CAD/CAM Robotics and Factories of the Future: Volume II: Automation of Design, Analysis and Manufacturing

This volume is about automation - automation in design, automation in manufacturing, and automation in production. Automation is essen­ tial for increased productivity of quality products at reduced costs. That even partial or piecemeal automation of a production facility can deliver dramatic improvements in productivity has been amply demon­ strated in many a real-life situation. Hence, currently, great ef­ forts are being devoted to research and development of general as well special methodologies of and tools for automation. This volume re­ ports on some of these methodologies and tools. In general terms, methodologies for automation can be divided into two groups. There are situations where a process, whether open-loop or closed-loop, is fairly clearly understood. In such a situation, it is possible to create a mathematical model and to prescribe a mathe­ matical procedure to optimize the output. If such mathematical models and procedures are computationally tractable, we call the correspond­ ing automation - algorithmic or parametric programming. There is, however, a second set of situations which include process­ es that are not well understood and the available mathematical models are only approximate and discrete. While there are others for which mathematical procedures are so complex and disjoint that they are computationally intractable. These are the situations for which heuristics are quite suitable for automation. We choose to call such automation, knowledge-based automation or heuristic programming.

CAD/CAM Robotics and Factories of the Future: Volume III: Robotics and Plant Automation

The complete shop floor automation - a "lights out factory", where workers initially set up all machines, turn off the lights, lock the door and the machine churns up the parts - remains an unfulfilled dream. Yet when we look at the enormity of the process of automation and integration even for the most simply conceived part factory, we can recognize that automation has been applied and is being applied, more so when it made sense from a cost/benefit standpoint. It is our nature to be dissatisfied with near term progress, but when we realize how short a time the tools to do that automation have been available, the progress is clearly noteworthy - considering the multitudes of factors and the environment we have to deal with. Most of the automa­ tion problems we confront in today's environment are multidisciplinary in nature. They require not just the knowledge and experience in various distinct fields but good cooperation from different disci­ plined organizations to adequately comprehend and solve such problems. In Volume III we have many examples that reflect the current state of the art techniques of robotics and plant automation. The papers for Volume III have been arranged in a logical order of automation planning, automated assembly, robot programming and simula­ tion, control, motion coordination, communication and networking to factories of the future.

Hochtemperaturreaktortechnik

Das Konzept des Hochtemperaturreaktors (HTR) zeichnet sich durch "inhärente Sicherheit" aus; weitere Vorzüge liegen darin, daß bereits kleinere Einheiten wirtschaftlich betrieben werden und nicht nur zur Stromerzeugung, sondern auch in der Wärme- und Verfahrenstechnik eingesetzt werden können. Damit ist der HTR als Alternative zu den bisher favorisierten Reaktorlinien in das öffentliche Interesse getreten. Das Buch vermittelt nicht nur technische Fakten, sondern erläutert die physikalischen und technischen Prinzipien zum Verständnis der Funktion und stellt die notwendigen Grundlagen für die Auslegung des Kugelhaufenreaktors zur Verfügung. Die Komponenten werden ausführlich beschrieben. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Diskussion der Sicherheitseigenschaften bzw. des Störfallverhaltens; ebenso werden die Konzepte zur Brennstoffversorgung bzw. -entsorgung vorgestellt. Das Buch beschreibt den Entwurf und die Entwicklung des Expertensystems ICX, das, verbunden mit einem CAD-System, bei der Gestaltung, Dimensionierung, Planung und Ausführung einer Kunststoff-Metall-Klebung dem Konstrukteur hilfreich zur Seite steht. Unter der Kontrolle eines übergeordneten Systems werden dabei mehrere Expertensysteme aktiviert, um dem interdisziplinären Charakter des verwendeten Wissens gerecht zu werden. Metalle und Legierungen werden in der technischen Praxis als Konstruktionswerkstoffe für Bauteile eingesetzt, die im Betrieb eine Wechselbeanspruchung erfahren. Als Folge dieser Beanspruchung laufen mikrostrukturelle Veränderungen ab, die sich makroskopisch im Wechselverformungsverhalten äußern und letztlich das Versagen des Bauteils verursachen können. Im vorliegenden Buch wird das zyklische Spannungs-Dehnungs-Verhalten metallischer Werkstoffe auf der Grundlage der mikrostrukturellen Vorgänge in wissenschaftlicher und gleichzeitig lehrbuchartiger Form behandelt. Die Einbeziehung der Mikrostruktur bei dieser Betrachtung dient dabei nicht nur zur Vertiefung des Verständnisses, sondern hat darüber hinaus das Ziel, ausgehend von einfachen Laborexperimenten, auf das Verformungsverhalten unter den meist komplexen Bedingungen des technischen Einsatzes schließen zu können. Es wird gezeigt, daß aufgrund der räumlichen Heterogenität der plastischen Verformung Vielkomponentenmodelle zur Beschreibung des zyklischen Verformungsverhaltens physikalisch gerechtfertigt sind. Die statistische Behandlung zweier einfacher Modelle liefert mathematische Beziehungen, die es erlauben, eine quantitative Modellierung des Spannungs-Dehnungs-Verlaufes durchzuführen. Die Voraussetzungen, der Anwendungsbereich und Erweiterungsmöglichkeiten dieser Modellierung werden dargestellt.

