Global and Multinational Advertising

by Basil G. Englis

Few applied disciplines are more sensitive to cross-cultural issues than marketing and consumer psychology. The chapters prepared for this volume reflect awareness of both similarities and differences within and across cultures. They include analyses of methodological issues, theoretical investigations of cultural and social values and their implications for marketing specialists, studies of gender- and sub-culture specific advertising, and investigations of advertising efforts in several different international markets. The scholars and advertising professionals who contributed these chapters will have much to say to consumer psychologists and marketing specialists alike.

The Global Competitiveness of the Asian Firm

by Hellmut Schuette

Twenty-one authors from a variety of backgrounds analyse the global competitiveness of the Asian firm in different parts of the world and at different phases of their internationalisation process. They find that the Asian firms' emphasis on 'soft' skills such as networking, organisational learning and sharing stands in sharp contrast to the economic rationality of Western firms, which stress individual performance measurement, clearly defined responsibilities and accountability. Asian firms face serious problems in adjusting their systems to the Western environment without losing their competitiveness.

The Goals of Macroeconomic Policy

by Martin Prachowny

Politicians win elections by promising 'Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!' but in practice these promises quickly fall by the wayside. The Goals of Macroeconomic Policy asks why. It begins with the observation that there is no convincing economic argument that full employment should be the primary objective of economic policy in all circumstances. In the light of this it examines whcy policy has failed so consistantly. It explains this by a theory of the labour market which shows why most workers are happy to operate in a way which militates against full employment. It then proceeds to analyse the rather dire consequences of this for the budget deficit.

TQM AND TAYLORISM; HOW THEY COMPARE H. Bremer Preface The industrial world today is divided between two camps: a culture based on the principles of Total Quality Management (TQM), developed in the Far East, and one still strongly influenced by the origins of "Scientific Management", intro duced in the West by F.W. Taylor and others at the turn of the century. This divergence will be shown to have arisen in the last forty years, long enough for a new generation of managers and corresponding culture to emerge. The two cul tures are so deeply entrenched that it is difficult for one to change to the other. However, there is strong evidence to support the contention that people-oriented TQM is superior, and those companies clinging to Taylor models now face diffi cult decisions. Actions by Taylor-companies to move to TQM rnight weH be hindered rather than helped by applying present Quality Assurance Standards, developed by Taylor-oriented national and international Standards Institutions.

Good Novels, Better Management: Reading Organizational Realities in Fiction

by Barbara Czarniawska-Joerges Pierre Guillet de Monthoux

Government and Markets: Establishing a Democratic Constitutional Order and a Market Economy in Former Socialist Countries (International Studies in Economics and Econometrics #32)

by Hendrikus J. Blommestein

Government and Markets is the first book to tackle systematically and in a multidisciplinary fashion the role of democratic governments during and after the transition from plan to market. The role of governments during the transformation is important for eliminating the obstacles and putting into place the conditions for the emergence of a viable market economy. Moreover, governments need to play a key role in establishing a political-legal order that promotes political liberties and economic freedom. In contrast to other literature on the transformation process in formerly planned systems, this volume focuses also on the creation of autonomous and accountable governments as part of the liberal economic order. Finally, the volume analyzes the role of the legal state in creating a competitive market economy. Government and Markets addresses itself to scholars, politicians policy makers interested in the establishment of a democratic, competitive order in formerly planned political economic systems.

The political implications are also discussed, and the text draws on common themes and lessons to be gained from the measures so far. The volume is divided into sections on energy, agriculture, air and water pollution, and waste management.

Growth And Development: with Special Reference to Developing Economies

by A.P. Thirlwall

This widely used textbook is specifically designed for students of economics and the social sciences who are taking a first course in economic development with a background knowledge of micro and macro economics. Written in a simple but rigorous way, it has many examples to help the student, and provide a set of questions for discussion and review at the end of each chapter. In this extensively revised fifth edition of Growth and Development, all the statistics have been updated and new institutional material has been added. In addition there is a much extended discussion of the world debt problem, of financial liberalisation, and of the concept of sustainable development.

Growth and Diffusion Phenomena: Mathematical Frameworks and Applications (Texts in Applied Mathematics #14)

by Robert B. Banks

Diffusion and growth phenomena abound in the real world surrounding us. Someexamples: growth of the world's population, growth rates of humans, public interest in news events, growth and decline of central city populations, pollution of rivers, adoption of agricultural innovations, and spreading of epidemics and migration of insects. These and numerous other phenomena are illustrations of typical growth and diffusion problems confronted in many branches of the physical, biological and social sciences as well as in various areas of agriculture, business, education, engineering medicine and public health. The book presents a large number of mathematical models to provide frameworks forthe analysis and display of many of these. The models developed and utilizedcommence with relatively simple exponential, logistic and normal distribution functions. Considerable attention is given to time dependent growth coefficients and carrying capacities. The topics of discrete and distributed time delays, spatial-temporal diffusion and diffusion with reaction are examined. Throughout the book there are a great many numerical examples. In addition and most importantly, there are more than 50 in-depth "illustrations" of the application of a particular framework ormodel based on real world problems. These examples provide the reader with an appreciation of the intrinsic nature of the phenomena involved. They address mainly readers from the physical, biological, and social sciences, as the only mathematical background assumed is elementary calculus. Methods are developed as required, and the reader can thus acquire useful tools for planning, analyzing, designing, and evaluating studies of growth transfer and diffusion phenomena. The book draws on the author's own hands-on experience in problems of environmental diffusion and dispersion, as well as in technology transfer and innovation diffusion.

Grundbegriffe der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung und Statistischen Methodenlehre (Physica-Lehrbuch)

by Herbert Basler
