Passage through the Threshold of Technological Change: Insights into Leading Qualities of a Teacher

by Elizabeth Majocha

Technology is becoming entrenched in schools’ daily operations and classrooms. The evolution of information communication technology (ICT) is changing teachers’ delivery of content, their interactions with students, and their management of information. Because ICT places new, unfamiliar demands on preparation time, it challenges teachers to strengthen their qualities to lead others and to help them thrive during technological change. As a result of the author’s research work towards her doctorate degree, this book focuses on the four sets of qualities that are vital to teachers who are leading teachers, administrators, “digitally native” students, parents, and ICT professionals. These qualities are hidden in every teacher and appear to be deceptively simple, yet teachers need to nurture them within their core to effectively communicate and collaborate with others and expand their instructional repertoire with ICT. As these qualities strengthen, teacher leaders will be able to help their colleagues to realize their potential to use ICT beyond the classroom. This book focuses on the essence of being a teacher leader: • Coaching and mentoring • Assisting student learning • Supporting others • Becoming a curious technologist Taken from the author’s research findings, this book presents much-needed teacher leadership reflections for teachers, school administrators, directors, and professors on building qualities to lead others through weaving ICT into the culture of their classrooms.

Passibility: At the Limits of the Constructivist Metaphor (Classics in Science Education #3)

by Wolff-Michael Roth

This book argues that the ‘constructivist metaphor’ has become a self-appointed overriding concept that suppresses other modes of thinking about knowing and learning science. Yet there are questions about knowledge that constructivism cannot properly answer, such as how a cognitive structure can intentionally develop a formation that is more complex than itself; how a learner can aim at a learning objective that is, by definition, itself unknown; how we learn through pain, suffering, love or passion; and the role emotion and crises play in knowing and learning. In support of the hypothesis that passibility underlies cognition, readers are provided with a collation of empirical studies and phenomenological analyses of knowing and learning science—in schools, scientific laboratories and everyday life—all of which defy a constructivist explanation. The author argues that ‘passibility’ constitutes an essential factor in the development of consciousness, with a range of essential experiences that cannot be brought into the linguistic realm. His exploration is guided by concepts such as ‘otherness’, passion, passivity and undecidability, and concludes by resituating the construction metaphor to accord it its proper place in a more comprehensive theory of learning.

Passing It On: Growing Your Future Leaders

by Myles Munroe

Leaders everywhere, in arenas big and small, struggle with the desire and, frankly, the need to make sure their vision for the organization they have created or grown continues regardless of circumstances. And the question "what will be my legacy?" is a question all people ask themselves. Myles Munroe has observed that the tendency among leaders is to deal with this question as serious circumstances or retirement loom. Further, it is his belief that this is one of the most important decisions a leader will ever make. This book is a wakeup call. Myles Munroe wants all leaders to focus on building the right team for the future and to make it a top priority because the process is not a quick one. Properly mentoring the right people to ensure the continuation of an organization is actually a process that must be woven into that organization over a span of years or even decades. Chapter topics discussed include The Chaos of Transition The Leadership Dilemma Living Beyond Your Generation The Principles of MentoringPASSING IT ON shows how to use the concept of mentoring within an organization to value the distinct talents and abilities of the individuals. Mentoring is the pathway to developing leaders from within; leaders who are in line with the goals of the organization; leaders who are most likely to adopt and carry a vision forward.
