In recent decades, theologians and philosophers of religion have engaged in a vigorous debate concerning the status and nature of ecclesiology. Throughout this debate, they have found resources for their arguments in concepts of political philosophy, particularly communitarianism and political liberalism. Cavendish (Arguments of the Philosophers)

Margaret Cavendish (1623 - 1673) was a philosopher, poet, scientist, novelist, and playwright of the seventeenth century. Her work is important for a number of reasons. It presents an early and compelling version of the naturalism that is found in current-day philosophy; it offers important insights that bear on recent discussions of the nature and characteristics of intelligence and the question of whether or not the bodies that surround us are intelligent or have an intelligent cause; it anticipates some of the central views and arguments that are more commonly associated with figures like Thomas Hobbes and David Hume. This is the first full account of Cavendish’s philosophy and covers the whole span of her work. David Cunning begins with an overview of Cavendish’s life and work before assessing her contribution to a wide range of philosophical subjects, including her arguments concerning materialism, experimentation, the existence of God, social and political philosophy and free will and compatibilism. Setting Cavendish in both historical and philosophical context, he argues that like Spinoza she builds on central tenets of Descartes’ philosophy and develops them in a direction that Descartes himself would avoid. She defends a plenum metaphysics according to which all individuals are causally interdependent, and according to which the physical universe is a larger individual that constitutes all of reality. Cellular Automata (CA), about to enter their fifties, are coming of age, seen by the breadth and quality of CA-related research carried out worldwide, as well as by the appearance of interesting applications to real world problems. The papers collected in this book, presented at ACRI 98 (Third Conference on Cellular Automata for Research and Industry -7-9 October 1998), further demonstrate the vitality of this line ofresearch. Until some years ago, a researcher interested in dynamical modelling of spatially of the partial extended systems had only one language at his disposal, namely that differential equations (PDE). These are wonderful tools to use when an analytical solution can be found or a perturbative approach can provide a good approximation of the observed phenomena. The use of digital computers has enormously expanded the explanatory and predictive power of partial differential equations by allowing one to treat cases which had been outside the scope of a "pen and pencil" approach. However, it has also opened up a way to new formalisms which are able to describe interesting phenomena and are, at the same time, well-suited for digital simulation.

Censorship Moments: Reading Texts in the History of Censorship and Freedom of Expression (Textual Moments in the History of Political Thought)

Censorship in varying forms has been part of human experience for 2,500 years and has proved itself to be a recurring presence for political thought, whether as active repression, a shaping context for expression, or as itself a subject for analysis and argument.
