Investigating Cultures of Equality (GRACE Project)

This volume explores the processes of investigating cultures of equality and sets out an epistemological framework for generating a more just and response-able knowledge. It offers a tapestry of inventive, self-reflexive, collective, and situated praxis of conducting politically informed research. Such efforts contest—or occasionally reinvent—the social and cultural worlds that we currently inhabit, in an attempt at building cultures of equality across different locations and contexts. The book engages with the idea of producing knowledge with others, indicating the political potential of scientific practice and offering a view of knowledge as a collective affective-intellectual effort. It provides an inventory of creative engagements with concepts and methodologies enabling production of socially responsible knowledges. Zunächst wird hier von zumeist japanischer Seite ganz einfach eine Darstellung der Gesellschafts­ struktur des modernen Japan gegeben, wobei der Akzent liegt auf der Periode von 1868, dem Jahr der Meiji-Restauration (die man mit Einschränkungen als "bürgerliche Revolution" japanischen Stils bezeichnen könnte), bis 1975. Es liegt auf der Hand, daß sich "Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft" nicht eindeutig trennen lassen, obwohl im Gegensatz zum Band I des Gesamtwerkes hier das Schwer­ gewicht ganz eindeutig auf soziologischem Gebiet liegt; und wenn schon von Gewerkschaften, Wirtschaftsverbänden und Betrieben gesprochen wird, so werden sie nicht primär als Organe der Wirtschaft, sondern in ihren Gruppenstrukturen und ihrer gesamtgesellschaftlichen Verflechtung, speziell auch im Hinblick auf integrative Funktionen, analysiert. It has simultaneously been a century of feminist creativity and struggle worldwide, witnessing fundamental changes in the conceptions and everyday practices of gender and sexuality. What are some of the connections between these two seemingly disparate characteristics of the past century? And how do collective memories figure into these connections? Exploring the ways in which wars and their memories are gendered, this book contributes to the feminist search for new words and new methods in understanding the intricacies of war and memory. African Migration to Thailand: Race, Mobility, and Integration (Routledge Series on Asian Migration)

Transnational Trajectories in East Asia: Nation, Citizenship, and Region (Asia's Transformations)

In recent decades, East Asia has become increasingly interconnected through trade, investment, migration, and popular culture at regional and global levels. At the same time, the region has seen renewed national assertiveness and nationalist impulses. The book interrogates these seemingly contradictory developments as they bear on the transformations of the nation and citizenship in East Asia. Conventionally, studies on East Asia juxtapose these developments, focusing on the much-exercised dichotomy of the national and transnational. In contrast, this book suggests a different orientation. First, it moves beyond the simplistic view that demarcates the transnational as "the West". Second, it does not view the national and transnational as distinct or contradictory spheres of influence and analysis, but rather, focuses on the interactions between the two, with a view on how these interactions work to transform the ideals and practices of the "good nation", "good society", and "good citizen". Legal Authority in Premodern Islam: Yahya B Sharaf Al-Nawawi in the Shafi'i School of Law (Culture and Civilization in the Middle East)

Offering a detailed analysis of the structure of authority in Islamic law, this book focuses on the figure of Yahyā b. Sharaf al-Nawawī, who is regarded as the chief contributor to the legal tradition known as the Shāfi'ī madhhab in traditional Muslim sources, named after Muhammad b. Idrīs al-Shāfi'ī (d. 204/820), the supposed founder of the school of law. Al-Nawawī’s legal authority is situated in a context where Muslims demanded to stabilize legal disposition that is consistent with the authority of the madhhab, since in premodern Islamic society, the ruling powers did not produce or promulgate law, as was the case in other, monarchic civilizations. Al-Nawawī’s place in the long-term formation of the madhhab is significant for many reasons but for one in particular: his effort in reconciling the two major interpretive communities among the Shāfi'ites, i.e., the tarīqas of the Iraqians and Khurasanians. This book revisits the history of the Shāfi'ī school in the pre-Nawawic era and explores its later development in the post-Nawawic period.
