Nutritional Approaches To Aging Research

by Gairdner B. Moment Richard C. Adleman George S. Roth

The general plan of this volume, Nutritional Approaches to Aging Research is for each chapter to present first a reasonably succinct state-of-the-art appraisal of present knowledge in the particular field or problem covered. This will vary considerable depending on the subject matter. Following this, each chapter will focus on the problems and pitfalls, both conceptual and technological, of work in the particular field and, no less important, present some of the opportunities and implications of work in that particular area.

Advances in Clinical Nutrition: Proceedings of the 2nd International Symposium held in Bermuda, 16–20th May 1982

by I. D. A. Johnston

The advent of any new and effective therapy is soon followed by large numbers of publications in which the indications and benefits are explored critically. It is not unexpected, therefore, that within five years of the first Bermuda Symposium on advances in parenteral nutrition that a second Symposium was considered appropriate to review progress and explore new areas of investigation, as well as enlarging the scope of the meeting to include enteral nutrition. The rate of progress can be judged by the number of subjects which were not discussed at the first Symposium. For example, home parenteral nutrition, computer assisted assessment and prescribing, Studies of body protein synthesis and breakdown and the role of branched-chain amino acids are all new subjects for this Symposium which were not covered at all in the first meeting. Much progress has also been made to our understanding of the biochemi cal complications of parenteral nutrition and the problems related to long term access to the circulation. Nutritional care has become safer and more effective. There is an increasing awareness of the difficulties in making a true nutritional assessment in selecting patients for total parenteral nutrition and more attention has also been focussed on different approaches to enteral support in the management of undernourished patients. There is also continuing debate on the cost effectiveness of this expensive method of treatment and critics look in vain for evidence of efficacy based on controlled trials in specific groups of patients.

Total Parenteral Nutrition in the Hospital and at Home

by Khursheed N. Jeejeebhoy

It is therefore obvious that good patient management necessitates the use of an alternative route of nutritional support in patients unable to eat or absorb an oral diet. This alternative is parenteral nutrition, which is the subject of this book. While there are many texts on the subject of parenteral nutrition, very few if any are directed to the practical details of organizing the delivery of parenteral nutrition from a multidisciplinary point of view. In this publication we present the practice of parenteral nutrition as viewed by a team of a physician, nurse, and pharmacist.

The Eater's Guide to Chinese Characters

by James D. McCawley

Lauded by Calvin Trillin as a man who "does not have to make to with translations like 'Shredded Three Kinds' in Chinese restaurants," in The Eater's Guide to Chinese Characters, James D. McCawley offers everyone a guide to deciphering the mysteries of Chinese menus and the opportunity to enjoy new eating experiences. An accessible primer as well as a handy reference, this book shows how Chinese characters are written and referred to, both in script and in type. McCawley provides a guide to pronunciation and includes helpful exercises so users can practice ordering. His novel system of arranging the extensive glossary-which ranges from basics such as "rice" and "fish" to exotica like "Buddha Jumps Wall"-enables even the beginner to find characters quickly and surely. He also includes the nonstandard forms of characters that often turn up on menus. Food Security In The United States

by William B. Lacey Lawrence M. Busch

Despite the fact that every year it produces a larger surplus of agricultural products than any other country in the world, the U.S. still must contend with a number of important but often unaddressed issues related to food security, including problems of soil erosion, water supply, energy availability, nutrition; farm worker health and safety, and product distribution. This book; containing contributions from authorities in both the natural and social sciences, expands the range of issues pertinent to the security of the U.S. food system, taking into account the adequacy and sustainability of the food supply, equity in access to food by the entire population, the nutritional quality of food, and the costs and benefits (social, economic, and health) of the food system as it is presently organized. Each of the authors considers an aspect of U.S. food security from the point of view of a specific discipline, as well as in terms of broader policy implications.
