Animal Physiologic Surgery
by Carol Max LangThis second edition of Animal Physiologic Surgery presents an integrated introduction to surgery for students in all of the health sciences. As with the first, this edition introduces the novice to surgery using the animal model, and emphasizes the relation of surgery to physiologic function. The book begins with a practical introduction to sterile technique and instrumentation, then develops the student's familiarity with basic surgical skills, and progresses to procedures requiring some proficiency and inter pretation. While all of the procedures involve a degree of complexity, our experience has shown that beginning students are capable of handling these exercises as we have presented them. We have expanded and revised the section covering surgical technique in response to the many useful and encouraging comments we received on the first edition. In addition, the section on clinical procedures and laboratory techniques has been reorgan ized to include a chapter on emergency and resuscitative procedures. By emphasizing the physiologic responses to disease states and to surgical intervention, we not only convey an understanding of surgery's potential and limitations, but also point out the student's responsibility for providing the best possible pre-, intra-, and postoperative care. The section on laboratory procedures is designed to provide further insight into the body's physiology in a clinical context. It broadens the traditional focus of animal rights beyond basic rights to life and bodily integrity to rights to the natural areas in which animal reside. Using the concept of guardianship for cognitively impaired human beings, Hadley translates habitat rights as a right to negotiate - human guardians ought to be allowed to negotiate, on behalf of wild animals, with human landholders whose development activities put animals at risk. Animal Psychophysics: the design and conduct of sensory experiments

StebbinsIn May of 1969, the contributors to this book gathered at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for three days to talk about their work in the behavioral analysis of animal sensory function and to share their research experiences in the laboratory with particular emphasis on methodology in behavioral training, testing, and instrumentation. It was their feeling and mine as a consequence of this meeting that we had sufficient substance to justify a book which we hoped would be of interest and even of pragmatic value to any biologic or biomedical scientist whose work deals with sensory function. Clearly, there is no aspect of an organism's behavior that is not to some extent con trolled by environmental stimuli. In recent years, due in large part to technical advances in microscopy and histology and in electrophysiology, there have been several extremely informative published proceedings from conferences and symposia concerned with some of the early and very basic stages in the reception of environmental energy by the sense organs and its processing by the nervous system. Transduction at the receptor and stimulus coding by the nervous system, cell membrane changes, and the basic structure of the receptor and related tissue as seen through the electron and phase contrast microscope have received major attention, and exciting new discoveries in sen sory function and structure have been reported. Ultimately, such discoveries must be related to an intact behaving organism.

She considers the main proposals of reform that recently have been advanced within the framework of today's prevailing ethical perspectives. Are these proposals satisfying? Cavalieri says no, claiming that it is necessary to go beyond the traditional opposition between utilitarianism and Kantianism and focus on the question of fundamental moral protection. In the case of human beings, such protection is granted within the widely shared moral doctrine of universal human rights' theory. Cavalieri argues that if we examine closely this theory, we will discover that its very logic extends to nonhuman animals as beings who are owed basic moral and legal rights and that, as a result, human rights are not human after all.

Animal Sonar Systems (Nato ASI Subseries A: #28)
by R. BusnelThirteen years have gone by since the first international meet ing on Animal Sonar Systems was held in Frascati, Italy, in 1966. Since that time, almost 900 papers have been published on its theme. The first symposium was vital as it was the starting point for new research lines whose goal was to design and develop technological systems with properties approaching optimal biological systems. There have been highly significant developments since then in all domains related to biological sonar systems and in their appli cations to the engineering field. The time had therefore come for a multidisciplinary integration of the information gathered, not only on the evolution of systems used in animal echolocation, but on systems theory, behavior and neurobiology, signal-to-noise ratio, masking, signal processing, and measures observed in certain species against animal sonar systems. Modern electronics technology and systems theory which have been developed only since 1974 now allow designing sophisticated sonar and radar systems applying principles derived from biological systems. At the time of the Frascati meeting, integrated circuits and technol ogies exploiting computer science were not well enough developed to yield advantages now possible through use of real-time analysis, leading to, among other things, a definition of target temporal char acteristics, as biological sonar systems are able to do. All of these new technical developments necessitate close co operation between engineers and biologists within the framework of new experiments which have been designed, particularly in the past five years.
