From Development to Democracy: The Transformations of Modern Asia

In Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan these factors fostered democracy through strength, while democratic experiments in Indonesia, Thailand, and Myanmar were less successful and more reversible. At the same time, resistance to democratic reforms has proven intractable in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Reconsidering China’s 1989 crackdown, Slater and Wong argue that it was the action of a regime too weak to concede, not too strong to fail, and they explain why China can allow democracy without inviting instability.The result is a comprehensive regional history that offers important new insights about when and how democratic transitions happen—and what the future of Asia might be.

Um sich der Frage nach der Hervorbringung früher Kindheit empirisch zu nähern, wurden ethnografische Feldaufenthalte in frühpädagogischen Institutionen in Österreich durchgeführt, wobei insbesondere die teilnehmenden Beobachtungen einen Zugang zu den Praktiken der Akteur*innen gewährten. Ausgewählte Feldprotokolle wurden mittels Dokumentarischer Methode rekonstruktiv analysiert. Die generierte relationale agency-Typologie bietet ein Deutungsangebot, frühe Kindheit als eine von Kindern und Fachkräften gemeinschaftlich hervorgebrachte Leistung vor dem Hintergrund komplexer Ordnungen zu verstehen. Fueling State Capitalism: How Domestic Politics Shapes Foreign Investments of National Oil Companies (STUDIES COMPAR ENERGY ENVIRON POL SERIES)
by Andrew CheonIn the late 1990s, governments began investing hundreds of billions of dollars in foreign oil and gas assets through their national oil companies (NOCs), raising concerns about a "resource war" and asymmetric interdependence. Most critics perceive the foreign investments of NOCs as politically driven and inefficient. In Fueling State Capitalism, however, Andrew Cheon sees these investments as commercial ventures by ambitious state-owned enterprises seeking to become global players amid rising oil prices. Some have invested aggressively abroad, often in politically risky destinations, whereas others have been more moderate in their ambitions. The NOCs' capacity to pursue foreign investments varies, as Cheon argues, according to regime types and bureaucratic structures of their governments. Using principal agent theory, Cheon shows that competition among NOCs' principals at two different levels of government--national and bureaucratic--conditions the foreign investments of NOCs. While competition between the chief executive and opposition parties can limit democratic governments' capacity to tolerate failed investments abroad, non-democratic governments are less constrained. An overlap of authority among bureaucratic institutions can also encourage counterproductive behavior among NOCs, whereas a clear line of authority among them can prevent it. Looking at investments from 79 countries from 2000 to 2013, as well as case studies of China, India, Brazil, Norway, and Russia, Fueling State Capitalism unpacks the role of institutions, both national and bureaucratic, in shaping the global expansion of national energy firms. Moreover, Cheon probes the energy security motivations of NOC investments and the origins of bureaucratic structures. Based on the experience of NOC global expansion, Cheon concludes that bureaucratic institutions will be critical in achieving decarbonization that not only allows governments to meet their political objectives, but also helps NOCs ensure their long-term commercial viability through a managed transition to renewable energy.

Fundamentals of Information Systems Interoperability: Data, Services, and Processes

It details interoperability at the data, service, and process level, and combines theoretical foundations with hands-on presentation of technologies to enable the development of sound and practical integration. Chapter 1 details general interoperability challenges and describes the structure of the book. To start with, Chapter 2 presents technologies for the exchange of data between two selected and highly relevant data formats, i.e., relational databases and XML. Next, Chapter 3 explains concepts for schema matching and mapping and data integration as well as the technological basis for implementing them based on query and transformation languages like XPath and XSLT. Chapter 4 then turns to service interoperability and explains two related technologies – REST and GraphQL – in detail. In Chapter 5, fundamentals for designing process orchestrations at the conceptual level are presented, focusing on how to model process orchestrations and how to verify their correctness and soundness, and showing BPMN as the de facto modeling standard. Chapter 6 then details the concepts and languages for the implementation of process orchestrations, including the presentation of execution languages for process orchestrations that are equipped with a formal semantics, e.g., Workflow Nets, the Refined Process Structure Tree, and CPEE Trees. Subsequently, Chapter 7 focuses on the growing number of distributed, loosely coupled, and often non-interoperable applications through the concepts of enterprise application integration and explains these by an implementation in CPN Tools and by two case studies. Eventually, Chapter 8 is lifting the orchestration and integration concepts and technologies to the choreography level by dealing with the interoperability between different process orchestrations. Chapter 9 concludes the book by featuring success factors for interoperability projects. It also provides a range of open research directions for interoperability such as compliance, sensor fusion, and blockchain technologies. The book is mainly intended as a textbook to be used for developing and teaching courses on interoperability and integration. To this end, it is accompanied by a Web site with additional teaching materials. It also spans a bridge from researchers to graduate students and practitioners by providing a deep understanding on practical interoperability challenges and solutions. Key theses in ethics, epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of action, and the philosophy of the emotions, among others, have come to be framed in terms of reasons. Through his study of a youth center in Minneapolis, Mahadeo provides examples of Black youth constructing alternative temporalities that center their lived experiences and ensure their worldviews, tastes, and culture are most relevant and up to date.
