Responsive Ethics and Participation: Science, Technology and Democracy

by Kalli Giannelos Bernard Reber Neelke Doorn

Taking stock of the overall confused picture that research and innovation (R&I) literature and practices offer with regard to citizen and stakeholder participation, this book provides a methodical conceptual and an empirical analysis to determine the connection between ethics and participation. Strong theoretical pillars in the fields of ethics, politics and responsible research and innovation (RRI) form the backbone of this critical approach to participation, which considers new approaches to democratic participation. Taking into account a number of participatory processes, Responsive Ethics and Participation establishes a new methodology to differentiate, classify and understand the added value of the participation of citizens and stakeholders in R&I.Participation could be considered the epitome of innovation ethics. However, its multidimensionality, its ethical and theoretical grounds and the nature of the involvement and related outcomes must be clarified at the outset, in order to reach active forms of participation. Ethical participation is required for reliable developments in science and technology, which is what this book ultimately demonstrates.

Théorie spectrale et mécanique quantique (Mathématiques et Applications #87)

by Mathieu Lewin

*** This book presents the spectral theory of self-adjoint operators on Hilbert space, with applications to quantum mechanics. The concept of self-adjointness in infinite dimension was discovered by John von Neumann in the 1930s and it is much more involved than in the case of Hermitian matrices in finite dimension. The book also provides an introduction to quantum mechanics, suitable for students with a mathematics background. The presentation provides numerous physical examples illustrating the abstract theory. The last two chapters present recent results on Schrödinger’s equation for systems of particles. No previous knowledge of physics is required for the book.Based on the author’s teaching and intended for graduate courses, this French language textbook can also serve as a useful introduction to the topic for more advanced readers.

The Time of the Landscape: On the Origins of the Aesthetic Revolution

by Jacques Ranciere

The time of the landscape is not the time when people started describing gardens, mountains and lakes in poems or representing them in works of art: it is the time when the landscape imposed itself as a specific object of thought. It is the time when both the harmony of arranged gardens and the disharmony of wild nature led to a revolution in the criteria of the beautiful and in the meaning of the word &“art.&” It coincided with the birth of aesthetics, understood as a regime for shaping how art is seen and thought, and also with the French Revolution, understood as a revolution in the very idea of what binds together a human community. The time of the landscape is the time when the conjunction of these two upheavals brought into focus, however hazily, a common horizon: that of a revolution that no longer concerns only the laws of the state or the norms of art, but the very forms of sensible experience. This brilliant and wide-ranging book will be of interest to students and scholars in philosophy, literature, the visual arts, and the humanities generally, and to anyone interested in critical theory and philosophy.

When Form Becomes Substance: Power of Gestures, Diagrammatical Intuition and Phenomenology of Space

by Luciano Boi Carlos Lobo

This interdisciplinary volume collects contributions from experts in their respective fields with as common theme diagrams.Diagrams play a fundamental role in the mathematical visualization and philosophical analysis of forms in space. Some of the most interesting and profound recent developments in contemporary sciences, whether in topology, geometry, dynamic systems theory, quantum field theory or string theory, have been made possible by the introduction of new types of diagrams, which, in addition to their essential role in the discovery of new classes of spaces and phenomena, have contributed to enriching and clarifying the meaning of the operations, structures and properties that are at the heart of these spaces and phenomena. The volume gives a closer look at the scope and the nature of diagrams as constituents of mathematical and physical thought, their function in contemporary artistic work, and appraise, in particular, the actual importance of the diagrams of knots, of braids, of fields, of interaction, of strings in topology and geometry, in quantum physics and in cosmology, but also in theory of perception, in plastic arts and in philosophy. The editors carefully curated this volume to be an inspiration to students and researchers in philosophy, phenomenology, mathematics and the sciences, as well as artists, musicians and the general interested audience.

A Feminist Theory of Violence: A Decolonial Perspective

by Françoise Vergès

'A robust, decolonial challenge to carceral feminism' - Angela Y. Davis ***Winner of an English PEN Award 2022*** The mainstream conversation surrounding gender equality is a repertoire of violence: harassment, rape, abuse, femicide. These words suggest a cruel reality. But they also hide another reality: that of gendered violence committed with the complicity of the State. In this book, Françoise Vergès denounces the carceral turn in the fight against sexism. By focusing on 'violent men', we fail to question the sources of their violence. There is no doubt as to the underlying causes: racial capitalism, ultra-conservative populism, the crushing of the Global South by wars and imperialist looting, the exile of millions and the proliferation of prisons – these all put masculinity in the service of a policy of death. Against the spirit of the times, Françoise Vergès refuses the punitive obsession of the State in favour of restorative justice.

Aventures théâtrales: Guide d’utilisation de la pratique théâtrale en FLE au niveau post-secondaire

by Catherine Black Louise Chaput Tessie Mengin Annie Poirier

Aventures théâtrales is a practical guide designed to provide language instructors with the tools to use drama in French language courses, providing essential resources to develop learners’ communication skills through drama activities in the classroom. This book is structured around four axes: The origins of the use of theatre in teaching; the pronunciation of French adapted to dramatic activities; a repertoire of activities leading to the production from A to Z of a show; and the digital adventure: establishing an emotional and energetic connection between participants in a virtual setting. The book also offers a unique exploration of audio theatre, from radio plays to podcasts, with guidance on practical applications outside of the classroom setting. The remote and in person exercises included in this book are an invaluable resource for instructors. Aventures théâtrales is intended for instructors of French at B2 (CEFR) or intermediate (ACTFL) level interested in using drama in courses teaching French as a foreign or second language.

Le marchand et les poids et mesures (Variorum Collected Studies)

by Jean-Claude Hocquet

Published in French in this Variorum volume, these chapters represent over twenty years of scholarship and publication. Many have been updated and translated from German and Italian into French for the first time. The chapters all deal with merchants, of whom the author is a world-renowned specialist, and their use of local weights and measures during the Middle Ages and the modern period. The reader is taken on a journey from the Carolingian Empire to pre-Columbian Mexico and post-colonial Java or Madagascar, from the measures of ancient Rome to the aluminium can of the 21st century. As the author has specialised in the history of salt and saltworks or of the sea, the book also makes room for salt springs, fish and fishing ports in northern Europe, and finally the scholarly investigation leads to the history of food, bread and cereals. The book expands on the earlier survey published in the Variorum series, which dealt mainly with Venice and salt, and was very well received by the educated public, who still wonder how people overcame the chaos of the old measures. The revolution of 1789 put an end to this situation by inventing the metre and the decimal system.
