The Normalisation of Cyprus’ Partition Among Greek Cypriots: Political Economy and Political Culture in a Divided Society

This book explores the basic dynamics that shaped the Cyprus problem, with a focus on recent decades. The author deals with the periods, nodal points and fields that produced the conditions for the normalisation of partition and also presents the Cyprus problem as viewed from the outside. The chapters approach Cyprus’ division in light of power relations in society, the interaction between the political elite and society, and discuss the political and ideological dynamics as manifested in the public sphere. While analysing primarily the Greek Cypriot community, the book also refers to parallel developments in the Turkish Cypriot and international communities, arguing that the normalisation of Cyprus’ partition is rooted in the political economy and political culture of Greek Cypriots. Norm and Ideology in Spoken French: A Sociolinguistic History of Liaison

This volume offers a diachronic sociolinguistic perspective on one of the most complex and fascinating variable speech phenomena in contemporary French. Liaison affects a number of word-final consonants which are realized before a vowel but not pre-pausally or before a consonant. Liaisons have traditionally been classified as obligatoire (obligatory), interdite (forbidden) and facultative (optional), the latter category subject to a highly complex prescriptive norm. This volume traces the evolution of this norm in prescriptive works published since the 16th Century, and sets it against actual practice as evidenced from linguists’ descriptions and recorded corpora. The author argues that optional (or variable) liaison in French offers a rich and well-documented example of language change driven by ideology in Kroch’s (1978) terms, in which an elite seeks to maintain a complex conservative norm in the face of generally simplifying changes led by lower socio-economic groups, who tend in this case to restrict liaison to a small set of traditionally obligatory environments.

Die beiden vorliegenden Arbeiten, die er kurz vor seinem plötzlichen Tod am 4. 12. 1986 abge­ schlossen hat, sind ein weiterer Beleg für diese Kompetenz. Beide Arbeiten beleuchten - kritisch-konstruktiv, wie seine Haltung stets war - auf empirischer Basis die Er­ gebnisse nordrhein-westfälischer Initiativen zu mehr Chancengerechtigkeit im Bildungswesen. Die Arbeit "Abitur- und Studierfähigkeit von Oberstufen­ schülern mit ungleicher schulischer Vorbildung" befaßt sich mit den Konsequenzen aus der 1974 in Nordrhein-Westfalen geschaffenen Möglichkeit, im Zuge der Bemühungen um eine größere Durchlässigkeit im dreigliedrigen Schulsystem sowohl Haupt- als auch Realschülern - beim Vorliegen bestimmter leistungsbezogener Voraussetzungen - den Ein­ tritt in die gymnasiale Oberstufe zu eröffnen. Der Autor schreibt: "Diese Chance muß (te) deshalb als mit einem besonderen Risiko behaftet angesehen werden, weil Haupt­ schüler und Realschüler den grundständigen Gymnasiasten gegenüber mit ungleichen Lernvoraussetzungen formaler und materialer Art in die Oberstufe übergehen". Die zwei­ stufige Untersuchung, die sich insgesamt auf den Unter­ suchungszeitraum von 1977 bis 1986 erstreckt, prüft den Erfolg dieser nordrhein-westfälischen Reformmaßnahme am Maßstab der Erfolgsquoten im Abitur, der dabei erreichten Durchschnittsnoten, des Studienwahlverhaltens und der damit verbundenen Motivationsstruktur, der Einschätzung der Funktionstüchtigkeit des Kurssystems und schließlich der Bewährung im Studium.

The Nordic Welfare State in Three Eras: From Emancipation to Discipline analyses the historical and contemporary evolution of Nordic welfare states in Denmark, Sweden and Finland during three periods: the developmental period until the end of WWII, the period of emancipatory welfare institutions until the 1980s, and the period of restructuring from the 1980s until present times. The three eras discussed are shared in one way or another by all welfare states. However, Nordic welfare institutions are unique in the sense that they were particularly compatible with the ideas of Keynesian macro-economic management that constituted the blueprint of international economic ideas during the post-war period. This ground-breaking book will show how preceding emancipating elements of Nordic welfare states were largely lost in the process of renegotiating the post-war social order, and replaced by new elements of discipline and control.

She then presents interview data on the general sense of justice in Nordic countries, in particular exploring how much social and legal equality the Scandinavians have achieved in their welfare states. The Nordic Model is the 20th-century Scandinavian recipe for combining stable democracies, individual freedom, economic growth and comprehensive systems for social security. But what happens when Sweden and Finland – two countries topping global indexes for competitiveness, productivity, growth, quality of life, prosperity, and equality – start doubting themselves and their future? Is the Nordic Model at a crossroads? Historically, consensus, continuity, social cohesion, and broad social trust have been hailed as key components for the success and for the self-images of Sweden and Finland. In the contemporary, however, political debates in both countries are increasingly focused on risks, threats, and worry. Social disintegration, political polarization, geopolitical anxieties, and threat of terrorism are often dominant themes. This book focuses on what appears to be a paradox: countries with low income differences, high faith in social institutions, and relatively high cultural homogeneity becoming fixated on the fear of polarization, disintegration, and diminished social trust.
