Wondrous One Sheet Origami (AK Peters/CRC Recreational Mathematics Series)

by Meenakshi Mukerji

Wondrous One Sheet Origami is a how-to book full of beautiful origami designs covering a wide range of folding levels from simple to high intermediate, with more emphasis on the latter. The book is meant for audiences 12 years of age and above, and children folding at higher than age level. Most of the designs are flat and suitable for mounting on cards or framing as gifts. Features • Richly illustrated full-color book with clear, crisp diagrams following international standard, and an abundance of photographs of finished models• Select designs hand-picked by the author based on social media responses• Most of the designs incorporate color-change, a technique showing both sides of paper for enhanced beauty "Meenakshi Mukerji's work is both intricate and lovely. She's greatly respected in the origami world, one of the well-known world leaders in modular origami. Her books offer a nice exposition of the mathematical elements, but you're not being hit over the head with math lessons. You learn things without even realizing that you have." –Dr. Robert J. Lang "Meenakshi Mukerji is one of today's masters of modular origami, designs comprised of multiple pieces of paper. She also brings her ingenuity and creativity to designs made from a single piece of paper. Among the most appealing aspects of her single sheet work is the way she subtly manipulates a purely geometric form to fold a flower, a leaf, a butterfly, or card suits." –Peter Engel

Word Frequency Distributions (Text, Speech and Language Technology #18)

by R. Harald Baayen

It aims to make these techniques more accessible for non-specialists, both theoretically, by means of a careful introduction to the underlying probabilistic and statistical concepts, and practically, by providing a program library implementing the main models for word frequency distributions.

Word Problems: Research and Curriculum Reform (Studies in Mathematical Thinking and Learning Series)

by Stephen K. Reed

Research by cognitive psychologists and mathematics educators has often been compartmentalized by departmental boundaries. Word Problems integrates this research to show its relevance to the debate on the reform of mathematics education. Beginning with the different knowledge structures that represent rule learning and conceptual learning, the discussion proceeds to the application of these ideas to solving word problems. This is followed by chapters on elementary, multistep, and algebra problems, which examine similarities and differences in the cognitive skills required by students as the problems become more complex. The next section, on abstracting, adapting, and representing solutions, illustrates different ways in which solutions can be transferred to related problems. The last section focuses on topics emphasized in the NCTM Standards and concludes with a chapter that evaluates some of the programs on curriculum reform.

Words and Graphs (Monographs in Theoretical Computer Science. An EATCS Series)

by Sergey Kitaev Vadim Lozin

This is the first comprehensive introduction to the theory of word-representable graphs, a generalization of several classical classes of graphs, and a new topic in discrete mathematics. After extensive introductory chapters that explain the context and consolidate the state of the art in this field, including a chapter on hereditary classes of graphs, the authors suggest a variety of problems and directions for further research, and they discuss interrelations of words and graphs in the literature by means other than word-representability.The book is self-contained, and is suitable for both reference and learning, with many chapters containing exercises and solutions to seleced problems. It will be valuable for researchers and graduate and advanced undergraduate students in discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science, in particular those engaged with graph theory and combinatorics, and also for specialists in algebra.

Words and Their Meaning

by Howard Jackson

In this book, the development of the English dictionary is examined, along with the kinds of dictionary available, the range of information they contain, factors affecting their usage, and public attitudes towards them. As well as an descriptive analysis of word meaning, the author considers whether a thematic, thesaurus-like presentation might be more suited than the traditional alphabetical format to the description of words and their meaning.

Work and Cancer Survivors

by Michael Feuerstein

Cancer survivors are returning to the workplace in higher numbers than ever before. This is a positive outcome of the “war on cancer”, however, many of these cancer survivors face the possibility of illness- or treatment-related complications; employer discrimination or harassment; and other serious concerns. Cancer Survivorship and Work reviews many of the issues relevant to cancer survivors in the workplace from the survivors’, employers’, and global perspectives. This interdisciplinary and international volume brings together experts in fields as varied as epidemiology, economics, rehabilitation, psychology, human factors and ergonomics; law, and public policy to create a unique, up-to-date reference of what is currently known and what needs to be considered in the future. With this knowledge, challenges faced by this growing population can be better addressed by health care providers, employers, survivors and their families.

