Sheikh Abdullah: The Caged Lion of Kashmir

by Chitralekha Zutshi

A compelling biography of Sheikh Abdullah, the charismatic, combative, and controversial Kashmiri politician Written by the leading historian of modern Kashmir, this is a comprehensive portrayal of one of the most enigmatic politicians in modern South Asia, Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, known as the Lion of Kashmir. Abdullah (1905–1982) devoted much of his life to mobilizing Kashmiris to assert their rights, to trying to achieve a fair resolution for their politically contested state, to shaping its turbulent relationship with India, and to bridging the divide between India and Pakistan. Although he forged ties with the Indian National Congress, Abdullah’s support for Kashmir’s accession to India and his advocacy for a more autonomous position for the state within the Indian Union complicated his relationship with India and led to his fall from grace, arrest, and imprisonment. In 1975 he reached a compromise with India that alienated generations of Kashmiris for whose self-determination he had long fought. The people of Kashmir, India, and Pakistan continue to grapple with and contest his legacy. Zutshi’s rigorously researched and elegantly crafted biography brings this complex figure to life and offers a window onto the political fissures of twentieth-century South Asia more broadly.

Disavowal (Theory Redux)

by Alenka Zupančič

This book argues that the psychoanalytic concept of disavowal best renders the structure underlying our contemporary social response to traumatic and disturbing events, from climate change to unsettling tectonic shifts in our social tissue. Unlike denialism and negation, disavowal functions by fully acknowledging what we disavow. Zupančič contends that disavowal, which sustains some belief by means of ardently proclaiming the knowledge of the opposite, is becoming a predominant feature of our social and political life. She also shows how the libidinal economy of disavowal is a key element of capitalist economy. The concept of fetishistic disavowal already exposes the objectified side of the mechanism of the disavowal, which follows the general formula: I know well, but all the same, the object-fetish allows me to disregard this knowledge. Zupančič adds another twist by showing how, in the prevailing structure of disavowal today, the mere act of declaring that we know becomes itself an object-fetish by which we intercept the reality of that very knowledge. This perverse deployment of knowledge deprives it of any reality. This structure of disavowal can be found not only in the more extreme and dramatic cases of conspiracy theories and re-emerging magical thinking, but even more so in the supposedly sober continuation of business as usual, combined with the call to adapt to the new reality. To disrupt this social embedding of disavowal, it is not enough to change the way we think: things need to change, and hence the way they think for us.

(An)Archive: Childhood, Memory, and the Cold War

by Zsuzsa Millei;Nelli Piattoeva;Iveta Silova;Mnemo ZIN

What was it like growing up during the Cold War? What can childhood memories tell us about state socialism and its aftermath? How can these intimate memories complicate history and redefine possible futures? These questions are at the heart of the (An)Archive: Childhood, Memory, and the Cold War. This edited collection stems from a collaboration between academics and artists who came together to collectively remember their own experiences of growing up on both sides of the ‘Iron Curtain’. Looking beyond official historical archives, the book gathers memories that have been erased or forgotten, delegitimized or essentialized, or, at best, reinterpreted nostalgically within the dominant frameworks of the East-West divide. And it reassembles and (re)stores these childhood memories in a form of an ‘anarchive’: a site for merging, mixing, connecting, but also juxtaposing personal experiences, public memory, political rhetoric, places, times, and artifacts. These acts and arts of collective remembering tell about possible futures―and the past’s futures―what life during the Cold War might have been but also what it has become. (An)Archive will be of particular interest to scholars in a variety of fields, but particularly to artists, educators, historians, social scientists, and others working with memory methodologies that range from collective biography to oral history, (auto)biography, autoethnography, and archives.

Digitalization as a Strategic Tool for Entrepreneurship Survival and Crisis Management: Lessons from Ukrainian MSEs (Entrepreneurial Behaviour)

by Lamberto Zollo Daria Holovko

Digitalization has recently emerged as a critical strategy for businesses to survive during disruptive times and crises. By utilizing digital tools, enterprises can enhance their communication capabilities, achieve cost savings, access new markets, implement data-driven and efficient decision-making processes, and maintain contact and alignment with key stakeholders regardless of market conditions. However, scant attention has been paid to how micro and small enterprises (MSEs) exploit digitalization to cope with recent crises. Digitalization as a Strategic Tool for Entrepreneurship Survival and Crisis Management: Lessons from Ukrainian MSEs investigates the impact of digital transformation on the survival of MSEs during times of crisis, guided by Ukraine as an emblematic empirical case study. The choice of Ukrainian MSEs as the research context is based on the prospect of obtaining valuable insights by examining micropreneurs during an ongoing crisis stemming from the 2022 military invasion by Russia and the residual effects of the pandemic. The ongoing socio-economic situation in Ukraine is being scrutinized in real-time, providing a distinctive opportunity to analyze its impact on entrepreneurs’ behavior during their efforts to stabilize businesses and the predominant challenges that most MSEs confront. The book offers significant insights into the potential benefits of digitalizing business models, management capabilities of micropreneurs, and employing multi-stakeholder and omnichannel communication strategies, which micropreneurs can utilize. The Entrepreneurial Behaviour series is focused on expanding the scope of Entrepreneurial Behaviour theory and analysis and enriching practice by encouraging multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary approaches.

