Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection: Epidemiology, Diagnosis, Therapy

by Gabriele Baumann

Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the most common intrauterine transmitted viral infection, with a tremendous impact on fetuses and newborns. In this book the history of this disease, its pathophysiological background, epidemiology and symptoms, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, will be discussed. Since economic aspects are gaining more and more importance in health politics, one chapter is dedicated to this issue in the context of congenital CMV infection. The content is based on the latest scientific findings and written in an understandable manner, allowing persons not working in the field of congenital CMV to also profit from it. Thus, this book is of interest for medical doctors, nurses, midwives, economists, but also for men and women who want to inform themselves about this topic.

The Multicultural Riddle: Rethinking National, Ethnic and Religious Identities

by Gerd Baumann

Multicultural Riddle is a comprehensive exploration of all the issues that shape our search for a multicultural society. The book examines how we can establish a state of justice and equality between and among three groups: those who believe in a unified national culture, those who trace their culture to their ethnic identity, and those who view their religion as their culture. To solve the multicultural riddle, one must rethink national identity, ethnicity and the role of religion in the modern world.

New Sinc Methods of Numerical Analysis: Festschrift in Honor of Frank Stenger's 80th Birthday (Trends in Mathematics)

by Gerd Baumann

This contributed volume honors the 80th birthday of Frank Stenger who established new Sinc methods in numerical analysis. The contributions, written independently from each other, show the new developments in numerical analysis in connection with Sinc methods and approximations of solutions for differential equations, boundary value problems, integral equations, integrals, linear transforms, eigenvalue problems, polynomial approximations, computations on polyhedra, and many applications. The approximation methods are exponentially converging compared with standard methods and save resources in computation. They are applicable in many fields of science including mathematics, physics, and engineering. The ideas discussed serve as a starting point in many different directions in numerical analysis research and applications which will lead to new and unprecedented results. This book will appeal to a wide readership, from students to specialized experts.

Symmetry Analysis of Differential Equations with Mathematica®

by Gerd Baumann

The first book to explicitly use Mathematica so as to allow researchers and students to more easily compute and solve almost any kind of differential equation using Lie's theory. Previously time-consuming and cumbersome calculations are now much more easily and quickly performed using the Mathematica computer algebra software. The material in this book, and on the accompanying CD-ROM, will be of interest to a broad group of scientists, mathematicians and engineers involved in dealing with symmetry analysis of differential equations. Each section of the book starts with a theoretical discussion of the material, then shows the application in connection with Mathematica. The cross-platform CD-ROM contains Mathematica (version 3.0) notebooks which allow users to directly interact with the code presented within the book. In addition, the author's proprietary "MathLie" software is included, so users can readily learn to use this powerful tool in regard to performing algebraic computations.

Civil Enculturation: Nation-State, School and Ethnic Difference in The Netherlands, Britain, Germany, and France

by Gerd Baumann Riva Kastoryano Steven Vertovec Werner Schiffauer

For several years now, the concepts of 'civil culture' and 'civil society' have been widely discussed in the social sciences. Theoretically innovative and empirically rich, this volume is one of few studies that offer solid and focused ethnographic research on how the tenets and assumptions of civil culture are inculcated in schools. The authors examined school curricula, texts and pedagogical practices, observed daily interaction within the schools and outside, and conducted numerous interviews and discussion groups. The experience of students from Turkish backgrounds in the four countries was given special attention, thus offering valuable insights into the changing dynamics of nation-state civil cultures in multicultural societies.

Urban Insect Pests: Sustainable Management Strategies

by Gregory Baumann Zia Siddiqi Ed Vargo Rajeev Vaidyanathan Julian Entwestle John Cooksey Chow Lee Michael Rust Changlu Wang Frantisek Rettich David Liszka Eli Shaava

A companion to 'Urban Pest Management', this book builds on the issues of insect pests in urban settings to discuss control strategies that look beyond products. From an environmental and health perspective, it is not always practical to spray chemicals indoors or in urban settings, so this work discusses sustainable control and best practice methods for managing insects that are vectors of disease, nuisance pests and the cause of structural damage.

