Little Book of the Grand National (Little Book Ser.)

by Julian Seaman

The Grand National is the most famous horse race in the world. Officially first run in 1839, it is now watched in 140 countries on television with viewing figures of more than 500 million. Run in early April at Aintree, Liverpool, this spectacular steeplechase over 30 fearsome fences and four and a half miles has had a history filled with drama. In the first running a Captain Becher fell into the ditch which now bears his name. In 1956 the Queen Mothe's Devon Loch looked set to win, ridden by future thriller writer Dick Francis in the saddle, only to belly flop, legs akimbo, yards from the line. In 1967 there was a pile- up at the fence before the Canal Turn allowing 100/1 outsider Foinavon to come through to win. In the 1970s, when the future of the race looked seriously in doubt, the three amazing wins by Red Rum re-engaged the public, and who can forget the emotional victory of cancer survivor Bob Champion and Aldaniti in 1981? The National has thrown up some great characters such as the Spanish nobleman the Duke of Albuquerque and English racing journalist Lord Oaksey. In the history of the race, the largest number of runners was an enormous field of 66 and the fewest to finish was just two. In 1993 a starting fiasco resulted in the race being declared null and void and, only four years later, it was postponed by a bomb scare and was run on the following Monday. Little Book of the Grand National tells all these tales, illustrated with great contemporary pictures and photographs.

The club has arguably the most passionate fans in the world and their anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” has helped carry the team through the good times and the bad particularly following the 1989 Hillsborough disaster when 96 supporters were crushed to death. Founded in 1892, the club has played at Anfield in all that time, and enjoyed its most successful period in the 1970s and 1980s when Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley led the club to eleven league titles and seven European trophies. This fully-illustrated book looks back at all the greatest moments that have shaped the history of the Merseyside club and pays tribute to the great players from the past such as Kevin Keegan, Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard to the modern superstars including Virgil Van Dijk, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah who are on their way to becoming legends under the charismatic managership of Jurgen Klopp.

Mary Magdalene's Final Legacy ebook

by Julie De Vere Hunt

Where did Yeshua and Mary Magdalene’s line carry on?Sequel to Mary Magdalene’s Legacy, Mary Magdalene’s Final Legacy follows the next three generations of Yeshua and Mary Magdalene through the diaries of Jude, their grandson, and John Julius, their great grandson. The story takes place in Egypt, Italy, Greece, Asia Minor (Turkey) and Gaul in the 1st and 2nd centuries. Jude suffers a spiritual crisis, and is beset with personal tragedy, but continues with his divine gift, writing. Jude’s son, John Julius, succeeds Jude and then travels to Asia Minor, where he changes his name and founds a new movement which would survive for centuries.Archaeological discoveries made in the last twenty years together with the unearthing of more ancient Greek papyrus fragments form the basis for this story. These early Christian writings were written under pseudonyms and until now were unconnected with Mary Magdalene’s descendants.Mary Magdalene leaves one final legacy which will send shock waves through the church today. It’s a story, but it is based on the Universal Truth.

Mental Toughness for Golf

by Brian Hemmings

We've probably all heard someone say that golf is 90% mental and only 10% physical. This book's series of real life experiences clearly highlights why there's much truth in that statement. The winners' stories presented here demonstrate that whatever their circumstances, mentally strong players are able to produce positive outcomes, often against all odds. The authors have successfully sought out first-hand evidence from professional and elite amateur players, with the resulting dialogues encapsulating all that is good in preparation. They then elaborate and reflect on those attitudes that form the bedrock of mental toughness. The good news is there's absolutely no reason why any golfer - whatever their standard - cannot benefit from the insights unearthed in this book. The stories provide potent evidence of the power of the mind. The authors are all passionate about improving the performance of every golfer. Through their interviews they have uncovered the critical psychological factors that make winners - factors accessible to all players. These fascinating stories, relayed through the players' own words, represent a refreshing way to guide, inform and expand our mental approaches to performance. Players whose stories are featured include Nick Faldo, Justin Rose, Colin Montgomerie, Jamie Spence and many more.

