Multispecies Discourse Analysis: The Nexus of Discourse and Practice in Sea Turtle Tourism and Conservation (Bloomsbury Advances in Ecolinguistics)

by Dr Gavin Lamb

This book explores how language and communication shape the increasingly entangled lives of people and sea turtles at the nexus of sea turtle conservation and ecotourism. Here, new ecocultural identities are taking shape as people strive to make sense of their shifting multispecies landscape, and as sea turtles gradually reclaim beaches after decades of absence. The book offers researchers in ecolinguistics and related ecologically engaged fields in discourse analysis an integrative theoretical and methodological approach to empirically investigate the human and 'more-than-human' discourses and practices shaping problematic human-wildlife interaction. Containing short vignettes in each chapter covering the biology and behaviours of sea turtles, this book suggests how discourse analysts might contribute to a 'life-sustaining multispecies ethics' in an uncertain socio-ecological time increasingly being referred to as the Anthropocene.

Understanding Media: Communication, Power and Social Change (Pelican Books)

by James Curran Joanna Redden

An authoritative and accessible guide to the world’s most influential force – the contemporary media Our lives are more mediated than ever before. Adults in economically advanced countries spend, on average, over eight hours per day interacting with the media. The news and entertainment industries are being transformed by the shift to digital platforms. But how much is really changing in terms of what shapes media content? What are the impacts on our public and imaginative life? And is the Internet a democratising tool of social protest, or of state and commercial manipulation?Drawing on decades of research to examine these and other questions, Understanding Media interrogates claims about the Internet, explores how representations in TV and film may influence perceptions of self, and traces overarching trends while attending to crucial local context, from the United States to China, Norway to Malaysia, and Brazil to Britain. Understanding Media is an accessible and essential guide to the world's most influential force - the contemporary media.

The Coffee-Table Book in the Post-War Anglophone World (New Directions in Book History)

by Christine Elliott

The Coffee-Table Book in the Post-War Anglophone World argues that coffee-table books appeared and became popular in the post-war era at the convergence of three important developments: advances in full colour printing technology, social change, and publishing entrepreneurism and innovation. Examining the coffee-table book through a book history lens acknowledges their significant contribution to post-war visual culture and illustrated publishing. Focussing on post-war America, Great Britain, and Australia during the “golden age” era of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, this history of the coffee-table book takes an interdisciplinary approach to put the coffee-table book in context in regards to materiality, format, printing, status, and genre.

Microwaves, Millimeter Wave and Terahertz Liquid Crystals: Preparation, Characterization and Applications (Modern Antenna)

by Anyong Qing Yizhe Zhao Zhiyong Zhang

This book is the first ever monograph on nematic liquid crystals for microwaves, millimeter waves and terahertz waves. It presents the first hand independent studies on nematic liquid crystals for microwaves, millimeter waves and terahertz waves. This book opens with an introduction to generic liquid crystals and a retrospective review about nematic liquid crystals in microwaves, millimeter waves and terahertz waves. Attention is then focused on the latest in-house progress on microwave, millimeter wave and terahertz nematic liquid crystals. Synthesis and characterization of novel nematic liquid crystals are first presented, followed by indigenous technologies to manufacture functional nematic liquid crystal devices for microwaves, millimeter waves and terahertz waves. A few self-developed representative advanced functional devices are shown to demonstrate the promising perspective of liquid crystals for not only microwaves, millimeter waves and terahertz waves but also many other non-display applications. The presented studies will attract scientists, engineers and students from various disciplines, such as materials, chemical, electrical, biological, and biomedical engineering. The book is intended for undergraduates, graduates, researchers, professionals and industrial practitioners who are interested in developing novel liquid crystals and further extending liquid crystals beyond display.

Transitivity In Translating: The Interdependence Of Texture And Context (pdf)

by Maria Calzada Pérez

This book proposes an overall framework of communication (including translation) that follows CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis)/CL (Critical Linguistics) principles; it devises an analytic tool for the study of transitivity in translation along Hallidayian-functionalist lines; and it incorporates a contrastive corpus of 52 speeches made before the European Parliament in English and Spanish on 9th March 1993 together with their corresponding translations. Both sentence and textual levels become units of analysis. Also, quantitative and qualitative methods are applied. The author analyses the various types of transitivity shifts at sentence level. She also shows that these shifts have contextual effects. Another focus of this study is to present how certain transitivity shifts group together.