Berliner Kommentar zum Versicherungsvertragsgesetz: Kommentar zum deutschen und österreichischen VVG

by H. Baumann R. Beckmann R. Dallmayr H. Dörner M. Gruber F. Harrer K. Hohlfeld T. Honsell M. Hübsch A. Riedler W. H. Roth M. Schauer H. P. Schwintowski A. Staudinger W. Voit

Citizen Hariri: Lebanon's Neo-liberal Reconstruction

by Hannes Baumann

Rafiq Hariri was Lebanon's Silvio Berlusconi: a 'self-made' billionaire who became prime minister and shaped postwar reconstruction. His assassination in February 2005 almost tipped the country into civil strife. Yet Hariri was neither a militia leader nor from a traditional political family. How did this outsider rise to wield such immense political and economic power? Citizen Hariri shows how the billionaire converted his wealth and close ties to the Saudi monarchy into political power. Hariri is used as a prism to examine how changes in global neoliberalism reshaped Lebanese politics. He initiated urban megaprojects and inflated the banking sector. And having grown rich as a contractor in the Gulf, he turned Lebanon into an outlet for Gulf capital. The concentration of wealth and the restructuring of the postwar Lebanese state were comparable to the effects of neoliberalism elsewhere. But at the same time, Hariri was a deeply Lebanese figure. He had to fend against militia leaders and a hostile Syrian regime. The billionaire outsider eventually came to behave like a traditional Lebanese political patron. Hannes Baumann assesses not only the personal legacy of the man dubbed 'Mr Lebanon' but charts the wider social and economic transformations his rise represented.

UML 2.0 in Action: A Project-based Tutorial

by Henriette Baumann Patrick Grassle Philippe Baumann

The book is uniquely practical. A richly textured case study is used throughout the book. Although some aspects of the Airport Passenger Services business process are simplified for sake of clarity and efficiency, it provides a comprehensive practical grounding for theoretical UML knowledge. The case study itself was developed in partnership with employees of Zurich Airport. The book was written for business analysts, technical architects and developers. It does not require detailed programming knowledge, nor is prior experience of UML mandatory. It shows how, with UML, simple models of business processes and specification models can be created and read with little effort.

Kulturenorientierte Bildung: Grundlagen für den Umgang mit Interkulturalität in der Schule

by Ina Baumann

The Plight of Older Workers: Labor Market Experience after Plant Closure in the Swiss Manufacturing Sector (Life Course Research and Social Policies #5)

by Isabel Baumann

This open access book examines the economic, social, and psychological consequences of manufacturing plant closure at the individual level. Using an original data set of over 1,200 workers from Switzerland who lost their manufacturing jobs after the financial crisis of 2008, the author analyzes the determinants of reemployment, the sector of reemployment, and the change in wages over a two year period. In addition, coverage also explores how plant closure affects the social relationship between a displaced worker and his or her significant other, which includes a discussion of the coping strategies on the household level as well as how changes in a worker's social and occupational life affects overall satisfaction. Readers will discover that the burden of structural change disproportionately falls on the shoulders of workers aged 55 and older who often face substantial barriers when trying to return to employment. A larger portion of this group experience long-term unemployment and those who do manage to find a new job often suffer disproportionate wage loss. This result is intriguing in the context of the current demographic change and contradicts the common assumption that young and low-qualified individuals are at greatest risk of unemployment. Advanced age—and not low education—appears to be the primary obstacle to workers finding job satisfaction after being laid off because of market conditions.

Joint Preserving Procedures of the Lower Extremity (Progress in Orthopaedic Surgery #4)

by J. U. Baumann H. Judet J. Judet P. Maquet R. Schneider A. Schreiber K. Schürmann H. Wagner

The fourth volume of Progress in Orthopaedic Surgery is somewhat different from pre vious publications of the series. The editors have again tried to present two topics but the publications presented from the European literature are of very recent origin. In the age of total joint replacement it was felt to be imperative to counteract the pre sent tendency to treat every joint which does not seem to be healthy with an artificial re placement. Orthopaedic surgery seems to be influenced by trends. In 1963, E. A. Nichol discussing intracapsular hip fractures, quoted from Alice In Wonderland in an editorial written for volume 45B of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery "The Queen had only one way of settling all difficulties, great or small, "Off with his head"!". Today one could paraphrase his implied critizism by saying "Out with the joint". No one doubts that joint replacements have been of great value in treating degenerative joint changes, but it is already apparent that replacement operations are not the ultimate answer for treating every joint deformity. This volume represents the European experience of different types of surgery in treat ing arthrosis of the joints of the lower limb. A reader of the Anglo-American literature will find suggestions in it which reaffirm his uneasiness in considering only one solution for problems concerning lower limb joints. I feel strongly that there are other ways which allow a patient to function well with less extensive operations.

Mobile Agents: Control Algorithms (Lecture Notes in Computer Science #1658)

by Joachim Baumann

In this monograph, Joachim Baumann provides in-depth coverage of essential research issues; namely, mechanisms for locating and terminating mobile agents and for orphan detection in a mobile agent system. The reader will gain insights into the design and implementation of three control mechanisms for use in mobile agent systems: the energy concept, the path concept, and the shadow concept. The author examines these mechanisms and offers a solid argument as to why they would be better choices over existing mechanisms with respect to message complexity, migration delay, and availability. All in all, this book is an outstanding contribution to advancing the science of mobile agents and it will help the community better understand how to tame mobile agents.