Motown Artist by Artist: A Compilation of the 100 Greatest Motown Artists

by Pat Morgan

In 1959 Berry Gordy Jr., a high school dropout, former boxer and record store owner, founded the Motown record label in Detroit. The company name, which played on the city's proud tradition of car manufacture, was to become synonymous with great music as Gordy took the sound of black America to the world. Starting with Barrett Strong's Money (That's What I Want), Motown racked up hit after hit, becoming familiar to UK audiences under the name of Tamla Motown and launching the careers of megastars like Diana Ross and The Supremes, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations and the Jackson 5. The 'Motown Sound' was instantly recognisable and unavoidably infectious. As the decades wore on and musician styles changed, Motown moved with the times, launching a myriad of specialist labels and finding new artists to push the boundaries. After a 2005 merger with Universal, the hits kept coming. Motown Artist by Artist relates the history of one of popular music's longest lasting success stories through the stories of the singers and musicians who made the hits. From Ashford & Simpson to Stevie Wonder, every Motown success story is here.

Ryder Cup Top 50 Players: A Compilation of the Best Players from the Europe and USA teams (Top 50 Players #1)

by Dale Concannon

The brainchild of Samuel Ryder, a wealthy seed merchant from St Albans, the Ryder Cup was a bi-annual British-American professional golf tournament that was first played for the trophy bearing his name in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1927. America won the match and gradually became the dominant force in the competition. During the 1960s the results were so one-sided that the Ryder Cup was expanded so that players from Ireland could compete for the British team. Since 1983 the contest has become one of the most competitive tournaments in the world, with many players achieving sporting immortality for their exploits on green and fairway on both sides of the Atlantic. In this lavishly illustrated book, Ryder Cup expert Dale Concannon, selects his 50 greatest players to have graced both teams from Arnold Palmer to Tiger Woods., from Seve to Rory.

The Secret Lives of Secret Agents

by Liam McCann

Many of us have grown up with James Bond, Jason Bourne and Jack Ryan as our heroes, but these spies live and work in a fictional world that bears little resemblance to reality. Secret agents have existed for as long as humans have been in conflict, and this book tells the stories of the people and agencies responsible for some of the most daring and disastrous exploits in the history of intelligence gathering, warfare and espionage. We’ll examine the lives of Nathan Hale, the man executed by the British during the American Revolutionary War; Sidney Reilly, Ace of Spies; and Aldrich Ames, the man who betrayed countless CIA officers and operations to the Soviet Union. We’ll also look at the lesser-known events surrounding the disappearance of Wilhelm Mörz, the only German spy thought to have escaped from Britain during the Second World War, and Mata Hari, the femme fatale who extracted secrets from both sides during World War One.The agencies behind these men and women will also be examined in detail, and no book on secret agents would be complete without paying tribute to the most famous spy on the silver screen: James Bond.

Toon Up

by J J Gammond

TOON UP Storming straight back into the Premier League at the first time of asking, Newcastle United's title chase with Brighton went right down to the wire before the Championship trophy headed to Tyneside. United were a full nine points ahead of third placed Reading in the final analysis, as under Rafa Benitez The Magpies were never destined to settle anywhere but on the highest perch. The Toon's promotion campaign started before the season did. Unbeaten in the last six games of the previous year, a final day 5-1 annihilation of Spurs showed that while the Magpies were down they certainly weren't out. The Rafa-lution saw 11 players leave and another 17 depart on loan, while in total a dozen came in. A Champions League winner, Benitez loaded up with players equipped to get Newcastle straight out of the Championship and despite back to back shock defeats to begin with United were soon in full stride. Through the 6-0 away win at QPR, the sensational seven goal thriller with Norwich, the nine-man pantomime at Nottingham Forest and a record 14 away wins every step of the Rafa-lution is captured in Toon Up. Re-live a season to remember as every match in league and cup is reviewed and reflected on in the story of Newcastle's instant return to the top-flight. Foreword by Newcastle's 1965 promotion wining captain Stan Anderson.
