Differential Geometry and Complex Analysis: A Volume Dedicated to the Memory of Harry Ernest Rauch

This volume is dedicated to the memory of Harry Ernest Rauch, who died suddenly on June 18, 1979. In organizing the volume we solicited: (i) articles summarizing Rauch's own work in differential geometry, complex analysis and theta functions (ii) articles which would give the reader an idea of the depth and breadth of Rauch's researches, interests, and influence, in the fields he investigated, and (iii) articles of high scientific quality which would be of general interest. In each of the areas to which Rauch made significant contribution - pinching theorems, teichmiiller theory, and theta functions as they apply to Riemann surfaces - there has been substantial progress. Our hope is that the volume conveys the originality of Rauch's own work, the continuing vitality of the fields he influenced, and the enduring respect for, and tribute to, him and his accom­ plishments in the mathematical community. Diophantine Approximation: Festschrift for Wolfgang Schmidt (Developments in Mathematics)

This volume contains 21 research and survey papers on recent developments in the field of diophantine approximation, which are based on lectures given at a conference at the Erwin Schrödinger-Institute (Vienna, 2003). The articles are either in the spirit of more classical diophantine analysis or of a geometric or combinatorial flavor. Several articles deal with estimates for the number of solutions of diophantine equations as well as with congruences and polynomials.

Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste

No judgment of taste is innocent. In a word, we are all snobs. Pierre Bourdieu brilliantly illuminates this situation of the middle class in the modern world. France’s leading sociologist focuses here on the French bourgeoisie, its tastes and preferences. Distinction is at once a vast ethnography of contemporary France and a dissection of the bourgeois mind. In the course of everyday life people constantly choose between what they find aesthetically pleasing and what they consider tacky, merely trendy, or ugly. Bourdieu bases his study on surveys that took into account the multitude of social factors that play a part in a French person’s choice of clothing, furniture, leisure activities, dinner menus for guests, and many other matters of taste. What emerges from his analysis is that social snobbery is everywhere in the bourgeois world. The different aesthetic choices people make are all distinctions—that is, choices made in opposition to those made by other classes. Taste is not pure. Bourdieu finds a world of social meaning in the decision to order bouillabaisse, in our contemporary cult of thinness, in the “California sports” such as jogging and cross-country skiing. The social world, he argues, functions simultaneously as a system of power relations and as a symbolic system in which minute distinctions of taste become the basis for social judgment. The topic of Bourdieu’s book is a fascinating one: the strategies of social pretension are always curiously engaging. But the book is more than fascinating. It is a major contribution to current debates on the theory of culture and a challenge to the major theoretical schools in contemporary sociology.

Ce livre reproduit un cours inédit de Louis de Broglie, de 1948, dans lequel il réexamine, grâce à la relativité, les analogies entre la mécanique et la thermodynamique étudiés par Helmholtz, Boltzmann et Planck avant le succès de la mécanique statistique. C'est le premier d'une série de travaux de de Broglie en vue de prolonger sa découverte de 1924 vers une mécanique ondulatoire des processus irréversibles, en unifiant les principes de Fermat, de Maupertuis et de Carnot-Clausius. Das Europäische Kartellrecht gewinnt immer mehr an Bedeutung und überlagert in vielfältiger Weise das deutsche System der Kontrolle von Marktabsprachen und Fusionen. So wichtig die Vorschriften im EG-Vertrag zum Kartellrecht sind, so wenig sind bislang deren historische Wurzeln untersucht worden. Dies hängt damit zusammen, daß die Archive der Europäischen Gemeinschaften bis 1983 nicht zugänglich waren. Erst mit der Öffnung der Archive läßt sich rekonstruieren, was sich die Väter der Verträge bei deren Abfassung in den fünfziger Jahren gedacht haben. Im vorliegenden Band werden die geschichtlichen Quellen des europäischen Kartellrechts erstmals veröffentlicht. Den verschiedenen Materialien läßt sich u.a. entnehmen, wie die unterschiedlichen nationalen Marktkonzeptionen europäisch diskutiert werden. Die Interpretation der europäischen Verträge gewinnt eine historische Dimension, aus der sich auch für das geltende Recht viele neue Aspekte ableiten lassen. Düngung der Kulturpflanzen: Erste Hälfte (Handbuch der Pflanzenernährung und Düngung #3 / 1)

Seit dem Erscheinen des zweibändigen Standardwerkes von F. HONCAMP, "Handbuch der Pflanzenernährung und Düngerlehre", sind mehr als dreißig Jahre vergangen. Bei den stürmischen Fortschritten auf allen Gebieten der Natur­ wissenschaften, insbesondere der Chemie, Pflanzenphysiologie, Biochemie, Bodenkunde und Technologie, ist dieses zur Zeit seines Erscheinens so aus­ gezeichnete Handbuch natürlich längst veraltet. Zweifellos besteht heute ein dringendes Bedürfnis nach einem ähnlichen Werk. Wenn wir von dem ursprünglichen Plan abgekommen sind, das HONCAMP­ sche Handbuch in neuer Auflage zu bearbeiten, so vor allem deswegen, weil die tiefgreifende Entwicklung auf diesem Gebiet eine völlig neue Gestaltung des Werkes geboten erscheinen ließ. Es gliedert sich nun in drei Bände. Band I behandelt im wesentlichen die physiologischen Grundlagen der Pflanzenernährung. Er enthält eine ausführliche und systematische Darstellung der eigentlichen Ernährungsphysiologie. Auf eine Erörterung der allgemeinen pflanzen­ physiologischen Grundlagen konnte dabei verzichtet werden, weil im RUHLAND­ sehen "Handbuch der Pflanzenphysiologie" ein umfassendes und modernes Nach­ schlagewerk zur Verfügung steht. Band II beschäftigt sich mit dem Boden und den Düngemitteln. Unter Berücksichtigung der modernen Agrikulturchemie haben wir das heutige Wissen über den Boden als Standort und Nährstoffquelle der Pflanze unter den Verhält­ nissen der landwirtschaftlichen Praxis und des Gartenbaues bzw. des Forstwesens systematisch zusammengefaßt. Die folgenden Kapitel befassen sich mit der Beschreibung und Herstellung der verschiedenen Wirtschafts- und Handels­ düngemittel. Gerade auf diesem Gebiet bestehen in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur erhebliche Lücken, da keine größeren Lehr-oder Handbücher vorhanden sind, die sich eingehender mit der Technologie der Düngemittel und der Düngung beschäftigen.
