Love, Zac: Small-Town Football and the Life and Death of an American Boy

by Reid Forgrave

"Love, Zac is not just a vital contribution to the national conversation about traumatic brain injury in athletes, it&’s so beautifully written it belongs on the shelf alongside classic works of literary journalism.&” —Jeanne Marie Laskas, New York Times bestselling author of Concussion In December 2015, Zac Easter, a twenty-four-year-old from small-town Iowa, decided to take his own life rather than continue his losing battle against traumatic brain injuries he had sustained as a high school football player and which led him to develop chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). For this deeply reported and powerfully moving true story, award-winning writer Reid Forgrave was given access to Zac&’s own diaries and was able to speak with Zac&’s family, friends, and coaches. He explores Zac&’s tight-knit, football-obsessed Midwestern community; he interviews leading brain scientists, psychologists, and sports historians; he takes a deep dive into the triumphs and sins of the sports entertainment industry; and he shows us the fallout from the traditional notions of manhood that football instills. For parents wondering about whether to allow their kids to play football, for players, former players, and fans, for anyone concerned about concussions and sports, this eye-opening, heart-wrenching, and ultimately inspiring story may be one of the most important books they will read.

Loving and Studying Nature: Celebrating the Earth through History, Culture and Education (International Explorations in Outdoor and Environmental Education #10)

by Malcolm Skilbeck

This volume investigates crucial ways in which nature has been apprehended, understood and valued in different cultures and over time. It is grounded in current global concerns about growing threats to the natural environment. Through a critical appraisal of specific examples, it ranges widely over historical and contemporary attitudes and behaviours. It presents a wide ranging analysis of selected ideas and attitudes in the evolution mainly of western civilisation, from the time of the cave artists to the present day. It argues for preservation and conservation of the natural resources and beauty of the earth in the face of religious supernatural arguments and the rise of consumer capitalism and consumerism.

Lower Extremity Joint Preservation: Techniques for Treating the Hip, Knee, and Ankle

by Mats Brittberg Konrad Slynarski

This book describes and discusses the available joint preservation techniques for maintaining the stability homeostasis of the lower extremity joints – specifically the hip, knee, and ankle – following injury. Readers will find detailed coverage of anatomy, pathology, techniques for repair, restoration, and regeneration, and rehabilitation strategies. Joint preservation is an emerging field in Orthopaedics that represents a response to the limitations of joint replacement technology. Using the techniques now available, surgeons can try to prevent or delay the onset of osteoarthritis or other degenerative conditions affecting the joints, particularly in young patients. Furthermore, modern tissue engineering offers the potential for whole-joint resurfacing, thereby achieving complete restoration. Optimal implementation of these techniques depends upon further refinement of methods and continuing improvements in knowledge of biomechanics, biology, and anatomy. Against this background, the present book is an ideal guide to the latest treatment modalities that will appeal to all who wish to learn more about indications, goals, procedures, and expected outcomes.

Lower League Football in Crisis: Issues of Organisation and Legitimacy in England and Germany (Football Research in an Enlarged Europe)

by Daniel Ziesche

While the field of football studies has produced an abundance of literature on professional, top-league football, there is little research output to do with the non-top level football. This book explores the relationship between the top and lower leagues, laying open the drastic schisms that exist between the different levels. The study links the developments at the top level of English and German football in the past 30 years to transformational processes in lower league football. Illustrating how the hegemonic status of top football weighs hard on the spheres below, it depicts how it also serves as a blueprint for lower league football clubs’ strategies in coping with a threefold dilemma of institutional legitimacy that shows itself in economic, cultural and social dimensions. Taking the different club structures in both national contexts as a starting point, it portrays both the efficacy of institutional frameworks and how these can be challenged from below. This research will be of interest to students and scholars across football studies, sports studies, the sociology of sport, and organisation studies.

Furthermore, the section on conservative treatment includes important practical application tools.

Lows, Highs and Balti Pies: Manchester City Ruined My Diet

by Steve Mingle

Lows, Highs and Balti Pies comprises vivid, colourful and highly individual recollections of City's most memorable games over the past 37 years. One hundred matches are featured, starting with a 5-2 drubbing of Sheffield United in 1967 and ending with the 4-1 triumph in the first derby at the cursed City of Manchester Stadium. Not all of the games in between provided quite as much pleasure. The book contains affectionate portraits of the City greats down the years, together with forthright appraisals on the rich assortment of blundering buffoons which the club has seen fit to inflict upon its famously loyal supporters. However, even when describing the club's darkest moments and the individuals responsible for them, humour is never far away - be it biting, dry, self-deprecating or just plain daft. This approach capture perfectly the essence of what it is to be a City fan. The book also embraces diverse elements of popular culture over the period. Musical reference points abound, whilst the likes of Sid Waddell, Curly Watts, Ian Hislop, Tony the Tiger and Cyanide Sid Cooper all somehow find themselves featuring in the story. And how the hell did Albert Pierrepoint get in there? All long-term followers of football causes will be well familiar with the emotional peaks and troughs described so strikingly in this book. Most, like the author, will have experienced more troughs than peaks. But it's the range of imaginative, often scarcely credible, ways in which City have brought both highs and lows into the lives of their fans which truly sets them apart. It's a remarkable story, vibrantly and entertainingly told.

From that moment, he terrorised Premier League defences, driving a resurgent Liverpool towards their most exciting top-flight season in 24 years. But there is another side to Luis Suárez: the naturally fiery temperament which drives his competitiveness on the pitch. There was the very public incident with Patrice Evra of bitter rivals Manchester United, and the biting of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic. Then during the World Cup finals in Brazil, in a physical encounter against Italy, he bit defender Giorgi Chiellini on the shoulder. Banned from football for four months, derided by the press, he was marched out of the country. In the summer's final twist, he became one of the most expensive footballers of all time, moving from Liverpool to Barcelona. In his first season at the Nou Camp he helped Barca to La Liga and Copa del Rey titles, scoring 16 goals in 27 games. In Crossing the Line, Luis Suárez talks from the heart about his intriguing career, his personal journey from scrapping street kid to performer on football's biggest stage, and the never-say-die attitude that sometimes causes him to overstep the mark.
