Bilingualism, Multiculturalism, and Second Language Learning: The Mcgill Conference in Honour of Wallace E. Lambert

by Allan G. Reynolds

This collection pays tribute to Professor Wallace E. Lambert and his contributions to the fields of language and linguistics. Each chapter, written by an internationally renowned theorist or researcher, traces the currents of theory and research within the topic area to the present day, provides a state-of-the-art review of the topic, and offers an outline for future research directions. The book concludes with an overview from Professor Lambert that critically examines the impact of the ideas in each individual chapter. This volume is organized around the three areas where Professor Lambert's unique contributions are most substantial and most evident: bilingualism, multiculturalism, and second language learning. Specifically, the papers presented discuss the topics of social, psychological, cognitive, and neuropsychological aspects of bilingualism and second language learning, the psychology of inter-group relations and multiculturalism, bilingual/immersion education, and language planning. Note: Royalties earned from sales of this book will go to the Wallace E. Lambert Student Research Fund at McGill University for use by students interested in second language acquisition, bilingualism, and/or multiculturalism.

Biological and Behavioral Determinants of Language Development

by Norman A. Krasnegor Richard L. Schiefelbusch Michael Studdert-Kennedy Duane M. Rumbaugh

This book presents a current, interdisciplinary perspective on language requisites from both a biological/comparative perspective and from a developmental/learning perspective. Perspectives regarding language and language acquisition are advanced by scientists of various backgrounds -- speech, hearing, developmental psychology, comparative psychology, and language intervention. This unique volume searches for a rational interface between findings and perspectives generated by language studies with humans and with chimpanzees. Intended to render a reconsideration as to the essence of language and the requisites to its acquisition, it also provides readers with perspectives defined by various revisionists who hold that language might be other than the consequence of a mutation unique to humans and might, fundamentally, not be limited to speech.

Cognition and the Symbolic Processes: Applied and Ecological Perspectives

by Robert R. Hoffman David S. Palermo

This volume is a festschrift dedicated to James J. Jenkins, a pioneer in many areas of experimental psychology. It has three major goals: to provide a forum for debate on current theoretical issues in cognitive psychology, to capture the "state of the art" in reviews of research methods and results, and to generate ideas for new research directions and methodologies. Contributors -- including Jenkins' former students and present colleagues -- ponder fundamental questions such as: * How do people learn to read? * What happens during the processes of speech perception? * How do people acquire problem solving skills? * How do cognitive and motor skills develop and integrate with one another? Many chapters focus specifically on ecological and applied cognitive psychology. Specific topics covered include visual and speech perception, language, memory, motivation, child development, problem solving, and pedagogy.

Communicating Ideas: The Politics of Scholarly Publishing

by Irving Louis Horowitz

Communicating Ideas is the first attempt to place publishing in America in its political and commercial setting. The book addresses the political implications of scholarly communication in the era of the new computerized technology. Horowitz does so by examining classic problems of political theory in the context of property rights versus the presumed right to know, and the special strains involved in publishing as a business versus information as a public trust Offering a knowledgeable and insightful view of publishing in America and abroad, this book makes an important contribution to the study of mass culture in advanced societies. The discussion ranges considerably beyond scholarly publications into communication as a whole, encompassing a wide range of issues from cable and satelite television control to specialized issues in copyright legislation, the prize system in publishing, and the definition of standards of the industry. This new edition, expanded by fully one third, expands on such themes, and in addition deals with Horowitz's new research on the history of social science publishing. The first edition, published in 1986, was described by WE. Coleman as "a marvelous book which indeed offers a realistic analysis of publishing." John P. Dessauer declared that "no one thinking seriously about the future of scholarly communication can afford to ignore his work, in particular his treatment of basic issues." Joseph Gusfield (Los Angeles Times), in his review, noted that "Horowitz is alive to the possibilities and barriers for academics to reach a wider audience and for lay persons to utilize scholarship. Both groups can learn much from this intelligent book." And Philip G. Altbach (Scholarly Publishing) concluded his review by saying that Communicating Ideas "will be of interest not only to publishers and editors, but also to librarians and to sociologists of science."