Renewable Energy-2000

The limited available of fossil energy carriers and the environmental impacts of energy consumtion demand mid-and long-term strategies both for the rational use of energy and for increased renewable energy utilization. Concepts of renewable energy conversion have been proposed and implemented during recent decades allover the world and their remarkable potential has been demonstrated. However, large scale implementation in the context of the requirements above has not yet taken place. The EUREC (European Renewable Energy Centres) Agency - an association of 25 European research centres from 11 EC countries, provides a framework of leading experts in the field of renewable energies, focusing on assessment studies, joint projects in research and development and on proposing future strategies in a European context. Under the leadership of Professor Wrixon, with the assistance and contributions of experts from the EUREC Agency, the document 'Renewable Energy - 2000' has been elaborated. This document critically evaluates the potential of renewable energies, focusing on the most relevant sources and methodologies, namely: wind energy, solar heating, cooling and daylighting, photovoltaics and biomass. It also proposes strategies for implementing components and systems to achieve economic operation in different regions of the European Community. It thereby makes use of the expert knowledge and experience concentrated in EUREC Agency member institutions.

Acoustics of Layered Media I: Plane and Quasi-Plane Waves (Springer Series on Wave Phenomena #5)

This monograph is devoted to the systematic presentation of the theory of sound­ wave propagation in layered structures. These structures can be man-made, such as ultrasonic filters, lenses, surface-wave delay lines, or natural media, such as the ocean and the atmosphere, with their marked horizontal stratification. A related problem is the propagation of elastic (seismic) waves in the earth's crust These topics have been treated rather completely in the book by L. M. Brek­ hovskikh, Waves in Layered Media, the English version of the second edition of which was published by Academic Press in 1980. Due to progress in experimental and computer technology it has become possible to analyze the influence of factors such as medium motion and density stratification upon the propagation of sound waves. Much attention has been paid to propagation theory in near-stratified media, Le. , media with small deviations from strict stratification. Interesting results have also been obtained in the fields of acoustics which had been previously considered to be "completely" developed. For these reasons, and also because of the inflow of researchers from the related fields of physics and mathematics, the circle of persons and research groups engaged in the study of sound propagation has rather expanded. Therefore, the appearance of a new summary review of the field of acoustics of layered media has become highly desirable. Since Waves in Layered Media became quite popular, we have tried to retain its positive features and general structure.

Power Electronic Converters: DC-DC Conversion (Electric Energy Systems and Engineering Series)

This book is the third in a series of four devoted to POWER ELECTRONIC CONVERTERS: The first of these concerns AC to DC conversion. The second concerns AC to AC conversion. This volume examines DC to DC conversion. The fourth is devoted to DC to AC conversion. Converters which carry out the DC-DC conversion operate by chopping the input voltage or current: they are called choppers or switch-mode power converters. Their operating frequency is not imposed by either the input or the output, both of which are at zero frequency. A frequency which is much greater than that of the industrial network can be chosen, provided that suitable configurations and semiconductor devices are used. This is the first difference compared to the rectifiers and AC-AC converters, analyzed in the previous volumes and which often operate at the industrial network frequency. The second difference concerns the commutation mode. Choppers operate in forced commutation. The beginning of an operating phase does not auto­ matically turn off the semiconductor devices which were conducting during the previous phase and which have to be brought to the blocking state. This turn-off must be carried out autonomously. These two differences - the higher frequency of commutations and, espe­ cially, the different mode of commutation -justify the first two chapters in this work: - Chapter 1 examines general notions concerning converters, supplies and loads, and more especially, how they can be characterized with regard to commutations.

Heat Transfer in Condensation and Boiling (International Series in Heat and Mass Transfer)

I welcome the opportunity to have my book translated, because of the great emphasis on two-phase flow and heat transfer in the English-speaking world, as related to research, university education, and industrial practice. The 1988 Springer-Verlag edition of "Warmeiibergang beim Kondensieren und beim Sieden" has been enlarged to include additional material on falling film evaporation (Chapter 12) and pressure drop in two-phase flow (Chapter 13). Minor errors in the original text have also been corrected. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Professor Green, Asso­ ciate Professor of German at Rensselaer, for his excellent translation and co­ operation.
