Amber Scott is Starting Over
by Ruth SabertonA city girl through and through - how will she cope with country life? The brilliantly entertaining new novel from the author of Katy Carter Wants a Hero.Amber Scott loves her city life - a terrific job working on a glossy magazine, and a fiancé, Ed, she's known since Uni. Even if Ed doesn't take her job seriously (as a solicitor, he doesn't have much time for women's magazines!), it is Amber's dream job. So Ed's news that he has taken a job in the West Country turns Amber's world upside down. The new life in Cornwall does not get off to the best start. The huge house Ed was so keen on is, well, huge - what is Amber going to do with four acres? And do M&S make Aga-ready meals? And when a handsome, if surly, man leads the local hunt over her land, it's more than Amber can stand. So how is it that, before long Amber is friends with the local eccentric Lady of the Manor, making love potions at her mother's recommendation - and answering the door naked to strangers...?
Amber's Wedding (Mills And Boon Vintage 90s Modern Ser.)
by Sara WoodA wedding to remember! The bride was resplendent, the groom was handsome, the location was grand and the cream of society was there. It was a glorious affair - with just a few small hitches. The groom was behaving both jealously and possessively, yet strangely Jake and Amber were friends but not lovers.
Ambition
by Julie Burchill'I'm sick of breaking bimbos - it's no fun, no challenge. Strong, hard career girls - they're the new filet mignon of females. Girls like you. Oh, I'm going to have fun breaking you, Susan.'Tobias Pope ruled his communications empire with fear and loathing - his employees feared him and he loathed them. But he may have met his match in Susan Street, the young, beautiful and nakedly ambitious deputy of his latest newspaper acquisition. As they fight, shop and orgy from Soho to Rio and from Sun City to New York City, getting what she wants - the top job - seems so simple. If she doesn't break first. No taboo is left unbroken, no fantasy left unfulfilled in this shocking exposé of the lengths to which one woman will go become editor of the UK's bestselling tabloid.
The Ambivalent Detective in Victorian Sensation Novels: Dickens, Braddon, and Collins (Routledge Studies in Nineteenth Century Literature)
by Sarah YoonThe Ambivalent Detective in Victorian Sensation Novels studies how the detective as a literary character evolved through the mid-nineteenth century in England, as seen in sensation novels. In contrast to most assumptions about the English detective, Yoon argues that the detective was more often tolerated than admired following the establishment of professional detectives in the London Metropolitan Police Force in 1842. Through studying the historical and literary contexts between the 1840s to the 1860s, Yoon argues that the detective was seen as a suspicious, even mistrusted and disdained, figure who was nonetheless viewed as necessary to combat rising levels of crime. The detective as a literary character responded to the often contradictory values and aspirations of the middle class, representing an independent masculinity and laying claim to scientific authority. This study surveys novels by Charles Dickens, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, and Wilkie Collins, alongside lesser-known writers like William Russell, James Redding Ware (pseudonym Andrew Forrester), and William Stephens Hayward. This book contributes to the study of mid-nineteenth-century Victorian culture and connects with broader studies of the detective fiction genre.
