by Cathy SloanThis book examines performance practices that involve people in recovery from addiction, theorising such practices as recovery-engaged.Focusing on examples of practice from a growing movement of UK-based recovery arts practitioners and performers, it highlights a unique approach to performance that infuses an understanding of lived experiences of addiction and recovery with creative practice. It offers a philosophy of being in recovery that understands lived experience, and performance practice, as a dynamic system of interrelations with the human and nonhuman elements that make up the societal settings in which recovery communities struggle to exist. It thereby frames the process of recovery, and recovery-engaged performance, as an affective ecology – a system of messy connections. Building upon ideas from posthumanist research on addiction, cultural theory on identity and new materialist interpretations of performance practice, it considers how such contemporary theory might offer additional ways of thinking and doing arts practice with people affected by addiction. Inequality in Contemporary Stand-Up Comedy in the UK (Palgrave Studies in Comedy)

The research is based on interviews with comedians in the East Midlands; significantly, this demographic has been historically under-researched in studies of precarity, where the East Midlands is typically overlooked in discussions of arts funding and access in favour of a more simplistic north/south divide narrative. Similarly, whilst there has been increased discussion of the precarity of the creative and cultural industries, as well as media articles on the difficulty of breaking into comedy as a member of a marginalised group, there has been relatively little academic research to support this. While Friedman’s work in particular has been helpful for understanding the link between comedy producers, class and taste making, there has been less attention paid to the sociologies of work within comedy. This book fillsthese gaps in research by exploring the experiences of comedians in the East Midlands, contributing to the rich body of scholarship on inequality in the cultural industries and promoting a better understanding of the impact of structural inequalities and precarity on access to the cultural industries.

Dabei bewegt es sich im Spannungsfeld von Germanistik, Architekturgeschichte und Medienwissenschaft. Anhand von Radiohörspielen, Architekturzeitschriften und Filmen geht es der Frage nach, wie Architektur in Szene gesetzt wird. Dabei bezieht die Analyse mit ein, wie diese im Hinblick auf die Konstruktion und den Aufbau einer neuen Zukunft mit bestehenden Diskursen der Moderne in Verbindung gebracht wird und problematische Bezüge zur nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit aufweist. In Werken von Günter Eich (Träume, 1951), Otto Renner (BAU. Zeitschrift für wohnen, arbeiten, sich erholen, 1947) und mit einem anonymen Städtefilm (Stein auf Stein. Ein Land baut auf, 1949) werden wenig bekannte Kurzformen aufgegriffen, um deren Verknüpfung mit neuen Medienverbunden und soziopolitischen Diskursen zu erforschen. Die detaillierten Analysen - von Eichs „Fünftem Traum“ als Mediengeflecht von Text, Musik und Geräusch, der heute wenig bekannten, aber zu ihrer Zeit renommierten Architekturzeitschrift BAU als Medienverbund aus zirkulierenden und wiederaufbereiteten Fotografien, Zeichnungen, Texten und Typografie und dem Kurzfilm Stein auf Stein mit seinen intermedialen Bezügen u.a. zur Fotografie - stellen Querverbindungen zu vielen Figuren und Werken dieser Zeit her, in der die Architektur eine Neubewertung als vermittelnde Instanz zwischen Individuum und Gesellschaft erfährt.Davon ausgehend schließt die Autorin auf größere Problematiken, die die Öffentlichkeit in den frühen Nachkriegsjahren beschäftigten.
