"El Vellocino de oro" es una obra basada en la mitología, el vellón de un maravilloso cordero que está dotado del don de la palabra, que llevó a Asia sobre su grupa a Frixo y Hele, hijos de Nafele. Jasón y los argonautas partieron en su búsqueda. También se le conoce como Toisón de oro. Este mito ha dado origen a la obra de Lope, a cuyo argumento da Lope sus propios matices.
