It develops a Modernist approach to nations and nationalism by incorporating Bourdieusian theories of symbolic capital and conflict, to examine how national identity has been constructed and represented in political symbols. Taking case studies of flags, monuments, national heroes, and street art, it critically analyses how a diverse population has interpreted and (re)constructed its national identity throughout the first decade of independence, and how the transition from a context of conflict to peace has influenced such popular imaginings. By examining these processes of identification with a wide range of symbols, the book discusses the numerous challenges that this young nation-state still faces, including victimhood and recognition, democratization and electoral politics, the political role of cosmology and spirituality, and post-colonial generational differences and divisions.

Supported by three and a half years of fieldwork since 1985, Nelson addresses these questions—along with the jokes, ambivalences, and structures of desire that surround them—in both concrete and theoretical terms. She explores the relations among Mayan cultural rights activists, ladino (nonindigenous) Guatemalans, the state as a site of struggle, and transnational forces including Nobel Peace Prizes, UN Conventions, neo-liberal economics, global TV, and gringo anthropologists. Along with indigenous claims and their effect on current attempts at reconstituting civilian authority after decades of military rule, Nelson investigates the notion of Quincentennial Guatemala, which has given focus to the overarching question of Mayan—and Guatemalan—identity. Sie bestätigen nicht den häufig postulierten Bedeutungsverlust des Pkw unter jungen Menschen, sondern zeigen, dass zwischen 1951-1960 Geborene im Vergleich zu allen anderen Altersgruppen im besonderen Maße autoorientiert sind. Entlang der Biographien werden, von älteren zu jüngeren Geburtsjahrgängen, eine Standardisierung und eine Homogenisierung von Mobilitätsbiografien bezüglich des Führerscheinerwerbs, der Autoverfügbarkeit und der Verkehrsmittelnutzung deutlich. Hinsichtlich der Pkw-Verfügbarkeit und Verkehrsmittelnutzung auf Berufswegen wird kein generationsübergreifender familiärer Zusammenhang nachgewiesen.

Doch die im sozialen Handeln zwischen Lebenden und Sterbenden entstehenden Lösungen sind nicht von Dauer. Manchmal können sie an individuelle Bedürfnisse angepasst werden. Nur selten überdauern sie den Moment. Im Suchen und Finden partieller Lösungen liegt die Aufgabe einer wissenssoziologischen Thanatologie, die deutlich machen will, dass es nicht nur eine, sondern mehrere und sogar unterschiedliche Todbedeutungen geben kann. Alltagspragmatisch zeigt sie, was hilft. Gesellschaftstheoretisch zeigt sie, wie es kommen musste, dass die Bedeutung des Todes sich wandelte.
Produktive Ambivalenz: Die soziale Herstellung von Selbsthilfe in der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit

Jüdische Religion in Deutschland: Säkularität, Traditionsbewahrung und Erneuerung

In der Beschneidungsdebatte 2012 wurde erstmals in der deutschen Nachkriegsgeschichte eine religiöse Praxis des Judentums öffentlich diskutiert. Unabhängig davon gibt es innerhalb des hiesigen Judentums schon länger vielfältige Diskussionen darüber, wie man die Religion in der Gegenwartsgesellschaft praktizieren soll.
