Posthuman Pedagogies in Practice: Arts based Approaches for Developing Participatory Futures

by Annouchka Bayley

This book investigates transdisciplinary, arts-based approaches to developing innovative and pertinent higher education pedagogy. Introducing timely critical thinking strategies, the author addresses some of the key issues facing educators today in an increasingly complex digital, technological and ecological world. The author combines emerging ideas in the New Materialism and Posthumanism schools of thought with arts-based teaching and learning, including Practice-as-Research, for Social Science contexts, thus exploring how this approach can be used to productively create new pedagogical strategies. Drawing on a rich repertoire of real-life examples, the volume suggests transferrable routes into practice that are suitable for lecturers, researchers and students. This practical and innovative volume will appeal to researchers and practitioners interested in Posthuman and New Materialist theories, and how these can be applied to the educational landscape in future.

Diffracting New Materialisms: Emerging Methods in Artistic Research and Higher Education

by Annouchka Bayley Jj Chan

This edited book considers the vital position of artistic research in the landscapes and ecosystems of new materialism(s) and post-humanism(s), in and for higher education. The book aims to satisfy an urgent desire for change in the ways we link artistic and critical research practices, asking what new ways of thinking and creating for twenty-first century artistic and educational contexts we need in order to address the kinds of global complexities we face. Organised around five key themes including fictioning, reading, embodying, inhabiting and folding, the book acts as an entry point for academics, artists and scholar-practitioners to participate in the shaping of new forms of artistic research and practice that are relevant, participatory, and that urgently address the kinds of complex issues emergent in our twenty-first century context. In doing so, the book makes a key contribution to the development of emerging inter- and transdisciplinary artistic research practices across a range of fields, responding to the question - what kinds of research and practice worlds do we wish to create in times of urgency, crisis and complexity?

The Modular Housing Handbook

by Simon Bayliss Rory Bergin

Modular construction has the potential to improve housing quality, speed up delivery and reduce building costs – so why isn’t everyone doing it? This practical handbook combines real-world advice on designing modular housing with a compelling argument for off-site construction as a means for architects taking a greater role and achieving more influence in their housing projects. Focusing on the benefits as well as the challenges of modular construction, this book illustrates that off-site construction need not act as a design constraint and can in fact provide an opportunity for greater design impact. Richly illustrated with recent case studies and featuring over 100 photographs of exemplar projects, The Modular Housing Handbook provides inspiration as well as timely, practical advice.

Working with Actors: Meisner Technique for Directors and Actors

by Stephen Bayly

Working with Actors provides the key to unlocking the honest, dynamic performance every actor has within them. It offers a well-articulated formulation of the Meisner Technique easy for directors and actors to use within a working context.Through setting out an accessible training programme for practitioners working across stage and screen, this book establishes a clear-cut route to building a three-dimensional character in an organic, non-intellectual fashion, based squarely on the character's objectives.Few books in this field venture out of the training studio, while in this book - alongside offering an intense and concentrated Meisner training programme - the focus is more on the 'pay-off': the collaborative act of developing the role and how that plays out in rehearsal and performance.Beyond that, the books uniquely offers:> a new modality for script reading, analysis and rehearsal through which the character is born in relation to other characters;> a prioritisation of the key skills for coming alive in the moment – listening and putting one's attention wholly on the other character/actor;> a historical perspective on how Meisner's methods have evolved and why they provide the basis of truthful acting;> for directors, a format for analysis of the complete work based on Stanislavskian principles;> for actors, complementary methods, such as Uta Hagen's 'endowment', to enhance the 'reality of doing'

GHOSTS: The companion book to the BBC’s much loved television series

by Mat Baynton Simon Farnaby Martha Howe-Douglas Jim Howick Laurence Rickard Ben Willbond

The comic companion to the BBC sitcom GHOSTS, perfect for all the family.Everybody leaves a trace. The ghosts of Button House may have been dead a long time - some of them a very long time - but they have all left their mark on the world (even if, in Robin's case, that mark is just a handprint on the wall of a cave).Gathered together in this volume is a treasure trove of unearthed cuttings, original records and rare artefacts that explore the unseen lives of those who died at Button House: from Thomas's love letters to Pat's 'Summer Camp Rap', and from Julian's campaign promises to Lady Button's Rules of Etiquette. There are even documents dictated to the one person who can see and hear the ghosts: Alison Cooper.Written by the show's creators – Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond – this eclectic archive is a unique chance to discover more about the beloved ghosts of Button House. Thank be to Moonah!A book for all the family, it is as warm-spirited and deliriously daft as the series itself.

