Théories spectrales: Chapitres 1 et 2

by N. Bourbaki

The Elements of Mathematics of Nicolas Bourbaki have the goal of giving a rigorous and systematic presentation of mathematics starting from the foundations, without prerequisites. The book of Spectral Theories is devoted to the study of normed algebras and their applications. The first chapter establishes the basic theory of Banach algebras and C*-algebras. We present the equivalence of categories between commutative C*-algebras and locally compact topological spaces, as well as the holomorphic functional calculus in several variables in a commutative Banach algebra. The Fourier transform, which is one of the most universal mathematical tools, is studied in the second chapter, in the context of locally compact commutative topological groups. The text is accompanied by many exercices. These two chapters are completely updated new versions of the 1967 original edition.

Théories spectrales: Chapitres 3 à 5

by N. Bourbaki

Thermoinelasticity: Symposium East Kilbride, June 25–28, 1968 (IUTAM Symposia)

by Bruno A. Boley

The proposal for a Symposium on high temperature effects in solids originated in 1964, at which time a pilot committee, headed by Professor F. K. G. ODQVIST, was formed. Upon the recommendation of this com mittee, a site for the Symposium and a Scientific Organizing Committee were chosen, and some guidelines delineating the field to be covered were established. The Symposium was held at the National Engineering Laboratory in East Kilbride (Glasgow), Scotland, from June 25 to 28, 1968. The Scientific Organizing Committee was composed of the following mem bers: Professor B. A. BOLEY, Chairman (U. S. A.) Professor F. BUCKENS (Belgium) Professor F. K. G. ODQVIST (Sweden) Professor W. OLSZAK (Poland) Professor H. PARKUS (Austria) Dr. D. G. SOPWITH (U. K.) The Local Organizing Committee was subsequently formed; it was direct ed by Dr. SOPWTTH with Mr. R. BRODIE as Secretary, and Mr. C. E. PHILLIPS and Dr. J. GLEN as additional members. It deserves ample praise for excellent arrangements and hospitality. In the discussions concerned with the goals of the Symposium, it was decided that its principal aim should be the presentation of a comprehen sive view of the behavior of solids and structures at high temperature under any type of inelastic regime. It soon became apparent that this was a very wide field, since it would embrace questions ranging from those of basic thermodynamic to those of engineering analysis and design.

Third International Conference on System Science in Health Care: Troisième Conférence Internationale sur la Science des Systèmes dans le Domaine de la Santé (Health Systems Research)

by Wilhelm Van Eimeren Rolf Engelbrecht Charles D. Flagle

In the early stages of planning the Third International Conference in System Science in Health Care, the steering committee members, most of whom had participated in the first conference in Paris (1976) and the second in Montreal (1980), made some basic decisions about organization of subject matter. The earlier meetings had been very successful in bringing together specialists from the health professions and the traditional sciences. In addition to physicians and nurses, these were representatives of the disciplines of the behavioral sciences, system theory, economics, engineering, and the emergency fields of management science and informatics -all concerned with the development of health resources in a broad system context. The reported research and experience of the many disciplines represented had dealt with one or more of three concerns: 1) a major health problem, such as cardiovascular disease, or an important popUlation at risk, such as the elderly or children or workers; 2) some generic aspect of organization and decision making, including trial and evaluation ofinnovative health strategies; and 3) the methodology of research and analysis in system of health service. The challenge to the conference organizers lay in the eliciting and arranging of experiences in such a way that the health services could be seen as purposeful, living, evolving systems.

Thomas Annan of Glasgow: Pioneer Of The Documentary Photograph

by Lionel Gossman

In the wake of Glasgow’s transformation in the nineteenth-century into an industrial powerhouse, the "Second City of the Empire,” a substantial part of the old town of Adam Smith degenerated into an overcrowded and disease-ridden slum. The Old Closes and Streets of Glasgow, Thomas Annan’s photographic record of this central section of the city prior to its demolition in accordance with the City of Glasgow Improvements Act of 1866, is widely recognized as a classic of nineteenth-century documentary photography. Annan’s achievement as a photographer of paintings and a portrait and landscape photographer is less widely known. Thomas Annan: Photographer of Victorian Scotland offers a handy, comprehensive and copiously illustrated overview of the full range of the photographer’s work. The book opens with a brief account of the immediate context of Annan’s career as a photographer: the astonishing florescence of photography in Victorian Scotland. Successive chapters deal with each of the main fields of his activity, touching along the way on issues such as the nineteenth-century debate over the status of photography — a mechanical practice or an artistic one? — and the still ongoing controversies surrounding the documentary photograph in particular. While the text itself is intended for the general reader, extensive endnotes amplify particular themes and offer guidance to readers interested in pursuing these themes further.

