are completely self contained. First, the problem to be solved is outlined clearly, and one or more differential equations are derived as a model for this problem. These equations are then solved, and the results are compared with real world data. The following applications are covered in this text. I. In Section 1.3 we prove that the beautiful painting ··Disciples at Emmaus" which was bought by the Rembrandt Society of Belgium for $170,000 was a modern forgery. 2. In Section 1.5 we derive differential equations which govern the population growth of various species, and compare the results predicted by our models with the known values of the populations. 3. In Section 1.6 we try to determine whether tightly sealed drums filled with concentrated waste material will crack upon impact with the ocean floor. In this section we also describe several tricks for obtaining informa tion about solutions of a differential equation that cannot be solved explicitly.

Desk Reference for Neuroanatomy: A Guide to Essential Terms

by I. Lockard

The main purpose of this book is to provide ready access to key information on parts of the nervous system. The student of neuroanatomy frequently encounters terms from such closely related anatomical fields as the gross anatomy of the peripheral nervous system, the histology and embryology of the nervous system and the anatomy of the eye and ear. Consequently many of the terms from these areas have been included. Although no complete listing of terms from cognate fields has been attempted, some of the more frequently encountered terms from neurophysiology, neuropathology and clinical neurology are also included. References given for some entries are not intended to be exhaustive but to direct the reader's attention in some instances to places where the term has been introduced and in others to places where a more complete discussion of the subject is available. Another purpose is to equate the terms that are synonyms and to differentiate between those that are not. In addition, an attempt has been made to include older terms and eponyms together with their newer counterparts.

p-adic Numbers, p-adic Analysis, and Zeta-Functions (Graduate Texts in Mathematics #58)

by NEAL Koblitz

These lecture notes are intended as an introduction to p-adic analysis on the elementary level. For this reason they presuppose as little background as possi ble. Besides about three semesters of calculus, I presume some slight exposure to more abstract mathematics, to the extent that the student won't have an adverse reaction to matrices with entries in a field other than the real numbers, field extensions of the rational numbers, or the notion of a continuous map of topolog ical spaces. The purpose of this book is twofold: to develop some basic ideas of p-adic analysis, and to present two striking applications which, it is hoped, can be as effective pedagogically as they were historically in stimulating interest in the field. The first of these applications is presented in Chapter II, since it only requires the most elementary properties of Q ; this is Mazur's construction by p means of p-adic integration of the Kubota-Leopoldtp-adic zeta-function, which "p-adically interpolates" the values of the Riemann zeta-function at the negative odd integers. My treatment is based on Mazur's Bourbaki notes (unpublished).

The Lizard Strategy (MacLehose Press Editions)

by Valerio Varesi

Italy's Maigret returns in another smouldering noir from a master of the police procedural "A master storyteller" Barry Forshaw, IndependentParma is blanketed in snow, but this pristine, white veneer cannot mask the stench of corruption. Its officials are no longer working for its people - only for themselves - crime is out of control and resentment festers in every district. Commissario Soneri remains at heart an idealist, so the state of Parma wounds him more than most. And now he is presented with three mysteries at once, each more impenetrable than the last. In a river creek on the outskirts of the city, tipped off by a local, he finds a mobile phone that rings through the night but holds no data; an elderly patient with senile dementia is reported missing from a hospice; and the mayor of Parma, who was reported as taking a holiday on the ski slopes, has disappeared off the face of the earth - just when he seemed certain to be implicated in a seismic corruption scandal at city hall.

Brewing Microbiology

by F. G. Priest I. Campbell

During the latter part of the last century and the early years of this century, the microbiology of beer and the brewing process played a central role in the development of modern microbiology. An important advance was Hansen's development of pure culture yeasts for brewery fermentations and the recognition of different species of brewing and wild yeasts. The discovery by Winge of the life cycles of yeasts and the possibilities of hybridization were among the first steps in yeast genetics with subsequent far-reaching consequences. Over the same period the contaminant bacteria of the fermentation industries were also studied, largely influenced by Shimwell's pioneering research and resulting in the improvement of beer quality. Towards the end of the century, the influence of brewing microbiology within the discipline as a whole is far less important, but it retains an essential role in quality assurance in the brewing industry. Brewing microbiology has gained from advances in other aspects of microbiology and has adopted many of the techniques of biotechnology. Of particular relevance are the developments in yeast genetics and strain improvement by recombinant DNA techniques which are rapidly altering the way brewers view the most important microbiological components of the process: yeast and fermentation.

Generalized Functions Theory and Technique: Theory and Technique

by Ram P. Kanwal

This second edition of Generalized Functions has been strengthened in many ways. The already extensive set of examples has been expanded. Since the publication of the first edition, there has been tremendous growth in the subject and I have attempted to incorporate some of these new concepts. Accordingly, almost all the chapters have been revised. The bibliography has been enlarged considerably. Some of the material has been reorganized. For example, Chapters 12 and 13 of the first edition have been consolidated into Chapter 12 of this edition by a judicious process of elimination and addition of the subject matter. The new Chapter 13 explains the interplay between the theories of moments, asymptotics, and singular perturbations. Similarly, some sections of Chapter 15 have been revised and included in earlier chapters to improve the logical flow of ideas. However, two sections are retained. The section dealing with the application of the probability theory has been revised, and I am thankful to Professor Z.L. Crvenkovic for her help. The new material included in this chapter pertains to the modern topics of periodic distributions and microlocal theory. I have demonstrated through various examples that familiarity with the generalized functions is very helpful for students in physical sciences and technology. For instance, the reader will realize from Chapter 6 how the generalized functions have revolutionized the Fourier analysis which is being used extensively in many fields of scientific activity.