Mobility and Migration in Film and Moving Image Art: Cinema Beyond Europe (Routledge Advances in Film Studies)

by Nilgun Bayraktar

Mobility and Migration in Film and Moving Image Art explores cinematic and artistic representations of migration and mobility in Europe from the 1990s to today. Drawing on theories of migrant and diasporic cinema, moving-image art, and mobility studies, Bayraktar provides historically situated close readings of films, videos, and cinematic installations that concern migratory networks and infrastructures across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Probing the notion of Europe as a coherent entity and a borderless space, this interdisciplinary study investigates the ways in which European ideals of mobility and fluidity are deeply enmeshed with forced migration, illegalization, and xenophobia. With a specific focus on distinct forms of mobility such as labor migration, postcolonial migration, tourism, and refugee mobilities, Bayraktar studies the new counter-hegemonic imaginations invoked by the work of filmmakers such as Ayşe Polat, Fatih Akin, Michael Haneke, and Tony Gatlif as well as video essays and installations of artists such as Kutluğ Ataman, Ursula Biemann, Ergin Çavuşoğlu, Maria Iorio and Raphaël Cuomo. Challenging aesthetic as well as national, cultural, and political boundaries, the works central to this book envision Europe as a diverse, inclusive, and unfixed continent that is reimagined from many elsewheres well beyond its borders.

Tanzen/Teilen - Sharing/Dancing: Jahrbuch TanzForschung 2021 (TanzForschung #31)

by Sevi Bayraktar Mariama Diagne Yvonne Hardt Sabine Karoß Jutta Krauß

Progress in Pattern Recognition, Image Analysis, Computer Vision, and Applications: 14th Iberoamerican Conference on Pattern Recognition, CIARP 2009, Guadalajara, Jalisco, México, November 15-18, 2009. Proceedings (Lecture Notes in Computer Science #5856)

The 14th Iberoamerican Congress on Pattern Recognition (CIARP 2009, C- gresoIberoAmericanodeReconocimientodePatrones)formedthelatestofanow longseriesofsuccessfulmeetingsarrangedbytherapidlygrowingIberoamerican pattern recognition community. The conference was held in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico and organized by the Mexican Association for Computer Vision, Neural Computing and Robotics (MACVNR). It was sponsodred by MACVNR and ?ve other Iberoamerican PR societies. CIARP 2009 was like the previous conferences in the series supported by the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). CIARP 2009 attracted participants from all over the world presenting sta- of-the-artresearchon mathematical methods and computing techniques for p- tern recognition, computer vision, image and signal analysis, robot vision, and speech recognition, as well as on a wide range of their applications. This time the conference attracted participants from 23 countries,9 in Ibe- america, and 14 from other parts of the world. The total number of submitted papers was 187, and after a serious review process 108 papers were accepted, all of them with a scienti?c quality above overall mean rating. Sixty-four were selected as oral presentations and 44 as posters. Since 2008 the conference is almost single track, and therefore there was no real grading in quality between oral and poster papers. As an acknowledgment that CIARP has established itself as a high-quality conference, its proceedings appear in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series. Moreover, its visibility is further enhanced by a selection of a set of papers that will be published in a special issue of the journal Pattern Recognition Letters.

The Routledge Handbook of Collective Responsibility (Routledge Handbooks in Philosophy)

by Bazargan-Forward, Saba / Tollefsen, Deborah

The Routledge Handbook of Collective Responsibility comprehensively addresses questions about who is responsible and how blame or praise should be attributed when human agents act together. Such questions include: Do individuals share responsibility for the outcome or are individuals responsible only for their contribution to the act? Are individuals responsible for actions done by their group even when they don’t contribute to the outcome? Can a corporation or institution be held morally responsible apart from the responsibility of its members? The Handbook’s 35 chapters—all appearing here for the first time and written by an international team of experts—are organized into four parts:Part I: Foundations of Collective ResponsibilityPart II: Theoretical Issues in Collective ResponsibilityPart III: Domains of Collective ResponsibilityPart IV: Applied Issues in Collective ResponsibilityEach part begins with a short introduction that provides an overview of issues and debates within that area and a brief summary of its chapters. In addition, a comprehensive index allows readers to better navigate the entirety of the volume’s contents. The result is the first major work in the field that serves as an instructional aid for those in advanced undergraduate courses and graduate seminars, as well as a reference for scholars interested in learning more about collective responsibility.
