De Profundis

by Rita Correia Isabel Robalinho Miguel Vale de Almeida Oscar Wilde

Albuquerque: Caesar of the East. Selected Texts by Afonso de Albuquerque and His Son (Aris & Phillips Hispanic Classics)

by Tom Earle John Villiers

Of all the remarkable people who first opened up the rest of the world to the Europeans Columbus, Magellan, Vasco da Gama, Pizarro and Cortes Afonso de Albuquerque, governor of Portuguese India from 1509 to 1515, was one of the most astonishing. He was a commander of bold strategic conceptions, a far-sighted administrator and in addition a talented writer, whose dispatches to King Manuel contain a wealth of spontaneous narrative, description and pungent comment. Caesar of the East is a specially edited anthology, based on the original Portuguese texts, of selections from these dispatches, or Cartas , and from the Comentarios (Commentaries) written by Albuquerque's son, also called Afonso, about his father's career, with new English translations of both. In the introduction Dr Villiers evaluates the part that Albuquerque played in the foundation of the Portuguese empire in Asia, and Dr Earle provides a literary analysis of the contrasting styles of the Cartas and the Comentarios , where the father's informality and spontaneity contrast fascinatingly with his son's carefully contrived and highly literary narrative. Historical and geographical notes help the reader to understand the text.

Fonologia do Português e Interfaces: Fenômenos da Aquisição e da Variação (Routledge Studies in Hispanic and Lusophone Linguistics)

by Dermeval Da Hora Carmen Matzenauer

Fonologia do Português e Interfaces: Fenômenos da Aquisição e da Variação brings together a collection of studies on phonological acquisition and phonological variation in European and Brazilian Portuguese, addressing topics and proposing analyzes that are little studied in linguistic research in the target language. The eleven chapters foster theoretical debates on the processes underlying both phonological acquisition and variation and show how these are interrelated. They focus on the acquisition of phonology by children as well as adult variation in the use of phonological units in everyday speech, highlighting linguistic processes that occur in both contexts. The volume combines theory and practices with a focus on language teaching and acquisition. The book will be of interest to Lusophony linguists, particularly those interested in phonological acquisition and variation, and should prove useful to linguistic researchers, practitioners, and students of Portuguese in Europe, Latin America, and the US.Fonologia do Português e Interfaces: Fenômenos da Aquisição e da Variação reúne uma coletânea de estudos sobre aquisição fonológica e variação fonológica no Português Europeu e Brasileiro, com a abordagem de tópicos e a proposição de análises pouco estudados na pesquisa linguística na língua-alvo.

With and Without Galton: Vasilii Florinskii And The Fate Of Eugenics In Russia

by Nikolai Krementsov

In 1865, British polymath Francis Galton published his initial thoughts about the scientific field that would become ‘eugenics.’ The same year, Russian physician Vasilii Florinskii addressed similar issues in a sizeable treatise, entitled Human Perfection and Degeneration. Initially unheralded, Florinskii’s book would go on to have a remarkable afterlife in twentieth- and twenty-first-century Russia. In this lucid and insightful work, Nikolai Krementsov argues that the concept of eugenics brings together ideas, values, practices, and fears energised by a focus on the future. It has proven so seductive to different groups over time because it provides a way to grapple with fundamental existential questions of human nature and destiny. With and Without Galton develops this argument by tracing the life-story of Florinskii’s monograph from its uncelebrated arrival amid the Russian empire’s Great Reforms, to its reissue after the Bolshevik Revolution, its decline under Stalinism, and its subsequent resurgence: first, as a founding document of medical genetics, and most recently, as a manifesto for nationalists and racial purists. Krementsov’s meticulously researched ‘biography of a book’ sheds light not only on the peculiar fate of eugenics in Russia, but also on its convoluted transnational history, elucidating the field’s protean nature and its continuing and contested appeal to diverse audiences, multiple local trajectories, and global trends. It is required reading for historians of eugenics, science, medicine, education, literature, and Russia, and it will also appeal to the general reader looking for a deeper understanding of this challenging subject. Victoria College, University of Toronto, has generously contributed to the publication of this volume.

Lopes: The English in Portugal 1383-1387 (Aris & Phillips Hispanic Classics)

by Derek W. Lomax R. J. Oakley

It is astonishing that this is the first English translation of these Chronicles , as they are undoubtably amongst the finest produced in the Middle Ages and treat an important episode in the Hundred Years War. Lopes' mastery of dramatic narrative and picturesque description, so ably captured in this translation, found a fit subject in the foreign interventions and the revolutionary changes that took place in the second half of the 14th century in Portugal. What makes Lopes virtually unique as an historian of that date is his insistence on the use of documentary sources as he explains in his prologue to The Chronicle of Dom Joao , something that he as the keeper of the Royal archives was able to practice so effectively. It seems fitting that Fernao Lopes' great work should appear in a dual language edition as a tribute to the six hundred years alliance, whose beginning he so vividly recalls between the English and Portuguese peoples.

A Manga Perfeita

by Erin Manning

by Adrian Martin

Publicado originalmente como Last Day Every Day: Figural Thinking from Auerbach and Kracauer to Agamben and Brenez, em 2012, por Dead Letter Office, uma série da editora punctum books.

Landscapes of Investigation: Contributions to Critical Mathematics Education

by Miriam Godoy Penteado and Ole Skovsmose

Creating landscapes of investigation is a primary concern of critical mathematics education. It enables us to organise educational processes so that students and teachers are able to get involved in explorations guided by dialogical interactions. It attempts to address explicit or implicit forms of social injustice by means of mathematics, and also to promote a critical conception of mathematics, challenging the assumption that the subject represents objectivity and neutrality. Landscapes of Investigation provides many illustrations of how this can be done in primary, secondary, and university education. It also illustrates how exploring landscapes of investigation can contribute to mathematics teacher education programmes.
