Fractured Tales documents narratives of the voiceless and invisible dalit castes that have been left out in the 60 years of state-led Indian democracy. Exploring the deepening of democracy among the dalits of Uttar Pradesh, it argues that the process of democratization of these communities over-represents some groups such as the Chamars and Pasis while neglecting others like the Musahar, Bansphor, and Sapera communities. Ordinary villagers often find themselves caught between the promises and failures of democracy and development. This ethnographic study of the village of Khanpur (in Uttar Pradesh, north India) is an attempt to grasp everyday life in rural India. Drawing on descriptions of village life, interspersed with theoretical analyses, the author examines how ordinary people construct their own sense of their lives and their futures in everyday activities: working on farms, attending college, searching for non-farm employment, celebrating religious rituals, and dealing with local elections and democracy. The villagers confront growing economic and moral uncertainty; they creatively harmonize public discourse and local practice; and sometimes they resolve incoherence and unease through the use of irony. In so doing, they perform everyday village and caste ethics and re-create transient political, economic, and moral communities at a time of massive social dislocation. Satendra Kumar in this lucid book shows, in no uncertain terms, that villages in Uttar Pradesh and elsewhere have been and continue to be vibrant grounds for the production of culture, sociality, hope, politics, and persons. He also addresses anthropology's forfeiture of the village as a subject of study in an era of globalization.

Shortly after his return to India though, he spoke of the generally beneficial aspects of caste. Gandhi's writings on caste reflect contradictory views and his critics accuse him of neglecting the unequal socio-economic structure that relegated Dalits to the bottom of the caste hierarchy. So, did Gandhi endorse the fourfold division of the Indian society or was he truly against caste? In this book, Nishikant Kolge investigates the entire range of what Gandhi said or wrote about caste divisions over a period of more than three decades: from his return to India in 1915 to his death in 1948. Interestingly, Kolge also maps Gandhi's own statements that undermined his stance against the caste system. These writings uncover the 'strategist Gandhi' who understood that social transformation had to be a slow process for the conservative but powerful section of Hindus who were not yet ready for radical reforms. Seven decades after it attained freedom from colonial powers, caste continues to influence the socio-political dynamics of India, and Gandhi against caste—the battle is not over yet.

by Dharmaस्वर्ग गर्भ, बचपन और भूतकाल का रूपक है। यह बचपन के उन खूबसूरत दिनों में वापस लौटने की उत्कंठा है जो पूर्णरूपेण चिंताओं से रहित और जिम्मेदारियों से विमुक्त व्यतीत हुए थे। हमारे परिजन हमारी देखभाल करते थे, हमें सुरक्षा प्रदान करते थे और उनसे हमें भरपूर प्रेम और स्नेह मिलता था। वे हमें भोजन कराते थे, कपड़े पहनाते थे और उनके द्वारा हम जीवन के खतरों से सुरक्षित थे; वस्तुतः हम अपने स्वप्निल संसार में आनंदमग्न थे। वहीं, पुनर्जन्म का अभिप्राय जीवन, वयस्कता और भविष्य से है। हम समय को पीछे नहीं ले जा सकते, हम भूतकाल में नहीं जी सकते। वास्तविक जीवन से भागना समाधान नहीं है। हमें 'घोंसले' से बाहर निकलना होगा और जीवन का सामना करना होगा। 'स्टारवार्स' मूवी में दिखाए गए भविष्य का जीवन एक दिन वास्तविकता होगी किंतु यह सब अपने आप ही नहीं हो जाएगा। इसके लिए हमें काम करना होगा, त्याग करने होंगे और सही चयन करने होंगे ताकि भविष्य के सपनों का संसार साकार हो सके। वे लोग जो आसमान मंे स्थित एक कपोल- कल्पित सेवानिवृत्ति का स्थान (स्वर्ग) चुनने की बजाय पुनर्जन्म अर्थात् वास्तविक जीवन को चुनंेगे, वही भविष्य की दुनिया का आनंद प्राप्त करेंगे। लेखक धर्मा को आपके विचार जानकर प्रसन्नता होगी। आप HeavenVsReincarnation@yahoo.com पर उनसे संपर्क कर सकते हैं।
