Targeting Schools: Drill, Militarism and Imperialism

by Alan Penn

Militarism was inseparable from imperialism in Britain, as in other imperialist nations, and its proponents saw schools as ideal means by which to give the nation's youth an early introduction to military drill. This book traces the history of military drill for pupils in elementary schools from 1870-1914.

Targeting Investments in Children: Fighting Poverty When Resources Are Limited (National Bureau of Economic Research Conference Report)

by Phillip B. Levine David J. Zimmerman

A substantial number of American children experience poverty: about 17 percent of those under the age of eighteen meet the government’s definition, and the proportion is even greater within minority groups. Childhood poverty can have lifelong effects, resulting in poor educational, labor market, and physical and mental health outcomes for adults. These problems have long been recognized, and there are numerous programs designed to alleviate or even eliminate poverty; as these programs compete for scarce resources, it is important to develop a clear view of their impact as tools for poverty alleviation. Targeting Investments in Children tackles the problem of evaluating these programs by examining them using a common metric: their impact on earnings in adulthood. The volume’s contributors explore a variety of issues, such as the effect of interventions targeted at children of different ages, and study a range of programs, including child care, after-school care, and drug prevention. The results will be invaluable to educational leaders and researchers as well as policy makers.

Targeted Teaching: Strategies for Secondary Teaching (1st edition)

by Tremaine Baker

There is no single best approach in teaching. This new text challenges the idea that there is a 'best way' to teach. Instead, the authors explain, a more pragmatic approach is required. Teachers need a range of skills and strategies to select from, work with and adapt. Every school, cohort, class and child is different. Beyond that, strategies that worked well with a class last week, may prove ineffective the next. This book: presents a range of strategies, well grounded in research, for trainees and beginning teachers to use in their own classroom settings and contexts; presents a model of teaching that views teaching not as a profession in which there is always a single correct answer, but as a complex interaction between teacher and students; addresses common issues that beginning teachers face when developing their practice. If you are a teacher wanting to find out what works best for your class, in your school, right now, this text will show you how to harness the power of small or large scale research to help you find the answer. Target your Maths Year 5

by Stephen Pearce

The new Target Your Maths series has been written to fully support the renewed 2014 National Curriculum Framework. The structure as set out in Appendices II and III of the Answer Book enables teachers to develop concepts progressively throughout the year and provides pupils with frequent opportunities to consolidate previous learning. Each single or double page lesson in this book is divided into four sections: Introduction: the learning intention expressed as a target and, where necessary, clearly worked examples. Section A: activities based upon work previously covered. This generally matches the requirements for Year 4 pupils. This section can be used to remind children of work previously covered, as well as providing material for the less confident child. Section B: activities based upon the requirements for Year 5 pupils. Most children should be able to work successfully at this level. Section C: activities providing extension material for the faster workers and for those who need to be moved quickly onto more challenging tasks. The work in this section generally matches the requirements for Year 6 pupils. Problems in Section C can also provide useful material for discussion in the plenary session.
