Immune: How Your Body Defends and Protects You

by Mrs Catherine Carver

The human body is like an exceedingly well-fortified castle, defended by billions of soldiers – some live for less than a day, others remember battles for decades, but all are essential in protecting us from disease. This hidden army is our immune system, and without it we could not survive the eternal war between our microscopic enemies and ourselves.Immune explores the incredible arsenal that lives within us – how it knows what to attack and what to defend, and how it kills everything from the common cold virus to plague bacteria. We see what happens when the immune system turns on us, and how life is impossible without its protection. We learn how diseases try to evade the immune system and exploit its vulnerabilities, and we discover how scientists are designing new drugs to harness the power of the system to fight disease. Do transplants ever reject their new bodies? What is pus? How can your body make more antibodies than there are stars in our galaxy? Why is cancer so hard for our immune system to fight? Why do flu outbreaks cause a spike in sleep disorders? Can we smell someone else's immune system, and does that help us subconsciously decide who we fall in love with? In this book, Catherine Carver answers all of these compelling questions, and many more besides.Drawing on everything from ancient Egyptian medical texts to cutting-edge medical science, Immune will take you on an adventure packed with weird and wonderful revelations about your own internal defensive system.

Ethical Vegan: A Personal and Political Journey to Change the World

by Jordi Casamitjana

'Powerful and poignant.' Virginia McKenna OBE, Born FreeEthical veganism is not just a diet. Not just an opinion; nor a trend. This is a 21st-century revolution which began more than twenty centuries ago.Ethical veganism is not only about the food you choose to consume, it is a coherent philosophical belief that affects most areas of your life, and which could be the answer to today's global crises.Jordi Casamitjana is the vegan zoologist and animal protection campaigner whose landmark Employment Tribunal in 2020 made ethical veganism a protected belief in Great Britain. Ethical Vegan describes Jordi's extraordinary life and the animal encounters which led him to veganism and legal victory. It debunks myths and dispels preconceptions, offering a comprehensive analysis of veganism as a philosophy and as a socio-political transformative movement. Taking in history, science and everyday living, it explores how it is possible to dress ethically, travel, consume and work responsibly and, of course, eat well without compromising vegan ethics.Ethical Vegan is a riveting read - Jordi Casamitjana argues passionately for humans to interact with the world in a positive and compassionate way. This thought-provoking manifesto for doing no harm has the power to open people's minds and help to achieve a better future for all living things and the planet. As informative as it is incisive, as inspiring as it is inviting, this book will become one of the stand-out pieces of literature in the animal liberation movement. A must read whether you are vegan, vegetarian or otherwise!' Jay Brave

The Sailing Mind (Studies in Brain and Mind #19)

by Roberto Casati

This book scrutinizes the practice of sailing and its relation to philosophy of mind. Sailing brings about a peculiar human-artifact interaction which can lead to unexplored research paths. The idea behind this collection is that this interaction is better scrutinized by sailor scientists/philosophers to open up new possible pathways in research. Fascinating theoretical breakthroughs have been provided by observing sailing practices with the most well-known being Hutchins’ introduction in cognitive science of the concept of “distributed cognition.” However, in times past, sailing has both fueled philosophical metaphors, from Theseus’ ship to Plato’s image of the intellect as the boatperson of the soul, and inspired philosophers’ views (as happened to Herder during a stormy sea trip). The ecology of sailing is highly constrained: sailboats move at the surface between a compressible fluid and an uncompressible fluid. Wind originates in certain specific circumstances. Only certain sequences of actions are possible to take advantage of this ecology. The ontology of sailing is both of the boat and of the ocean/wind system. It highlights the fact that sailboats have been for centuries arguably the most complex technological artifacts in each culture that developed them, precisely because the environment they are engaging is so peculiar and demanding - almost the precise dual of Sapiens’ adaptive environment. This volume will appeal to philosophers of mind, cognitive psychologists, and marine professionals.

Advanced Remedial Massage

by Mel Cash

Remedial massage therapy uses manual therapy techniques to treat and 'remedy' a problem; but to offer a real remedy you must do more than just relieve pain; you must also understand how the problem came about and how it can be avoided in future. Advanced Remedial Massage places the emphasis on remedial therapy as well as massage, and will appeal to students of physiotherapy, oestotherapy and many other manual therapies. The book takes the reader through the practice of remedial massage, the effects and benefits that arise from it, a guide to the human muscular system, basic massage techniques and more detailed treatment practices. Illustrated with more than 200 full-colour photographs and over 50 diagrams, the techniques are easy to follow and understand. This informative guide is a must-have both for students of remedial massage and for professional therapists.

Sports And Remedial Massage Therapy

by Mel Cash

This is the definitive reference book on massage as a remedial therapy for sports training and sports injuries. It covers all practical and theroretical aspects of the subject, ranging from the basics through to the treatment of soft tissue injuries; and it gives guidance on how to work in a support role with medical practitioners treating more serious injury. It offers innovative new ideas like working posture and the psychology of injury treatment. This book goes beyond the conventional idea that massage is just a pleasant luxury, and shows it as a vital component in an athlete's training. The therapy offers effective pain relief for muscular problems, with practical advice on how to achieve permanant solutions to improve performance in sport.

