Japanese Population Geographies II: Minority Populations and Future Prospects (SpringerBriefs in Population Studies)

This is the first anthology that conveys in detail the actual situation of population geographies in Japan, a country facing some of the world's most serious demographic trends such as low fertility, population aging, and depopulation. The anthology consists of two volumes with the common title Japanese Population Geographies. All of the included entries are based on original Japanese papers written by leading geographers and published within the past few years, useful for understanding Japan’s current population geographies. The first volume analyzes the postwar transition of internal migration, examining the structural changes of population in urban areas, and proposes a new measure different from the traditional resident population. This volume also presents an investigation of the retirement migration of baby boomers as well as displacement migration due to the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The second volume’s contents examine the residential choices of minority populations such as foreign residents and sexual minorities. It also discusses future prospects associated with mono-polar concentration into Tokyo, regional forecasting using population projections based on small-area units, and the importance of a politico–economic perspective in future research. Taken as a whole, this anthology offers the following two significant contributions. First, the excellent achievements obtained in Japan, which is experiencing serious demographic trends, reflect key developments within the context of the world's population geography. The second contribution is that the publication brings the latest insights and important policy implications to countries that are facing various issues associated with decreasing fertility, aging population, and declining population.

Dynamical Phase Transitions in Chaotic Systems (Nonlinear Physical Science)

This book discusses some scaling properties and characterizes two-phase transitions for chaotic dynamics in nonlinear systems described by mappings. The chaotic dynamics is determined by the unpredictability of the time evolution of two very close initial conditions in the phase space. It yields in an exponential divergence from each other as time passes. The chaotic diffusion is investigated, leading to a scaling invariance, a characteristic of a continuous phase transition. Two different types of transitions are considered in the book. One of them considers a transition from integrability to non-integrability observed in a two-dimensional, nonlinear, and area-preserving mapping, hence a conservative dynamics, in the variables action and angle. The other transition considers too the dynamics given by the use of nonlinear mappings and describes a suppression of the unlimited chaotic diffusion for a dissipative standard mapping and an equivalent transition in the suppression of Fermi acceleration in time-dependent billiards. This book allows the readers to understand some of the applicability of scaling theory to phase transitions and other critical dynamics commonly observed in nonlinear systems. That includes a transition from integrability to non-integrability and a transition from limited to unlimited diffusion, and that may also be applied to diffusion in energy, hence in Fermi acceleration. The latter is a hot topic investigated in billiard dynamics that led to many important publications in the last few years. It is a good reference book for senior- or graduate-level students or researchers in dynamical systems and control engineering, mathematics, physics, mechanical and electrical engineering.

This book describes a novel method for mortality modeling applying the shifting feature of the mortality curve. In Japan, the increase and pace of the extension in life expectancy have been quite remarkable. Therefore, existing mortality models often cannot capture the peculiarities of Japanese mortality, nor can the Lee–Carter model, which is now regarded internationally as a standard model. One of the important concepts to model recent Japanese mortality is a shifting feature. In this book, the linear difference model, which has many advantages for modeling and analyzing Japanese mortality, is introduced. The book shows applications of the model to mortality projection with a tangent vector field approach and decomposition of the change of modal age at death. The models introduced here are useful tools for modeling mortality with strong shifting features, as in Japan.

Shuffle Approach Towards Quantum Affine and Toroidal Algebras (SpringerBriefs in Mathematical Physics #49)

This book is based on the author's mini course delivered at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology in March 2019. The shuffle approach to Drinfeld–Jimbo quantum groups of finite type (embedding their "positive" subalgebras into q-deformed shuffle algebras) was first developed independently in the 1990s by J. Green, M. Rosso, and P. Schauenburg. Motivated by similar ideas, B. Feigin and A. Odesskii proposed a shuffle approach to elliptic quantum groups around the same time. The shuffle algebras in the present book can be viewed as trigonometric degenerations of the Feigin–Odesskii elliptic shuffle algebras. They provide combinatorial models for the "positive" subalgebras of quantum affine algebras in their loop realizations. These algebras appeared first in that context in the work of B. Enriquez.Over the last decade, the shuffle approach has been applied to various problems in combinatorics (combinatorics of Macdonald polynomials and Dyck paths, generalization to wreath Macdonald polynomials and operators), geometric representation theory (especially the study of quantum algebras’ actions on the equivariant K-theories of various moduli spaces such as affine Laumon spaces, Nakajima quiver varieties, nested Hilbert schemes), and mathematical physics (the Bethe ansatz, quantum Q-systems, and quantized Coulomb branches of quiver gauge theories, to name just a few).While this area is still under active investigation, the present book focuses on quantum affine/toroidal algebras of type A and their shuffle realization, which have already illustrated a broad spectrum of techniques. The basic results and structures discussed in the book are of crucial importance for studying intrinsic properties of quantum affinized algebras and are instrumental to the aforementioned applications.

Deriving Priorities from Incomplete Fuzzy Reciprocal Preference Relations: Theories and Methodologies

As we know, multiplicative preference relations (or called pairwise comparisons in AHP) were proposed by Dr. Thomas L Saaty. One important work is to derive its priority from pairwise comparisons. It has been proposed many methods to derive priority for multiplicative preference relation. On the basis of fuzzy sets, the fuzzy reciprocal preference relation is proposed and is extended to the incomplete contexts. However, how to derive the priorities from incomplete fuzzy reciprocal preference relations is an interesting and challenging work. This book systematically presents the theories and methodologies for deriving priorities from incomplete fuzzy reciprocal preference relations. This book can be divided into three parts. In the first part, this book introduces the basic concepts of fuzzy reciprocal preference relations and incomplete fuzzy reciprocal preference relations. Then, two consistencies of complete fuzzy reciprocal preference relations are introduced: additive consistency and multiplicative consistency. Then, the relationships between the fuzzy reciprocal elements and the weights are showed. Afterward, in the second part, different priority methods are presented. The inconsistency repairing procedures are also proposed. Last, the priority method for incomplete hesitant fuzzy reciprocal preference relations is presented. This book can be used as a reference for researchers in the areas of management science, information science, systems engineering, operations research, and other relevant fields. It can also be employed as a textbook for upper-level undergraduate students and graduate students.
