El arte de amar
by OvidOvidio nació en el año 43 a. C. en Sulmo, no muy lejos de Roma, y murió desterrado en una remota aldea del Ponto, Tomis. El arte de amar y El remedio del amor, entre otros motivos, ocasionaron su destierro, que le fue impuesto por Augusto, quien permaneció siempre implacable a los ruegos del poeta para que le permitiese regresar a Roma. Escritos con refinamiento poético, con talante lúdico y un tanto irónico, muy atentos a las escenas amorosas y a las peripecias eróticas, utilizando con desenfado los antiguos mitos clásicos, estos libros son tratados con ligereza, e incluso con "levedad", que es lo que confiere a su autor una modernidad indiscutible. Están inspirados por una misteriosa mujer, Corina, que no sabemos si corresponde a una figura real, pero que Los amores hicieron tan famosa como la Lesbia de Catulo, o la Cintia de Propercio.

by قسطندي رزقلقد أُشربت محبة المرحوم عبده الحمولي منذ نعومة أظفاري يوم خالط المرحوم والدي بالزقازيق وزارنا في دارنا وغنانا غناءه العربي؛ فأعجبت به أيما إعجاب وارتسمت في ذهني صورة العروبة الفخمة بما مثَّل أمامنا من الحركات والأقوال التي صوَّرت لي إباء العرب وفروسيتهم وعظمتهم، وما أتاه من شجيّ التلحين وحسن الأداء، وتفخيم اللفظ الدال على معناه، والإبانة في مخارج الحروف، فهو حرىُّ بأن يكنى بغريد الشرق الذي لا تفتح العين على مثله، وأخذت منذ ذلك الحين أشعر بتيار موسيقى يتمشى في عروقي إلى أن أضحيت من المولعين بالغناء العربي الذي لا أصبو إلا إليه، وحزت ملكة التمييز بين جيده ورديئه لا سيما إذا سمعت ركزا لخليط مجدد. ولما هبَّ على الموسيقى العربية عاصف التجديد، وحاول أن يقتلع جذورها من تربتها المباركة الخصبة، شمرت لصد ذلك التيار عنها غيرة على عظمتها وسحرها، واتقاء للرمق الباقي منها، إذ هي الآن والعياذ بالله واقفة على مفترق طريقين لا محيد لها عن سلوك واحد منهما، فإما أن تحيا وتستعيد ماضي شبابها إذا تداركها أولو الأمر منا، وإما أن يسجل عليها الموت الذي لا حياة بعده إذا ألقينا حبل المجددين على غاربهم يجهزون على تلحيننا القومي ويرتضخون لَكْنَةً غربية بدلا من ترديد نبرنا العربي،

But it is far more than that implies. Like his other early works, Iaiá Garcia foreshadows the themes and characters of Assis's most masterful novels. Iaiá Garcia intertwines the lives of three characters in a subtly and wryly developing relationship. While the youthful Iaiá is growing into womanhood, a tentative love affair occurs between the aristocratic Jorge and the prideful Estela. This affair is afflicted by ironic shifts of fortune and in time the maturing Iaiá becomes a rival for Jorge's attentions. Assis's portrayal of the relationship among these three characters is a perceptive study of uncompromising pride, thwarted love, jealousy, misunderstanding, bewilderment, and attainment. As the translator, Albert I. Bagby, Jr., contends, the story of Iaiá, Jorge, and Estela reflects the formula that Assis saw as fundamental to human life: "Will and ambition, when they truly dominate, can struggle with other feelings, but they are the weapons of the strong, and victory belongs to the strong." In Assis's view success comes to the strong and failure to the weak. But both inhabit a world that is neutral-neither helping one nor hindering the other. The outcome of events in Iaiá Garcia may not seem entirely optimistic, but neither is it pessimistic. And Mr. Bagby concludes, "Perhaps to understand the optimism of Assis one needs only to be ... a hard, pragmatic realist .... " Whether hard realists or unregenerate romantics, readers of this novel will find it a compelling tale of love lost and won. Like his earlier translation of Assis's The Hand & the Glove, Mr. Bagby's English rendering of Iaiá Garcia from the original Portuguese is done with both accuracy and sensitivity.
