Capillary phenomena occur in both natural and human-made systems, from equilibria in the presence of solids (grains, walls, metal wires) to multiphase flows in heterogeneous and fractured porous media. This book, composed of two volumes, develops fluid mechanics approaches for two immiscible fluids (water/air or water/oil) in the presence of solids (tubes, joints, grains, porous media). Their hydrodynamics are typically dominated by capillarity and viscous dissipation. This first volume presents the basic concepts and investigates two-phase equilibria, before analyzing two-phase hydrodynamics in discrete and/or statistical systems (tubular pores, planar joints). It then studies flows in heterogeneous and stratified porous media, such as soils and rocks, based on Darcy’s law. Energy Level Alignment and Electron Transport Through Metal/Organic Contacts: From Interfaces to Molecular Electronics (Springer Theses)

In recent years, ever more electronic devices have started to exploit the advantages of organic semiconductors. The work reported in this thesis focuses on analyzing theoretically the energy level alignment of different metal/organic interfaces, necessary to tailor devices with good performance. Traditional methods based on density functional theory (DFT), are not appropriate for analyzing them because they underestimate the organic energy gap and fail to correctly describe the van der Waals forces.Since the size of these systems prohibits the use of more accurate methods, corrections to those DFT drawbacks are desirable. In this work a combination of a standard DFT calculation with the inclusion of the charging energy (U) of the molecule, calculated from first principles, is presented. Regarding the dispersion forces, incorrect long range interaction is substituted by a van der Waals potential. With these corrections, the C60, benzene, pentacene, TTF and TCNQ/Au(111) interfaces are analyzed, both for single molecules and for a monolayer. The results validate the induced density of interface states model.

The general understanding of design is that it should lead to a manufacturable product. Neither the design nor the process of manufacturing is perfect. As a result, the product will be faulty, will require testing and fixing. Where does economics enter this scenario? Consider the cost of testing and fixing the product. If a manufactured product is grossly faulty, or too many of the products are faulty, the cost of testing and fixing will be high. Suppose we do not like that. We then ask what is the cause of the faulty product. There must be something wrong in the manufacturing process. We trace this cause and fix it. Suppose we fix all possible causes and have no defective products. We would have eliminated the need for testing. Unfortunately, things are not so perfect. There is a cost involved with finding and eliminating the causes of faults. We thus have two costs: the cost of testing and fixing (we will call it cost-1), and the cost of finding and eliminating causes of faults (call it cost-2). Both costs, in some way, are included in the overall cost of the product. If we try to eliminate cost-1, cost-2 goes up, and vice versa. An economic system of production will minimize the overall cost of the product. Economics of Electronic Design, Manufacture and Test is a collection of research contributions derived from the Second Workshop on Economics of Design, Manufacture and Test, written for inclusion in this book.

Computational Reality: Solving Nonlinear and Coupled Problems in Continuum Mechanics (Advanced Structured Materials #55)

This book presents the theory of continuum mechanics for mechanical, thermodynamical, and electrodynamical systems. It shows how to obtain governing equations and it applies them by computing the reality. It uses only open-source codes developed under the FEniCS project and includes codes for 20 engineering applications from mechanics, fluid dynamics, applied thermodynamics, and electromagnetism. Moreover, it derives and utilizes the constitutive equations including coupling terms, which allow to compute multiphysics problems by incorporating interactions between primitive variables, namely, motion, temperature, and electromagnetic fields. An engineering system is described by the primitive variables satisfying field equations that are partial differential equations in space and time. The field equations are mostly coupled and nonlinear, in other words, difficult to solve. In order to solve the coupled, nonlinear system of partial differential equations, the book uses a novel collection of open-source packages developed under the FEniCS project. All primitive variables are solved at once in a fully coupled fashion by using finite difference method in time and finite element method in space.
