En Garde!: Swashbuckling Skirmish Wargames Rules (Osprey Wargames)

by Craig Woodfield Peter Dennis

En Garde! is a small-scale skirmish game based on the successful Ronin rules, in which small groups of warriors fight each other for honour or riches. Rather than just rolling a few dice, the rules allow players to make tactical decisions about how the models that they control will fight – offensively, defensively, or by applying special skills and abilities. En Garde! covers the conflicts of the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries, when black-powder weapons started to become common in battle but martial prowess still determined the outcome. Play as Border Reivers, Conquistadors, Landsknechts, Aztecs, French Musketeers, Caribbean Pirates and many more, in scenarios that evoke classic engagements of the genre. Simple campaign rules allow multiple scenarios to be played in sequence and permit warbands to develop over time. An appendix is also included to provide brief rules for supernatural creatures of the period – monsters, demons, revenants and witches – and new abilities and equipment to fight them, making En Garde! the perfect ruleset for gamers who want something a bit different from the norm.

Frostgrave: Sellsword (Frostgrave)

by Joseph A. McCullough

Sellsword is a digital-only mini-expansion for Frostgrave: Fantasy Wargames in the Frozen City. This expansion gives wizards the option to hire a captain, a special type of soldier, to help lead their warbands. Unlike other soldiers in the game, captains may choose their own weapons, have a few special abilities known as 'tricks of the trade', and gain experience. Of course, such experience and versatility comes at a price, so captains are going to want more than the retainer given to most soldiers – they want a cut of the treasure! Also included in this expansion are three new scenarios designed to give soldiers more of a chance to shine. All feature some type of limitation or obstacle to spellcasting that will force wizards to think a bit more about how much they rely on their magic.

Nazi Moonbase (Dark Osprey)

by Graeme Davis Darren Tan

In the dying days of World War II, Nazi Germany spent increasingly large amounts of its dwindling manufacturing capability on the construction of a small fleet of flying saucers capable of travel beyond the atmosphere. While these saucers were too few in number to affect the eventual outcome of the war, they did allow for a small, but fanatical Nazi group to escape Germany, first to Antarctica, and then on to the moon! For the first time, the history of the Nazi space program has been revealed - with a focus on the design, construction, and layout of the moonbase. Using detailed maps, the entire moonbase is reconstructed, noting the locations of various important features, such as weapon emplacements, the Vril generator, the air recyclers and water extractors. The book also covers the various attempt by the allies to overcome this last Nazi stronghold through both subterfuge and outright battle.

The Divine Madness of Philip K. Dick (Inner Lives)

by Kyle Arnold

Widely recognized as one of the most imaginative writers of the 20th century, Philip K. Dick helped to shape science fiction into the popular genre it is today. His stories, renowned for their sophisticated philosophical themes and startling portrayals of simulated realities, inspired numerous television and film adaptations, including the 1982 cult classic Blade Runner. Dick's personal life took on an otherwordly quality when, in 1974, he famously had a series of bizarre visions. According to Dick, a pink light beamed psychic information into his brain, awakening memories of a past life as an ancient Christian revolutionary and granting him contact with time-traveling extraterrestrials. He witnessed scenes from ancient Rome superimposed over his California neighborhood, and warned local police he was a dangerous machine programmed to self-destruct. After the visions faded, Philip K. Dick spent the rest of his life trying to fathom the meaning of what he called his "divine madness." Was it schizophrenia? Or a genuine religious experience? In The Divine Madness of Philip K. Dick, clinical psychologist Kyle Arnold probes the fascinating mystery of Dick's heart and mind, and shows readers how early traumas opened Dick to profound spiritual experiences while also predisposing him toward drug dependency and violence. Disputing the myth that Dick had schizophrenia, Arnold contends that Dick's well-known paranoia was caused by his addiction to speed. Despite Dick's paranoia, his divine madness was not a sign of mental illness, but a powerful spiritual experience conveyed in the images of science fiction.

