Statistical Mechanics of Hamiltonian Systems with Bounded Kinetic Terms: An Insight into Negative Temperature (Springer Theses)

Recent experimental evidence about the possibility of "absolute negative temperature" states in physical systems has triggered a stimulating debate about the consistency of such a concept from the point of view of Statistical Mechanics. It is not clear whether the usual results of this field can be safely extended to negative-temperature states; some authors even propose fundamental modifications to the Statistical Mechanics formalism, starting with the very definition of entropy, in order to avoid the occurrence of negative values of the temperature tout-court.The research presented in this thesis aims to shed some light on this controversial topic. To this end, a particular class of Hamiltonian systems with bounded kinetic terms, which can assume negative temperature, is extensively studied, both analytically and numerically. Equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium properties of this kind of system are investigated, reinforcing the overall picture that the introduction of negative temperature does not lead to any contradiction or paradox.

This book develops the theory of productivity measurement using the empirical index number approach. The theory uses multiplicative indices and additive indicators as measurement tools, instead of relying on the usual neo-classical assumptions, such as the existence of a production function characterized by constant returns to scale, optimizing behavior of the economic agents, and perfect foresight. The theory can be applied to all the common levels of aggregation (micro, meso, and macro), and half of the book is devoted to accounting for the links existing between the various levels. Basic insights from National Accounts are thereby used. The final chapter is devoted to the decomposition of productivity change into the contributions of efficiency change, technological change, scale effects, and input or output mix effects. Applications on real-life data demonstrate the empirical feasibility of the theory. The CIMPA school was aimed at PhD students and Post Docs in the mathematical sciences. Parts (or all) of this book can be used as the basis for traditional or individual reading courses on the topic. For this reason, examples and exercises (some with solutions) are provided throughout.

This volume contains the proceedings of a NATO/London Mathematical Society Advanced Study Institute held in Oxford from 25 July - 7 August 1982. The institute concerned the theory and applications of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations, with emphasis on techniques appropriate to systems of more than one equation. Most of the lecturers and participants were analysts specializing in partial differential equations, but also present were a number of numerical analysts, workers in mechanics, and other applied mathematicians. The organizing committee for the institute was J.M. Ball (Heriot-Watt), T.B. Benjamin (Oxford), J. Carr (Heriot-Watt), C.M. Dafermos (Brown), S. Hildebrandt (Bonn) and J.S. pym (Sheffield) . The programme of the institute consisted of a number of courses of expository lectures, together with special sessions on different topics. It is a pleasure to thank all the lecturers for the care they took in the preparation of their talks, and S.S. Antman, A.J. Chorin, J.K. Hale and J.E. Marsden for the organization of their special sessions. The institute was made possible by financial support from NATO, the London Mathematical Society, the u.S. Army Research Office, the u.S. Army European Research Office, and the u.S. National Science Foundation.
