by Isabell DiekmannDieses Open-Access-Buch zeigt, dass feindliche Einstellungen gegenüber Muslim*innen oder als Muslim*innen markierten Menschen und gegenüber der Religion des Islams oftmals nur wenig differenziert betrachtet werden. Die mangelnde Trennschärfe zwischen Einstellungen gegenüber Menschen auf der einen und einer Religion auf der anderen Seite manifestiert sich etwa in Definitionen, in denen Islam und Muslim*innen in scheinbar untrennbarer Art und Weise zueinander konstruiert werden oder im Operationalisierungsprozess, wenn auf manifester Ebene Einstellungen gegenüber Muslim*innen erhoben werden, das Konstrukt jedoch als Islamfeindlichkeit bezeichnet wird. Diese Studie untersucht, (1) ob eine synonyme Verwendung der Begriffe gerechtfertigt ist oder ob sich empirisch nachweisen lässt, dass Islam- und Muslim*innenfeindlichkeit nicht identisch sind, (2) inwiefern Unterschiede im Ausmaß feindlicher Einstellungen gegenüber dem Islam und gegenüber Muslim*innen bestehen und (3) wie sich Deutungsrahmen der Befragten mit den Begriffen 'Islam' und 'Muslim*innen' voneinander unterscheiden. Die Zerlegung in seine Einzelteile ermöglicht es, das Phänomen in all seinen Dimensionen zu verstehen und wichtige theoretisch-konzeptionelle, methodologische und handlungspraktische Konsequenzen abzuleiten.

by Tobias DiemerIn den deutschen Schulsystemen sind in der jüngeren Vergangenheit verschiedene neue Steuerungsinstrumente eingeführt worden, mit denen die Erwartung eines Paradigmenwechsels einhergeht. Hierzu zählen auch jeweils bundeslandweite, zentrale Lernstandserhebungen, die in besonderer Weise auf die Steuerungsebenen der Einzelschule und der Unterrichtsgestaltung ausgerichtet sind. Tobias Diemer untersucht, wie die Ergebnisse solcher zentraler Lernstandserhebungen in Schulen genutzt und inwiefern wesentliche Prinzipien des neuen Steuerungsparadigmas realisiert werden. Eine zentrale Rolle spielt hierbei das Prinzip der Outputorientierung, das im theoretischen Teil einer eingehenden steuerungstheoretischen Reflexion anhand der systemtheoretischen Organisationstheorie Luhmanns sowie aktueller neoinstitutionalistischer Ansätze unterzogen wird. Auf der Grundlage zweier qualitativer Teilstudien mit insgesamt 99 Interviews und 27 Beobachtungen in 8 Schulen wird im zweiten Teil analysiert, wie sich dieses Prinzip bei der Nutzung zentraler Lernstandserhebungen in Schulen verwirklichen kann.

The book sets out to examine as yet unexhausted ways to boost the resilience of the principle of liberalism. Critically reviewing the last 200 years of the philosophy of freedom, it revises the principle of liberty in order to revive it. It discusses many different aspects that fall under its three main topics: the metaphysics of freedom, quantitative freedom and qualitative freedom. Open societies worldwide have come under increasing pressure in the last decades. The belief that politics and markets fare best when guided by the principle of liberty presently faces multiple challenges such as terrorism, climate warming, inequality, populism, and financial crises. In the view of its critics, the idea of freedom no longer offers adequate guidance to meet these challenges and should be partially corrected or even entirely replaced by countervailing values. Against the reduction of freedom to the merely quantitative question as to how much liberties individuals call their own, this book draws attention to the qualitative concerns which and whose opportunities society should foster. It argues that, correctly understood, the idea of liberty commits us to defend as well as advance the freedom of each and every world citizen.
Urban Sustainability through Smart Growth: Intercurrence, Planning, and Geographies of Regional Development across Greater Seattle (The Urban Book Series)

The book specifically explores Seattle within the wider space-economy and multi-scaled policy regime of the Puget Sound region as a whole, ‘jumping up’ from questions of city politics to concerns with what the book interprets as the “intercurrence” of city-regional “ordering." These theoretical terms capture the state-progressive effort to promote smarter forms of regional development but also the societal/institutional tensions and outright contradictions that such urban development invariably entails, particularly around problems of social equity. Key organizing themes in the text include: the historical path-dependencies of uneven economic and social development, particularly between Tacoma-Pierce County and Seattle-King County; current patterns of high-wage, medium-wage, and low-wage jobs; the emerging spatial and social structure of recent residential changes, especially with respect to class and race composition; and, finally, transit trends and new urban spaces associated with policy efforts to mitigate highway congestion and car-dependency. Greater Seattle, then, is mapped as a key US urban region inscribed spatially by the uneven search for a more sustainable order.
