Album For The Young: Op. 39; 24 Easy Pieces (PDF)
by Pyotr Il'Yich Tchaikovsky A. RuthardtAlbum For The Young
Mozart
by Sir Sacheverell SitwellA concise and beautifully evocative appreciation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s career and genius by the famed writer and poet Sacheverell Sitwell. From Mozart’s first precocious attempts at composing at the age of four or five, through to his tragic death at the age of just 35, Sitwell traces this most famous of composers’ life with depth and humanity. Exploring Mozart's genius in minute and effusive detail, he expounds on everything from The Marriage of Figaro to the Requiem in beautiful prose.Sitwell’s friendships with the great composers and musicians of the early twentieth century - and his innate understanding of the physical and social settings that Mozart composed for - make this a truly unique biography that is yet to be superseded.
Revival: Beethoven (Routledge Revivals)
by Harvey GraceThe original intention was that this book should be entirely biographical. If it be true, however, that out main interest is (or ought to be) in what a composer did rather than in what he was, the truth applies especially to Beethoven, and above all at the present time. The scheme of the book has therefore been modified so as to include a survey of his work. An attempt to make such survey cover the whole of Beethoven’s output would result in little more than a catalogue, with annotations to brief as to convey hardly anything of the essential quality of the music. It seemed, therefore, that the limited space would be best used, and the needs of the general reader more fully met, by a much less rigid and comprehensive method. My aim has been to indicate some, at least, of the more important characteristics of Beethoven’s works, and to show their influence on his successors.

Liszt
by Sir Sacheverell SitwellIn this classic work on music biography, Sacheverell Sitwell narrates Franz Liszt’s rapid ascent to European fame - and the effect that this incredible early success as a wonderfully gifted pianist had on his later life - with insight, sympathy and humanity, One of the very first studies of Liszt to be published in English, this remarkable biography uses the full force of Sitwell's poetic talent to bring this brilliant and difficult man’s world vividly to life, and captures the artistic mood of the era in extraordinary detail.Perceptive, engaging and full of personality, Liszt rightfully takes its place as one of the most important accounts of its subject's life.
Rachmaninoff's Recollections (Routledge Revivals)
by Oskar von RiesemannThis book, first published in 1934, contains the recollections of the varied and coloured life of a great pianist and composer, who is one of the most striking figures of the musical world. Rachmaninoff dictated his memoires to the author of this book, and much of the story is therefore told in the first person. The final chapter is Riesemann’s own contribution. It is an estimate of Rachmaninoff’s qualities as composer; it shows knowledge of all his more important works; and it shows discrimination. The whole book is an authoritative and interesting study of a popular artist.

Benny Goodman's Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert (Oxford Studies in Recorded Jazz)
by Catherine TackleyOn January 16, 1938 Benny Goodman brought his swing orchestra to America's venerated home of European classical music, Carnegie Hall. The resulting concert - widely considered one of the most significant events in American music history - helped to usher jazz and swing music into the American cultural mainstream. This reputation has been perpetuated by Columbia Records' 1950 release of the concert on LP. Now, in Benny Goodman's Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert, jazz scholar and musician Catherine Tackley provides the first in depth, scholarly study of this seminal concert and recording. Combining rigorous documentary and archival research with close analysis of the recording, Tackley strips back the accumulated layers of interpretation and meaning to assess the performance in its original context, and explore what the material has come to represent in its recorded form. Taking a complete view of the concert, she examines the rich cultural setting in which it took place, and analyzes the compositions, arrangements and performances themselves, before discussing the immediate reception, and lasting legacy and impact of this storied event and album. As the definitive study of one of the most important recordings of the twentieth-century, Benny Goodman's Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert is a must-read for all serious jazz fans, musicians and scholars.

Domenico Scarlatti (Alianza Musica Ser.)
by Ralph KirkpatrickAgain available in paperback, this definitive work on the genius of Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) is the result of twelve years of devoted effort by America's foremost harpsichordist and one of the principal authorities on eighteenth-century harpsichord music. Mr. Kirkpatrick traveled extensively to collect material that has tripled the known facts about Scarlatti's life, providing the first adequate biography of one of the greatest harpsichord composers of the eighteenth century and one of the most original composers of all time. The second half of his book is an illuminating study of Scarlatti's 555 sonatas, concluding with a chapter on their performance. The book contains extensive appendixes, including discussions of ornamentation and Scarlatti's vocal music, and an updated section of addenda and corrigenda.