His Excellency Eug?ne Rougon (Oxford World's Classics)

by Émile Zola

'He loved power for power's sake . . . He was without question the greatest of the Rougons.' His Excellency Eugène Rougon (1876) is the sixth novel in Zola's twenty-volume Rougon-Macquart cycle. A political novel set in the corridors of power and in the upper échelons of French Second Empire society, including the Imperial court, it focuses on the fluctuating fortunes of the authoritarian Eugène Rougon, the 'vice-Emperor'. But it is more than just a chronicle. It plunges the reader into the essential dynamics of the political: the rivalries, the scheming, the jockeying for position, the ups and downs, the play of interests, the lobbying and gossip, the patronage and string-pulling, the bribery and blackmail, and, especially, the manipulation of language for political purposes. The novel's themes-especially its treatment of political discourse-have remarkable contemporary resonance. His Excellency Eugène Rougon is about politics everywhere.

Robust Design and Assessment of Product and Production by Means of Probabilistic Multi-objective Optimization

by Maosheng Zheng Jie Yu

This book develops robust design and assessment of product and production from viewpoint of system theory, which is quantized with the introduction of brand new concept of preferable probability and its assessment. It aims to provide a new idea and novel way to robust design and assessment of product and production and relevant problems. Robust design and assessment of product and production is attractive to both customer and producer since the stability and insensitivity of a product’s quality to uncontrollable factors reflect its value. Taguchi method has been used to conduct robust design and assessment of product and production for half a century, but its rationality is criticized by statisticians due to its casting of both mean value of a response and its dispersion into one index, which doesn’t characterize the issue of simultaneous optimization of above two independent sub-responses sufficiently for robust design, so an appropriate approach is needed. The preference or role of a response in the evaluation is indicated by using preferable probability as the unique index. Thus, the rational approach for robust design and assessment of product and production is formulated by means of probabilistic multi-objective optimization, which reveals the simultaneous optimization of both mean value of a response and its dispersion in manner of joint probability. Besides, defuzzification and fuzzification measurements are involved as preliminary approaches for robust assessment, the latter provides miraculous treatment for the 'target the best' case flexibly.

Re-Understanding Entrepreneurship: What It Is and Why It Matters

by null Weiying Zhang

How do entrepreneurs make decisions in the real world? Why are entrepreneurs absent from mainstream economics? What functions do entrepreneurs play in the market? What type of institutional environment is needed for entrepreneurship to play a role? Neoclassical economics is a market theory without entrepreneurship. This misconception distorts our understanding of how the real market works, leading to a theory of market failure that forms the common foundation of various government interventions. The market is not only an allocative process but, more importantly, a discovery and creative process. To understand the real market, Weiying Zhang argues that economics must shift from a price-centric to an entrepreneur-centric paradigm. Blending theory and narrative, Zhang intersects history with the present supporting his theory with relevant case studies. He argues that once entrepreneurship in the market is correctly understood, the foundation for government intervention is undermined and the economy can sustainably flourish.

Lawyer Evaluation in Chinese Courtroom: A Social-Semiotic Perspective

by Liping Zhang

This book focuses on the speech style of lawyer talk in contemporary Chinese courtrooms. The topic is intriguing to readers who may wonder how lawyers compete with their opposing counterparts in an adversarial trial system in China. The legal tradition in Confucianism, which advocates harmony in interpersonal relationships, has historically guided the practice of law in China. The book analyses how lawyers manage to compete in this system. Applying the social semiotic view of language in the Hallidayian sense, specifically systemic functional linguistics and its appraisal theory, this study interprets the subjectivity of legal language by lawyers. The speech style in legal argument presentation is described as 'rational'. The exploration of the rational speech style of lawyers is a theoretical and discursive topic. It draws upon Habermasian philosophy of intersubjectivity in legal argumentation and considers the cultural and legal contexts of China as contextual constraints. The keyconstruct of lawyer evaluation is fully captured in this discussion. As a linguistic phenomenon and unit of analysis, discourse can be examined both within local clauses and in larger stretches of talk beyond clauses. Additionally, it serves as an effective means for constructing a rational speech style for lawyers. Most importantly, discourse is a discursive act that negotiates legal arguments in the dynamic speech exchanges of a court trial, which is embedded in a wider social and cultural context. The book showcases instances of lawyer talk in well-documented trials in China and offers a good opportunity for readers to gain a general understanding of courtroom discourse in the Chinese context. It introduces readers with special interests in legal language and the law to the solidarity dimension of legal language and arguments, an alternative to the confrontational or hostile lawyer talk in trials in countries with a common-law system. The analysis presented is refined and the language used is clear, concise, and objective.
