A Class Apart

by Diana Appleyard

Class? It doesn't exist any more, so we're told. We're not supposed to be conscious of subtle class differences. We no longer look down on people because of their accents, their education or the car they drive. Or do we?Lucy Beresford knows her middle-class family thinks she's married beneath her when she gets together with the devastatingly sexy Rob. He's gorgeous, he's thoughtful, he's clever - but he's undeniably working class. Her parents cannot believe that she would choose him above Max, her so-suitable former boyfriend - who is truly one of us. Gradually the differences between Rob and Lucy - at first so unimportant - begin to loom large, as they argue over how the house should be decorated, how the children should be educated, and whether the evening meal should be called 'dinner' or 'tea'.In this funny, contentious and brilliantly observed novel, Diana Appleyard scratches the surface to reveal the petty snobberies which still exist in most of us, and which make Rob and Lucy...A Class Apart.Class? by Danny Baker Danny Kelly

Classic Wodehouse: Articles And Stories - The Original Classic Edition

by P. G. Wodehouse

'The funniest writer ever to put words to paper.' Hugh LaurieCocktail TimeAn Uncle Fred novelFrederick, Earl of Ickenham, remains young at heart. So it is for him the act of a moment to lean out of the Drones Club window with a catapult and ping the silk top-hat off his grumpy in-law, the distinguished barrister Sir Raymond Bastable. Unfortunately things don’t end there. The sprightly earl finds that his action has inspired a scandalous bestseller and a film script – but this is as nothing compared with the entangled fates of the couples that surround him and which only his fabled sweetness and light can unravel.Joy in the MorningA Jeeves and Wooster novelTrapped in rural Steeple Bumpleigh, a man less stalwart than Bertie Wooster would probably give way at the knees. For among those present were Florence Craye, to whom Bertie had once been engaged and her new fiancé ‘Stilton’ Cheesewright, who sees Bertie as a snake in the grass. And that biggest blot on the landscape, Edwin the Boy Scout, who is busy doing acts of kindness out of sheer malevolence. All Bertie’s forebodings are fully justified. For in his efforts to oil the wheels of commerce, promote the course of true love and avoid the consequences of a vendetta, he becomes the prey of all and sundry. In fact only Jeeves can save him …Summer LightningA Blandings novelThe Empress of Blandings, prize-winning pig and all-consuming passion of Clarence, Ninth Earl of Emsworth, has disappeared. Blandings Castle is in uproar and there are suspects a-plenty - from Galahad Threepwood (who is writing memoirs so scandalous they will rock the aristocracy to its foundations) to the Efficient Baxter, chilling former secretary to Lord Emsworth. Even Beach the Butler seems deeply embroiled. And what of Sir Gregory Parsloe-Parsloe, Clarence’s arch-rival, and his passion for prize-winning pigs? With the castle full of deceptions and impostors, will Galahad’s memoirs ever see the light of day? And will the Empress be returned …?Meet Mr MullinerIn the Angler’s Rest, drinking hot scotch and lemon, sits one of Wodehouse’s greatest raconteurs. Mr Mulliner, his vivid imagination lubricated by Miss Postlethwaite the barmaid, has fabulous stories to tell of the extraordinary behaviour of his far-flung family: In particular there’s Wilfred, inventor of Raven Gypsy face-cream and Snow of the Mountain Lotion, who lights on the formula for Buck-U-Uppo, a tonic given to elephants to enable them to face tigers with the necessary nonchalance. Its explosive effects on a shy young curate and then the higher clergy is gravely revealed. And there’s his cousin James, the detective-story writer, who has inherited a cottage more haunted than anything in his own imagination. And stuttering George the crossword whizz. And Isadore Zinzinheimer, head of the Bigger, Better & Brighter Motion Picture Company. Tall tales all – but among Wodehouse’s best.

Classical Hollywood Comedy

by Kristine Brunovska Karnick Henry Jenkins

Classical Hollywood Comedy applies the recent return to history in film studies to the genre of classical Hollywod comedy, as well as broadening the definition of those works considered central in the field. This anthology combines detailed case studies of specific films and filmmakers, with overviews of general theoretical and questions. The book as a whole considers film comedy's roots in other forms of popular culture, its place within industry practice, the shifting relationship to the audience, and its gradual integration into the normative of the studio film narrative. Within this framework, the book examines the issues of gender and sexuality, neglected by most previous treatments of classical Hollywood comedy, as well as taking on both silent and sound comedy, areas of the genre rarely examined together. The essays offer new insights into canonical figures such as Preston Sturges and Buster Keaton, as well as reflecting new interest in the work of Cecil B. DeMille, Mae West and Jerry Lewis. Jenkins has also published Textual Poachers (Routledge, 1992).

Classroom Clangers

by John Golds Vincent Shanley

Education is one aspect of life which we all share, and consequently it provides a common interest. Memories of our own education and school life frequently impinge on our psyche, espcially if we have children undergoing the process. Too often these memories are soberring remiscences punctuated by humeorous recollections which prompt the wry smile and the oft-qupoted anecdote. While Education is a very serious subject, it does have a lighter side which in these days of cutbacks, inspections and media-concentration, helps releiieve the tension. This book is a collection of mad imprints, daft headlines and humorous anecdotes relation to the world of Education. More often than not it is the unintentional jokes which are the funniest, and its compilation contains the most amusing and comical. Suspecting a hidden agenda behind Meredith's accusations, he sets out to clear his name, whatever the consequences and whatever price he has to pay to achieve it.

Clinton & Me: How Eight Years Of A Pants-free Presidency Changed My Nation, My Family And My Life

by Michael Graham

The same week William Jefferson Clinton was sworn in as head of our national family, I became a father. And so begins one columnist's journey through the Clinton presidency. For humorist and political commentator Michael Graham, the trip is a hilarious tour de farce of America at its most ridiculous, and its most real. In the tradition of H. L. Menken (after whom his son is named) and P. J. O'Rourke, Michael Graham lets fly his lampoons on deserving targets across the American landscape. From Al Gore on the left ("the ideology of Ralph Nader, the ethics of Richard Nixon") to Strom Thurmond on the right (campaign slogan: "Getting Out of Bed for More Than 94% of a Century!"), Graham casts his merrily cynical eye and sees all. Graham begins this collection of contemporary humor with an overview of the Clinton years and how they have changed him as a citizen, a father, and a writer ("What other president could turn the phrase 'face time' into an instant punchline?") He proceeds to take us on a joyous ride through the peaks and valleys of the pants-free presidency. It's all here: Filegate, Travelgate, the Buddhist Temple and, of c
