Advanced Data Analytics in Health (Smart Innovation, Systems and Technologies #93)

by Philippe J. Giabbanelli Vijay K. Mago Elpiniki I. Papageorgiou

This book introduces readers to the methods, types of data, and scale of analysis used in the context of health. The challenges of working with big data are explored throughout the book, while the benefits are also emphasized through the discoveries made possible by linking large datasets. Methods include thorough case studies from statistics, as well as the newest facets of data analytics: data visualization, modeling and simulation, and machine learning. The diversity of datasets is illustrated through chapters on networked data, image processing, and text, in addition to typical structured numerical datasets. While the methods, types of data, and scale have been individually covered elsewhere, by bringing them all together under one “umbrella” the book highlights synergies, while also helping scholars fluidly switch between tools as needed. New challenges and emerging frontiers are also discussed, helping scholars grasp how methods will need to change in response to the latest challenges in health.

by Longbing Cao Yong Feng Jiang Zhong

With the ever-growing power of generating, transmitting, and collecting huge amounts of data, information overloadis nowan imminent problemto mankind. The overwhelming demand for information processing is not just about a better understanding of data, but also a better usage of data in a timely fashion. Data mining, or knowledge discovery from databases, is proposed to gain insight into aspects ofdata and to help peoplemakeinformed, sensible, and better decisions. At present, growing attention has been paid to the study, development, and application of data mining. As a result there is an urgent need for sophisticated techniques and toolsthat can handle new ?elds of data mining, e. g. , spatialdata mining, biomedical data mining, and mining on high-speed and time-variant data streams. The knowledge of data mining should also be expanded to new applications. The 6th International Conference on Advanced Data Mining and Appli- tions(ADMA2010)aimedtobringtogethertheexpertsondataminingthrou- out the world. It provided a leading international forum for the dissemination of original research results in advanced data mining techniques, applications, al- rithms, software and systems, and di?erent applied disciplines. The conference attracted 361 online submissions from 34 di?erent countries and areas. All full papers were peer reviewed by at least three members of the Program Comm- tee composed of international experts in data mining ?elds. A total number of 118 papers were accepted for the conference. Amongst them, 63 papers were selected as regular papers and 55 papers were selected as short papers.

Advanced Data Mining and Applications: 4th International Conference, ADMA 2008, Chengdu, China, October 8-10, 2008, Proceedings (Lecture Notes in Computer Science #5139)

by Nick Cercone Xue Li Changjie Tang Charles X. Ling Xiaofang Zhou

The Fourth International Conference on Advanced Data Mining and Applications (ADMA 2008) will be held in Chengdu, China, followed by the last three successful ADMA conferences (2005 in Wu Han, 2006 in Xi'an, and 2007 Harbin). Our major goal of ADMA is to bring together the experts on data mining in the world, and to provide a leading international forum for the dissemination of original research results in data mining, including applications, algorithms, software and systems, and different disciplines with potential applications of data mining. This goal has been partially achieved in a very short time despite the young age of the conference, thanks to the rigorous review process insisted upon, the outstanding list of internationally renowned keynote speakers and the excellent program each year. ADMA is ranked higher than, or very similar to, other data mining conferences (such as PAKDD, PKDD, and SDM) in early 2008 by an independent source: cs-conference-ranking. org. This year we had the pleasure and honor to host illustrious keynote speakers. Our distinguished keynote speakers are Prof. Qiang Yang and Prof. Jiming Liu. Prof. Yang is a tenured Professor and postgraduate studies coordinator at Computer Science and Engineering Department of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is also a member of AAAI, ACM, a senior member of the IEEE, and he is also an as- ciate editor for the IEEE TKDE and IEEE Intelligent Systems, KAIS and WI Journals.

This volume contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Advanced Data Mining and Applications (ADMA 2009), held in Beijing, China, during August 17–19, 2009. We are pleased to have a very strong program. Acceptance into the conference proceedings was extremely competitive. From the 322 submissions from 27 countries and regions, the Program Committee selected 34 full papers and 47 short papers for presentation at the conference and inclusion in the proceedings. The c- tributed papers cover a wide range of data mining topics and a diverse spectrum of interesting applications. The Program Committee worked very hard to select these papers through a rigorous review process and extensive discussion, and finally c- posed a diverse and exciting program for ADMA 2009. An important feature of the main program was the truly outstanding keynote spe- ers program. Edward Y. Chang, Director of Research, Google China, gave a talk titled "Confucius and 'Its' Intelligent Disciples". Being right in the forefront of data mining applications to the world's largest knowledge and data base, the Web, Dr. Chang - scribed how Google's Knowledge Search product help to improve the scalability of machine learning for Web-scale applications. Charles X. Ling, a seasoned researcher in data mining from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, talked about his in- vative applications of data mining and artificial intelligence to gifted child education.