Contemporary Public Opinion: Issues and the News

by Maxwell McCombs

This book discusses the public opinion process with a focus on the role that the news media play in shaping public opinion. Although heavily influenced by the agenda-setting perspective -- the view that the news media define the important issues of the day and determine how these issues are presented -- the authors neither support nor refute this claim. They present instead a variety of contemporary scholarship integrated into a coherent picture of public opinion for a general audience.

Datenbankzugriff in offenen Rechnernetzen (Informationstechnik und Datenverarbeitung)

by Stefan Pappe

Debate and Critical Analysis: The Harmony of Conflict (Routledge Communication Series)

by Robert James Branham

Rather than approach debate primarily as a form of interscholastic competition, this unique book identifies it as an activity that occurs in many settings: scientific conferences, newspaper op-ed pages, classrooms, courts of law, and everyday domestic life. Debate is discussed as an integral part of academic inquiry in all disciplines. As in all fields of study, various competing views are advanced and supported; Debate and Critical Analysis is designed to better prepare the student to assess and engage them. This text posits four characteristics of true debate -- argument development, clash, extension, and perspective -- which form the basic structure of the book. Each concept or aspect of argument covered is illustrated by an example drawn from contemporary or historical sources, allowing the reader to actually see the techniques and strategies at work. All popular forms of competitive debate, including "policy," "Lincoln-Douglas," "value-oriented," and "parliamentary," are discussed in detail -- as embedded in the actual topical controversies with which they are concerned. In this way, the student can learn the structures, reasoning processes, and strategies that may be employed, as well as the practical affairs of debating, from brief-writing to the flowsheet.

Delta-4: A Generic Architecture for Dependable Distributed Computing (Research Reports Esprit #1)

by David Powell

Delta-4 is a 5-nation, 13-partner project that has been investigating the achievement of dependability in open distributed systems, including real-time systems. This book describes the design and validation of the distributed fault-tolerant architecture developed within this project. The key features of the Delta-4 architecture are: (a) a distributed object-oriented application support environment; (b) built-in support for user-transparent fault tolerance; (c) use of multicast or group communication protocols; and (d) use of standard off the-shelf processors and standard local area network technology with minimum specialized hardware. The book is organized as follows: The first 3 chapters give an overview of the architecture's objectives and of the architecture itself, and compare the proposed solutions with other approaches. Chapters 4 to 12 give a more detailed insight into the Delta-4 architectural concepts. Chapters 4 and 5 are devoted to providing a firm set of general concepts and terminology regarding dependable and real-time computing. Chapter 6 is centred on fault-tolerance techniques based on distribution. The description of the architecture itself commences with a description of the Delta-4 application support environment (Deltase) in chapter 7. Two variants of the architecture - the Delta-4 Open System Architecture (OSA) and the Delta-4 Extra Performance Architecture (XPA) - are described respectively in chapters 8 and 9. Both variants of the architecture have a common underlying basis for dependable multicasting, i. e.

Digital Image Processing: Concepts, Algorithms, and Scientific Applications

by Bernd Jähne

Intended as a practical guide, the book takes the reader from basic concepts to up-to-date research topics in digital image processing. Only little special knowledge in computer sciences is required since many principles and mathematical tools widely used in natural sciences are also applied in digital image processing thus the reader with a general background in natural science gets an easy access to the material presented. The book discusses the following topics: image acquisition and digitization; linear and nonlinear filter operations; edge detection; local orientation and texture; fast algorithms on pyramidal and multigrid data structures; morphological operations to detect the shape of objects; segmentation and classification. Further chapters deal with the reconstruction of three-dimensional objects from projections and the analysis of stereo images and image sequences with differential, correlation, and filter algorithms. Many examples from different areas show how the reader can use digital image processing as an experimental tool for image data acquisition and evaluation in his or her research area.

Digitale Bildverarbeitung

by Bernd Jähne

Digitale Kommunikationsnetze: Prinzipien, Einrichtungen, Systeme

by Peter R. Gerke

by Heinz Kronmüller
