Own Your Weird: An Oddly Effective Way for Finding Happiness in Work, Life, and Love

by Jason Zook

Tired of all the "shoulds" that guide your life? Want to create a life full of meaning? Work on your own terms? See the world a little differently? Then it's time to Own Your Weird. Creative entrepreneur Jason Zook certainly walks the walk of "owning his weird." He's had some crazy yet successful schemes -- he's made over a million dollars by having more than 1,600 companies pay him to wear their t-shirt (a project called I WearYour Shirt). Later he auctioned off his last name twice, for $50K each time. He then self-published his first book Creativity for Sale by nabbing sponsors and generating $75K in revenue. Now Own Your Weird is targeted to other potential "out of the box" thinkers who dream not only of doing work on their own terms, but also creating a meaningful life. Consider Jason your spirit guide, offering strategies for honing in on what makes you weird, recognizing when feedback is just another form of procrastination, and how to stop with social media already. There's a specific set of strategies and exercises that can help you prioritize your life over your business, by identifying your MMM (Minimum Monthly Magic) number. He also offers examples from his own life (how he got out of $124K worth of debt, escaped the pressure to have a big wedding, and has thrived on social media by primarily ignoring it). Own Your Weird is the permission slip you need to take that big risk. To finally chase down that big idea. And to let go of "supposed to" thoughts. See how life opens up when you break out of the blueprint.

Ethics, Meaning, and Market Society (Routledge Focus on Business and Management)

by Laszlo Zsolnai

This book explores the underlying causes of the pervasive dominance of ‘unethics’ in contemporary affairs in economics, business, and society. It is argued that the state of unethics is related to the overexpansion of market and market values in all spheres of social life and human activities. A correlate of this development is the emergence of an extremely individualistic, materialistic and narcissistic mind-set that dictates the decisions and behavior of people and organizations. The author argues that art can help to overcome the dominant market metaphysics of our age, as genuine art creates models of 'poetic dwelling,' which can generate non-linear, progressive change that opens up a larger playing field for ethics. Aesthetics and ethics go hand in hand. Ethical action is not just right for its own sake, but makes the world a richer, livable and more beautiful place. Ethics, Meaning, and Market Society will be of interest to students at an advanced level, academics, researchers and professionals. It addresses the topics with regard to ethics in economics, business, and society in a contemporary context.

Spiritual Alchemy: From Jacob Boehme to Mary Anne Atwood (Oxford Studies in Western Esotericism)

by Mike A. Zuber

Most professional historians see the relationship between pre-modern and modern alchemy as one of discontinuity and contrast. Mike A. Zuber challenges this dominant understanding and explores aspects of alchemy that have been neglected by recent work in the history of science. The predominant focus on the scientific aspect of alchemy, such as laboratory experiment, practical techniques, and material ingredients, argues Zuber, marginalizes the things that render alchemy so fascinating: its rich and vivid imagery, reliance on the medium of manuscript, and complicated relationship with religion. Spiritual Alchemy traces the early-modern antecedents of modern alchemy through generations of followers of Jacob Boehme, the cobbler and theosopher of Görlitz. As Boehme's disciples down the generations -- including the Silesian nobleman Abraham von Franckenberg and the London-based German immigrant Dionysius Andreas Freher, among others -- studied his writings, they drew on his spiritual alchemy, adapted it, and communicated it to their contemporaries. Spiritual alchemy combines traditional elements of alchemical literature with Christian mysticism. Defying the boundaries between science and religion, this combination was transmitted from Görlitz ultimately to England. In 1850, it inspired a young woman, later known as Mary Anne Atwood, to write her Suggestive Inquiry into the Hermetic Mystery, usually seen as the first modern interpretation of alchemy. Drawing extensively on manuscript or otherwise obscure sources, Zuber documents continuity between pre-modern and modern forms of alchemy while exploring this hybrid phenomenon.

Alcohol and Aggression (Routledge Library Editions: Alcohol and Alcoholism)

In the 1980s the relationship between alcohol and aggression and violence was a controversial one. Much of previous thinking had been based on anecdotal evidence. In contrast this book, originally published in 1986, is based upon recent scientific evidence from a broad range of studies from animal experimentation to clinical and social research. The initial chapters describe what aggression is, in terms of theories of animal behaviour, how alcohol influences neural and endocrine functions and behaviour and how problematic it often is to extrapolate from animal research to humans. Later chapters give critical reviews of attempts to relate alcohol intake to violence and crime. The book represents a major synthesis of work from many disciplines and will interest workers in animal behaviour, alcohol studies, psychopharmacology and social psychology.

Alcohol Problems in Employment (Routledge Library Editions: Alcohol and Alcoholism)

The majority of problem-drinkers are not unemployed derelicts but are employed persons often with senior positions in commerce, the professions and industry. Furthermore, it is well-known that alcohol causes widespread absenteeism, inefficiency and accidents at work. Originally published in 1981, Alcohol Problems in Employment reviews the evidence relating to the general effects of alcohol misuse on employment and the special problems involved in certain ‘high-risk’ industries at the time. A number of international case studies are then presented to illustrate what was being done to counter the problem.

Alcoholism: New Knowledge and New Responses (Routledge Library Editions: Alcohol and Alcoholism)

Originally published in 1977, alcoholism was acknowledged to be a seriously growing problem in many parts of the world. It is a complex disorder with psychiatric, physical, psychological and social aspects, having far reaching harmful effects on the family and society, as well as on physical and mental health of the alcoholic themself. At the time of original publication it had been estimated that in England and Wales 11 out of every 1,000 in the adult population had a serious drink problem, and alcoholism was a major cause of admission to psychiatric and general hospitals. Alcoholism was a medico-social problem of such magnitude that this comprehensive volume, embodying advances in knowledge of causation, treatment and prevention filled an urgent need at the time. Still a major concern today this reissue can be read in its historical context.