Work and Family in Japanese Society (SpringerBriefs in Population Studies)

by Junya Tsutsui

This book provides a systematic framework for interpreting the fertility decline in Japan. It situates the change in fertility rates in a broader context, such as family life and working customs. The basic argument it puts forward is that Japan has failed to establish a “dual-earner” society: women still face the trade-off between having a career or starting a family, which has led to an extremely low fertility rate in Japanese society. Further to this rather common explanation, which could also be applied to other low-fertility societies such as Germany and Italy, the author presents an original view. Japan has had its own momentum in holding on to its strong “men as breadwinners and women as housekeepers” model by creating a unique regime, namely, a Japanese model of a welfare society. This regime places special emphasis on the welfare provided by private companies and family members instead of by the government. Private firms are expected to secure men’s jobs and income to the greatest extent, taking advantage of Japanese employment customs. On the other hand, women are expected to provide care for their family members. The book argues that the familialist orientation is still dominant in Japan and is repeatedly reinforced in the policy context.

The Work of Raymond J. Carroll: The Impact and Influence of a Statistician

by Marie Davidian Xihong Lin Jeffrey S. Morris Leonard A. Stefanski

This volume contains Raymond J. Carroll's research and commentary on its impact by leading statisticians. Each of the seven main parts focuses on a key research area: Measurement Error, Transformation and Weighting, Epidemiology, Nonparametric and Semiparametric Regression for Independent Data, Nonparametric and Semiparametric Regression for Dependent Data, Robustness, and other work. The seven subject areas reviewed in this book were chosen by Ray himself, as were the articles representing each area. The commentaries not only review Ray’s work, but are also filled with history and anecdotes. Raymond J. Carroll’s impact on statistics and numerous other fields of science is far-reaching. His vast catalog of work spans from fundamental contributions to statistical theory to innovative methodological development and new insights in disciplinary science. From the outset of his career, rather than taking the “safe” route of pursuing incremental advances, Ray has focused on tackling the most important challenges. In doing so, it is fair to say that he has defined a host of statistics areas, including weighting and transformation in regression, measurement error modeling, quantitative methods for nutritional epidemiology and non- and semiparametric regression.

Work–Family Interface in Sub-Saharan Africa: Challenges and Responses (International Perspectives on Social Policy, Administration, and Practice)

by Zitha Mokomane

Problems associated with work-family conflict do not belong to individual families alone, but have a major social and economic impact on the greater community. This scenario also holds true across sub-Saharan Africa, as nations enter the global economy and rising numbers of women enter the workforce. One of the first resources to focus on this region, Work-Family Interface in Sub-Saharan Africa probes rarely-studied dimensions of conflict between paid employment and family responsibilities. It balances theoretical background, empirical findings and current and emerging interventions for an insightful and practical review of ongoing issues affecting working women with families. Coverage contrasts concepts of work and family between the developing world and the West and related social concerns such as gender expectations and sexual harassment are examined in the work context. The book describes a range of family strategies for resolving work-family friction and chapters end with policy recommendations as first steps toward remedying longstanding challenges. Among the thought-provoking dispatches:Ghana: Managing work and family demandsNigeria: Strain-based family interference with workBotswana: The social impact of job transfer policy on dual-career familiesKenya: The role of household help in work-family balanceSouth Africa: State measures toward work-care integrationZambia: The quest for a family policyAs evinced by these chapters, progress is gradual and far from uniform. As a guide for future study and future policy, Work-Family Interface in Sub-Saharan Africa is a substantial reference for sociologists, public health professionals, public and social policymakers and administrators.