Hadrian's Rage

by Patricia-Marie Budd

What if accepting yourself meant being rejected by everyone you knew? In the twenty-second century, the country of Hadrian struggles to be an example to the world while continuing its isolationist policy. It is a country where being homosexual is the norm and preferred sexual orientation, while heterosexuals are blamed for overpopulating the earth and destroying the environment. But despite genetic engineering of the population by Hadrian's scientists, there are still those who struggle with heterosexual feelings and when they act upon them, they are severely punished. Todd Middleton was one who broke Hadrian's law-and his best friend and lover Frank Hunter murdered him rather than see him experience further violent sexual reeducation attempts. Now Frank is sentenced to a lifetime of military service for his actions. Meanwhile, more heterosexuals are trying to stand up for themselves amid rage and intolerance. Straight men and women face discrimination, loss of jobs and livelihood, abandonment by friends, and even rape and murder at the hands of ignorant homosexual fanatics. But a small group of activists band together to combat the rage and hate that surrounds them. When they are joined by Hadrian's last surviving founder, and the star of a major national news program, things begin to fall apart for Hadrian's conservatives. But will those promoting the heterosexual agenda go too far, reversing what Hadrian has accomplished and causing it to break apart and descend into madness like the rest of the planet? Hadrian's Rage, a sequel to Hadrian's Lover, offers shocking surprises and answers that will make you rethink everything you thought was or should be normal. Praise for Hadrian's Rage Tyler Tichelaar, Superior Book Productions: "I thought Budd's previous book, Hadrian's Lover, a powerful and highly imaginative novel, but Budd has now superseded it. Hadrian's Rage leaves me in awe. I don't think anyone who reads this book will ever forget it, and hopefully, it will help to change the world, one heart at a time." International Praise for Hadrian's Lover Named Editor's Choice for September 2013 by So So Gay: "Beautiful, heart-wrenchingly poignant, and brilliantly conceived." - Jake Basford, So So Gay, London, England "Hadrian's Lover inspires internal debate and thought. As a text in a high school classroom it would do wonders and possibly change the world." - Drew Rowsome, My Gay Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Steampunk Soldiers: The American Frontier

by Philip Smith Joseph A. McCullough Mark Stacey

Even as the discovery and exploitation of hephaestium helped bring the Civil War to its close in 1869, the arms race it engendered resulted in a cold war just as bitter and violent as the open hostilities had been. With neither side willing to rely solely upon the talents of their scientific establishments, saboteurs, double-agents, and assassins found ample employment. Against this backdrop of suspicion and fear, thousands of Americans – Northerners and Southerners alike – headed west. Some to escape the legacies of the war, some to find their own land, some for the lure of that great undiscovered strike of hephaestium that would make them rich, and some simply to escape the law. Ahead of these pioneers stood the native tribes, behind them followed the forces of two governments, while to the north and south, foreign powers watched closely for their own opportunities. This newly unearthed collection of the works of Miles Vandercroft fills a considerable gap in our knowledge of the travels of that remarkable individual, and also provides a fascinating guide to the costume and equipment of the forces active in the great drive westwards.

Poseidon’s Warriors: Classical Naval Warfare 480–31 BC (Osprey Wargames)

by John Lambshead

Poseidon's Warriors is a set of wargaming rules for large-scale naval actions between fleets of Classical galleys from the Greek and Persian clash at the battle of Salamis to the battle of Actium that decided the fate of Rome. With so many of these battles taking place around islands or in narrow channels and shallow waters, sneaky tactics and cunning manoeuvres are a hallmark of warfare of this era, and the rules use an integrated turn system to allow a commander to position ships to go in and ram without being rammed in return, or to employ feints and traps to tempt the enemy out of position and leave his ships vulnerable to a follow-up strike. With data for ships throughout the period, rules for famous admirals, historical scenarios, a campaign system and a brief historical summary for those who wish to refresh their memory of the era, Poseidon's Warriors offers everything players need to bring to the tabletop the battles and campaigns of the first great age of naval warfare.