Situated Cognition Research: Methodological Foundations (Studies in Brain and Mind #23)

by Mark-Oliver Casper Giuseppe Flavio Artese

This volume assembles supporters and critics of situated cognition research to evaluate the intricacies, prerequisites, possibilities, and scope of a 4E methodology. The contributions are divided into three categories. The first category entails papers dealing with a 4E methodology from the perspective of epistemology and philosophy of science. It discusses whether to support explanatory pluralism or explanatory unification and focuses on possible compromises between ecological psychology and enactivism. The second category addresses ontological questions regarding the synchronic and diachronic constitution of cognitive phenomena, the localization of cognitive processes, and the theoretical issue of mutual manipulability. The third category analyzes how the theoretical and practical commitments of 4E approaches lead to empirically supported investigations of different phenomena, such as research on affordances and (chronic) pain. The book renews attention to the possible adverse consequences coming along with methodical fragmentation, as found among 4E positions. It provides an overdue first step towards a systematic and positive answer to methodological concerns in situated cognition research. Without this and further steps in the future, the growth of 4E´s significance for the scientific study of the mind might stall or even decrease. With such steps, situated cognition research could realize its frequently highlighted but so far not comprehensively accessed potential to change radically the modalities of how cognitive phenomena are studied. This volume is of interest to scholars of the philosophy of mind.

The Eye Book: A Complete Guide to Eye Disorders and Health (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book)

by Gary H. Cassel Michael D. Billig Harry G. Randall

When all is well with our eyes, most of us take them for granted. But when our vision is blurred or our eyes are itchy and watery, it's hard to concentrate on anything but our eyes. In The Eye Book, three eye care specialists present a comprehensive reference to help readers care for their eyes and protect their vision, with special attention to changes and diseases that occur in the adult years. After detailing how the various parts of the eye work together so we can see, the authors review everything that can go wrong—from myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism to the major disorders of cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. They also thoroughly describe each part of the eye and the problems that can develop, from the irritation of itchy eyelids and conjunctivitis to emergency situations such as a detached retina. They describe the signs and symptoms of all these problems and how to deal with them, including when to apply a warm compress—and when to head to the emergency room. Medical and surgical treatment of both minor eye irritations and major diseases are explained in detail, so readers know where to turn and what to expect. The authors also tell readers what happens during an eye examination and how to recognize an eye emergency. They explain all about eyeglasses, including the various kinds of bifocals, and describe the care and maintenance of contact lenses in a way that makes wearing them a viable option for anyone who wishes to do so. They detail the special concerns of people with systemic diseases such as diabetes and indicate how common medications—from antibiotics and antidepressants to tamoxifen—affect the eyes. The pros and cons of refractive surgery are discussed, as are the special problems of people with low vision. An appendix lists medications used to treat eye conditions and the side effects of those medications. The book is fully illustrated with fifty-five line drawings and includes a symptoms index that will direct readers to sections of the book which describe the possible causes of the specific symptoms they are experiencing.

I needed to know what other women, in other cultures, in other times had done.Birth is a book that will open the eyes of even the most informed experts on the subject. Cassidy looks at every aspect of childbirth - from fathers and mothers to doctors and widwives across the centuries - with admirable objectivity in a work that is utterly gripping, occasionally shocking and essential reading for the human race.

Spells for Change: A Guide for Modern Witches

by Frankie Castanea

Modern day witches are a culmination of the old and new-they travel to the grocery store, work nine to fives, and teach in our classrooms. They carry black tourmaline and quartz, and wave bay and rosemary bundles over their doorways. Within an ancient sacred practice, a new generation of witches are rising; those who understand the power of action paired with energy and intent, who fight for the best versions of themselves through whispered chants and candlelight and match their activism with manifestation. The modern witch creates change within the hearth, the heart, and the world, one spell at a time.Frankie Castanea is at the centre of a thriving community of modern practitioners who use witchcraft to enrich their lives day-to-day and improve the world around them. In Spells for Change, Frankie demonstrates how witchcraft has both personal and worldwide applications, whether it's protecting the home or self from negative energies through boundaries and charms or binding a harmful person to help a friend. Each brings you closer to creating change within yourself, the environment around you, and the society we live in, and closer to a greater awareness of the Universe and the energies that exist within it.Including studies of meditation, grounding, manifestation, cleansing, protection, banishing and binding, this book will teach you how to enact personal and global change. From justice spells and banishing unwanted energy to spells to help you on the journey to self-love and self-prioritization, Frankie shows that, at its heart, witchcraft is a force for good that is ultimately about refining your identity and reclaiming your power.

A Theory of Tutelary Relationships

by Cristiano Castelfranchi

The purpose of the book is to propose and exploit an analytical, critical, well defined theory of a very crucial human social relation that I call “Tutelarity/ Tutelage”. This will thus explain how/why such relation is so relevant at any layer of sociality: from affective relationships, to social cooperation and interactions, to politics and democracy. The approach is theoretical and strongly grounded on cognitive science and the models of human mind: beliefs, desires, expectations, emotions, etc. Written in an accessible way, it will be of interest for a large audience, specifically to researchers and scientists interested in cognitive science and the dynamics of social relationships alike.