Time and Narrative, Volume 1

by Paul Ricoeur

Time and Narrative builds on Paul Ricoeur's earlier analysis, in The Rule of Metaphor, of semantic innovation at the level of the sentence. Ricoeur here examines the creation of meaning at the textual level, with narrative rather than metaphor as the ruling concern. Ricoeur finds a "healthy circle" between time and narrative: time is humanized to the extent that it portrays temporal experience. Ricoeur proposes a theoretical model of this circle using Augustine's theory of time and Aristotle's theory of plot and, further, develops an original thesis of the mimetic function of narrative. He concludes with a comprehensive survey and critique of modern discussions of historical knowledge, understanding, and writing from Aron and Mandelbaum in the late 1930s to the work of the Annales school and that of Anglophone philosophers of history of the 1960s and 1970s. "This work, in my view, puts the whole problem of narrative, not to mention philosophy of history, on a new and higher plane of discussion."—Hayden White, History and Theory "Superb. . . . A fine point of entrance into the work of one of the eminent thinkers of the present intellectual age."—Joseph R. Gusfield, Contemporary Sociology

The Time of the Landscape: On the Origins of the Aesthetic Revolution

by Jacques Ranciere

The time of the landscape is not the time when people started describing gardens, mountains and lakes in poems or representing them in works of art: it is the time when the landscape imposed itself as a specific object of thought. It is the time when both the harmony of arranged gardens and the disharmony of wild nature led to a revolution in the criteria of the beautiful and in the meaning of the word &“art.&” It coincided with the birth of aesthetics, understood as a regime for shaping how art is seen and thought, and also with the French Revolution, understood as a revolution in the very idea of what binds together a human community. The time of the landscape is the time when the conjunction of these two upheavals brought into focus, however hazily, a common horizon: that of a revolution that no longer concerns only the laws of the state or the norms of art, but the very forms of sensible experience. This brilliant and wide-ranging book will be of interest to students and scholars in philosophy, literature, the visual arts, and the humanities generally, and to anyone interested in critical theory and philosophy.

To Save the Phenomena: An Essay on the Idea of Physical Theory from Plato to Galileo

by Pierre Duhem

Duhem's 1908 essay questions the relation between physical theory and metaphysics and, more specifically, between astronomy and physics–an issue still of importance today. He critiques the answers given by Greek thought, Arabic science, medieval Christian scholasticism, and, finally, the astronomers of the Renaissance.

Topie Impitoyable: The Corporeal Politics of the Cloth, the Wall, and the Street / Les politiques corporelles du vêtement, du mur et la rue

by Léopold Lambert

What is a body? This book is more attached to raising the question than in offering a definitive answer. Instead, Lambert proposes to make more complex certain commonplaces located at various degrees of proximity to the body’s material assemblage, allowing a better integration of the surrounding objects, atmosphere and other bodies and proposing a political reading of their relationship to the body, whether deliberate or accidental. From the hoodie that Trayvon Martin wore when he was killed in the suburbs of Miami Gardens, Florida, to the streets of New York City during Occupy Wall Street and the apartheid wall in Palestine, this book moves through a series of episodes that illustrate how bodies and objects of all sizes are enmeshed in deeply entangled political relationships.

Topologie algébrique: Chapitres 1 à 4

by N. Bourbaki

2. Folge #64)

by Monique Hakim

This monograph is devoted to the problems of modules in scheme theory; the main purpose is to develop relative scheme theory over a ringed space. The exposition contains 8 chapters. Chapters I and II are devoted to the necessary information about 2-categories which simplifies the utilization of toposes. 2-category is a category in which the sets Hom are categories and where maps between Hom's have functorial nature. One studies U-toposes by means of this notion in chapter II, U being a fixed universimum. One introduces the notion of ringed U-toposand studies U-toposes ringed by local and strict local rings in chapter III. In the same chapter one solves the corresponding universal problem and as a result introduces the spectrum of ringed U-topos in chapter IV, what makes it possible to define the category of relative schemes over a ringed topos. In chapter V-VII the theory of relative S-schemes is developed where S is a ringed topos; then this theory applies to studying of the algebraic-analytic equivalence in chapter VIII. A. A. Bel'skii.

Total Performance Scorecard: Réconcilier l'homme et l'entreprise

by Hubert K. Rampersad
