Darby O'Gill and the Good People: Herminie Templeton Kavanagh. Stories selected and edited by Brian McManus

by Brian McManus

The original Herminie Templeton Kavanagh stories that are included in this book all have proto-feminist theme. Also, the introduction details Kavanagh's extraordinary achievements as a woman working and living at the turn of the twentieth century. Even though Darby O' Gill & The Good People is a children's book, the paragraphs are more written for adults, perhaps the parents who might buy the book for their children because they appreciate the proto-feminist theme. The representation of female characters in children's books from the past and their suitability in our modern age of equality is an ongoing discussion.
