States of Health: The Ethics and Consequences of Policy Variation in a Federal System

Federalism in the United States has been defended as a political structure that enables people to coexist in a single polity despite deep disagreements about some of the most fundamental aspects of human life. This federalism of the compound republic of the United States can create space for difference and latitude for innovation, and its flexibility in levels of policy enactment can allow for fruitful state-level experimentation, especially in the areas of health and health care, which has long been celebrated. However, when federalism results in significant differences in health care availability within a single country-with abortion being the tip of the iceberg of these differences, albeit a very pointed one-it can generate enormous ethical challenges for health care providers and their patients. These challenges often engender questions of what should be considered an enduring right: Which freedoms should transcend borders? States of Health identifies the practical relevance of federalism to people facing ethical decisions about health and health care, and it considers the theoretical justifications for permissible differences among states. It asks whether authority over important aspects of health is misaligned in the United States today, with some matters problematically left to the states while others are taken over by the federal government. Health care is a basic good, central to the ability of people to flourish. If state policies result in a landscape where residents of some states can flourish in ways that residents of other states cannot, the mutuality of a federal union might be threatened. States of Health reminds us that there are some divisions that a nation cannot endure.

Achsendiagramme in der ökonomischen Bildung: Lernschwierigkeiten von Schüler*innen mit dem Preis-Mengen-Diagramm
by Jana FrankeÖkonomische Modelle werden durch bewusste Reduktion der Komplexität des Betrachteten mit dem Ziel des Erkenntnisgewinns entwickelt. Mithilfe von mathematischen Modellierungen können ökonomische Modelle exakter gefasst werden. Dieses Resultat ist ein wichtiges Werkzeug bei der Ermittlung und Darstellung von Systemzusammenhängen. Durch die Visualisierung der mathematischen Modellierungen mit dem Achsendiagramm werden abstrakte Zusammenhänge erkennbar und diskutierbar. Deshalb finden ökonomische Achsendiagramme in der Schule unter anderem als Hilfsmittel zur systematischen Betrachtung einzelner Einflussfaktoren eines komplexen Interaktionssystems, wie beispielsweise der Preisbildung auf Märkten, Einsatz. Die Visualisierung des ökonomischen Modells der Preisbildung auf Märkten mithilfe des Preis-Mengen-Diagramms kann dabei die ökonomischen Verständnisprozesse fördern, sie aber auch behindern. Inwieweit das Preis-Mengen-Diagramm somit Hilfsmittel und Hürde im Wirtschaftsunterricht darstellt, wird in diesem Buch untersucht. Dafür werden Lernschwierigkeiten von Schüler*innen beim Umgang mit und dem Wissen über die mathematische Modellierung des ökonomischen Modells der Preisbildung im vollkommenen Markt und dessen Visualisierung durch das Preis-Mengen-Diagramm identifiziert. Darauf aufbauend werden Implikationen für den Wirtschaftsunterricht abgeleitet.

Interestingly there have been numerous attempts that have sought to define, explain and interpret the consequences of these developments that occur in the international system (Chan, 2008:1). Efforts have been made to define ‘Great Powers’, ‘Middle Powers’, ‘Emerging Powers’, ‘Small Powers’, Super Powers’, ‘Hegemons’ etc, of which the idea of ‘Great Power’ and ‘Emerging Power’, receives primary attention in this research. The dramatic rise of China and India in particular, in terms of their economy and military capabilities, has brought about a paradigm shift in terms of thinking of world politics that is coupled with the decline of the US’ hegemonic status. Randall Schweller points out that there have been arguments that support the fact of the increasing potential for security competition and war between the US and China and on the other hand he also directs the reader to the optimist’s argument that the transition of power would be smooth and evolutionary where there will be efforts towards accommodating these changes that are occurring in the international system. He also points out that there will be efforts by great powers to accept these changes through restraint, reciprocity, cooperation and establish a mutually acceptable order that would benefit all (Schweller, 2011: 285). These complexities make it both interesting as well as a serious concern in terms of peace and security in the world.

Freymueller Laura SánchezThis open access volume contains the proceedings of the X Hotine-Marussi Symposium on Mathematical Geodesy which was held from 13 to 17 June 2022 at the Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy. Since 2006 the series of the Hotine-Marussi Symposia has been under the responsibility of the Inter-Commission Committee on Theory (ICCT) within the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). The ICCT organized the last five Hotine-Marussi Symposia held in Wuhan (2006), Rome (2009, 2013 and 2018), and Milan (2022). The overall goal of the ICCT and Hotine-Marussi Symposia has always been to advance geodetic theory which is indeed documented by the 22 research articles published in these proceedings. The jubilee X Hotine-Marussi Symposium was organized in 10 topical sessions covering all parts of geodetic theory including reference frames, gravity field modelling, adjustment theory, height systems, time series analysis, or advanced numerical methods. In total, 60 participants attended the Symposium who delivered 62 oral and 18 poster presentations. During a special session, five invited speakers discussed two basic concepts of physical geodesy – geoid and quasigeoid.
