Inference and Consciousness (Routledge Studies in Contemporary Philosophy)

by Timothy Chan Anders Nes

Inference has long been a central concern in epistemology, as an essential means by which we extend our knowledge and test our beliefs. Inference is also a key notion in influential psychological accounts of mental capacities, ranging from problem-solving to perception. Consciousness, on the other hand, has arguably been the defining interest of philosophy of mind over recent decades. Comparatively little attention, however, has been devoted to the significance of consciousness for the proper understanding of the nature and role of inference. It is commonly suggested that inference may be either conscious or unconscious. Yet how unified are these various supposed instances of inference? Does either enjoy explanatory priority in relation to the other? In what way, or ways, can an inference be conscious, or fail to be conscious, and how does this matter? This book brings together original essays from established scholars and emerging theorists that showcase how several current debates in epistemology, philosophy of psychology and philosophy of mind can benefit from more reflections on these and related questions about the significance of consciousness for inference.

by P M Chancellor

Discovered by Dr Edward Bach in the 1930s, the thirty-eight Bach Flower Remedies form a system of healing for the negative emotions and attitudes that may interfere with health and happiness. This book provides an in-depth and detailed description of each remedy, together with case histories relating to each one to help the reader appreciate how they may be put into practice. The descriptions and cases have been compiled from the Bach Remedy Newsletter, originally edited by Nora Weeks, Dr Bach's successor and close companion. In each issue she featured a remedy along with a collection of her own case notes, and because they represent such an authoritative text, Philip Chancellor, with her blessing, has compiled them to create this book.

Periphery: How Your Nervous System Predicts and Protects against Disease

by Moses V. Chao

A leading neuroscientist argues that the peripheral nervous system, long understood to play a key role in regulating basic bodily functions, also signals the onset of illness. The central nervous system, consisting of the brain and the spinal cord, has long been considered the command center of the body. Yet outside the central nervous system, an elaborate network of nerve cells and fibers extends throughout our bodies, transmitting messages between the brain and other organs. The peripheral nervous system, as it’s known, regulates such vital functions as heart rate, digestion, and perspiration and enables us to experience the barrage of sounds, tastes, smells, and other sensory information that surrounds us. But beyond these crucial roles, the peripheral nervous system might do even more: it might warn us of diseases in our future. As Moses Chao argues in Periphery, from Parkinson’s disease to autism to dementia, many neurological conditions emerge not in the brain but rather within the peripheral nervous system, in the dense network of nerves that wrap around the gastrointestinal tract. What’s more, dysfunctions of the peripheral nervous system can signal the onset of disease decades before symptoms like tremor or memory loss occur. Fortunately, unlike nerves in the brain and spinal cord, peripheral nerves can heal and regenerate in response to injury and aging. The therapeutic implications are remarkable. Chao shows how, with a better understanding of the peripheral nervous system, we could not only predict and treat neurological diseases long before their onset, but possibly prevent them altogether.Full of new ideas and bold interpretations of the latest data, Periphery opens exciting avenues for medical research while deepening our understanding of a crucial yet underappreciated biological system.

The Stone Cradle: One woman’s search for the truth beyond everyday reality

by Patrice Chaplin

In this gripping true-life memoir, Patrice Chaplin returns to the ancient city of secrets, Girona – its magnetism and enchantment never to be forgotten. It was in Girona that she first encountered the hidden Society, preserved since antiquity, that influenced such illustrious figures as Salvador Dali, Jean Cocteau, Otto Rahn and Howard Hughes – and even the cryptical priest of Rennes-le-Château, Bérenger Saunière. What mystery is protected by this esoteric society? In the spirit of her books The City of Secrets and The Portal, Patrice continues her search to solve the enigmas of Girona. When the Society appears to offer her its secret – on the basis that she becomes its custodian and remains in Catalonia – she is faced with a decision that will change her life forever. Sensing danger, she must anticipate the intentions of those around her. Knowledge is not only power, but also the best way to survive. Drawn into a series of adventures, she is taken to holy sites, isolated castles and ancient graves said to be linked to religious figures from the distant past. Finally, Patrice is led to a secret chapel in an isolated place: the domain of the Stone Cradle. Once touched, she is told, one would always return, even in dreams. This is a place of multidimensional reality, but also of peril – a portal to the unknown. What is its purpose? In The Stone Cradle, the culmination of her work, Patrice Chaplin discovers the secret of Girona and glimpses the truth beyond everyday reality.

I Want Love But… Realising the Power of You: Realising The Power Of You

by Paul Chaplin

Paul Chaplin has had an extraordinary life: multi-millionaire lawyer and published legal text books author; multi-award winning porn baron and actual porn star; made millions, and been through bankruptcy; former owner of Loaded magazine and Loaded TV; singer/songwriter/guitarist with his band Candyrock; owner of the Paul Raymond top-shelf magazines empire; writer, director and star of Netflix sitcom “Sexxx” and Netflix comedy sketch show “PC World”; lives a playboy lifestyle, with very public make ups and break ups. Now a qualified CBT Practitioner (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), Paul has brought his unique life experience to the writing of “I Want To Love But … Realising The Power of You.” Written in his easy to read style, Paul’s Book explains how being – really being – You, can get the love you want. So many people wish that their relationship to love could be better, and happier. As many people fear the impact of love on their lives and happiness. But few people really want to change, as the price of engaging with love. Yet, this is what self-help guides typically ask you to do. Paul’s approach is very different. The book shows how you can get the love you want, by being You and by committing to yourself. The good news is that you don’t need to change a thing about yourself. You can get the love you want, just by being yourself. How easy is that? It’s not about learning to love yourself: a common theme in self-help which is merely pursuing an illusion of love. It’s you who wants to love, not some fantasy person. We all experience WAFER: Walls, Anxieties, Fears, Energies and Reactions. “I Want To Love But…” urges you to preserve your WAFER, not crumble it. By being More you, not Less you. By becoming Bigger, not Smaller. By appreciating all the good and all the bad in you. By becoming better at simply being You.

Counselling and Psychotherapy with Older People in Care: A Support Guide

by Felicity Chapman

The global population is ageing rapidly yet there is a shortage of skilled professionals able to support the wellbeing of older people in care. Older people can be more vulnerable to mental health issues such as loneliness, anxiety, grief, loss, and cognitive changes, and need therapeutic support that addresses their specific needs and conditions. This supportive guide for psychotherapists, counsellors and other professionals working with older people, addresses the growing demand for mental health services for older adults. It covers a range of issues that arise within this demographic including residential living, the referral process, assessment and engagement, and attitudes towards ageing, while contextualising these issues within larger social and political frameworks. The author describes specific interventions such as Narrative Therapy, Reminiscence Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with practical case studies woven in throughout the book.
