Pre-Schoolers with Autism: An Education and Skills Training Programme for Parents - Manual for Clinicians (PDF)

by Avril Brereton Bruce Tonge

'The title is an effective, manualized parent education programme' - Educational Book Review This ground-breaking training programme has been developed in response to a real need for evidence-based early interventions for very young autistic children. Authoritative and extensively tried and tested, it will help both parents and carers to understand the disorder and how it affects child development. Ultimately, the programme is designed to reduce the severity of emotional/behavioural difficulties by managing a child's particular problems and encouraging effective collaboration between professionals and parents. The programme is delivered through two accessible manuals - one for parents and one for clinicians - which provide all the information and materials you need. The Manual for Clinicians explains the purpose and content of each session and includes notes for discussion and teaching, a checklist of 'things to do', and photocopiable task sheets for distribution and discussion. The Manual for Parents features tasks, exercises and discussion points for group sessions, and complements these training materials with engaging personal accounts, an introduction to the history of autism, information about approaches to treatment, and a list of useful websites and further reading. Structured as a series of individual and small group sessions, the programme is designed to run for 20 weeks and covers key areas such as understanding and managing difficult behaviour; changing/encouraging new behaviours; communication problems in verbal and non-verbal children; social problems; and how to work and play together. Together, these manuals will provide you with all the information, support and resources you need to run this programme successfully.

Pre-Suasion: A Revolutionary Way to Influence and Persuade

by Robert Cialdini

When it comes to persuasion, success can begin before you say a word.‘An instant classic.’ Forbes‘Utterly fascinating.’ Adam Grant, author of Originals and Give and Take‘Shockingly insightful.’ Chip Heath, co-author of Switch and Made to Stick NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERIn his global bestseller Influence, Professor Robert Cialdini transformed the way we think about the craft of persuasion. Now he offers revelatory new insights into the art of winning people over: it isn’t just what we say or how we say it that counts, but also what goes on in the moments before we speak. This is the world of ‘pre-suasion’, where subtle turns of phrase, seemingly insignificant visual cues, and apparently unimportant details of location can prime people to say ‘yes’ even before they are asked. And as Cialdini reveals, it’s a world you can master. If you understand the tools of pre-suasion, you will better placed to win a debate, get support for an idea or cause, promote a campaign – even persuade yourself to do something you find difficult.Drawing on the latest research, and packed with fascinating case studies, Pre-Suasion is a masterclass in enhancing your powers of influence.‘Mind-blowing.’ Management Today‘Accessible and intellectually rigorous.’ Books of the Year, The Times‘Fascinating, fluent and original.’ Tim Harford, author of The Undercover Economist Strikes Back

Precoding Techniques for Digital Communication Systems

by C.-C. Kuo Shang-Ho Tsai Layla Tadjpour Yu-Hao Chang

During the past two decades, many communication techniques have been developed to achieve various goals such as higher data rate, more robust link quality, andmoreusercapacityinmorerigorouschannelconditions.Themost well known are, for instance, CDMA, OFDM, MIMO, multiuser OFDM, and UWB systems. All these systems havetheir ownunique superioritywhile they also induce other drawbacks that limit the system performance. Conventional way to overcome the drawback is to impose most of the computational e?ort in the receiver side and let the transmitter design much simpler than receiver. The fact is that, however, by leveraging reasonable computational e?ort to the transmitter, the receiver design can be greatly simpli?ed. For instance, multiaccess interference (MAI) has long been considered to limit the perf- mance of multiuser systems. Popular solutions to mitigate MAI issue include multiuser detection (MUD) or sophisticated signal processing for interference cancellation such as PIC or SIC. However, those solutions impose great b- den in the receiver. In this case, precoding o?er good solutions to achieve simple transceiver designs as we will mention later in this book. This book is intended to provide a comprehensive review of precoding techniques for digital communications systems from a signal processing p- spective. The variety of selected precoding techniques and their applications makes this book quite di?erent from other texts about precoding techniques in digital communication engineering.

Predatory Publishing

by Jingfeng Xia

Predatory Publishing introduces and examines many forms of unethical and unprofessional publishing, whilst also analyzing its tactics and impact on scholarly communication. Covering all aspects of predatory publishing, including topics such as predatory journals, hijacked publications, alternative metrics, and fraudulent conferences, the book considers the sociocultural, geopolitical, and technical impact of predatory behaviors. Demonstrating that predatory publishing has taken advantage of the open access movement, the author highlights the negative impact such publishing practices have had on science discovery and dissemination around the world. Efforts to counter unethical and destructive conduct, such as journal blacklists, peer-review sting operations, the implementation of the strict journal selection criteria by the Directory of Open Access Journals, and government regulations in some countries, are also fully described. Predatory Publishing is a useful resource for every researcher, practitioner, and student in the global scholarly community. Individuals can expect to get a whole picture of the practice by reading this book, and decision-makers will find it informative to support their decisions. This book will be of interest to those studying and working in the fields of publishing, library and information science, communication science, economics, and higher education. People in other fields, particularly biomedical sciences, will also find it useful.

The Preface: American Authorship in the Twentieth Century (New Directions in Book History)

by Ross K. Tangedal

Building on insights from the fields of textual criticism, bibliography, narratology, authorship studies, and book history, The Preface: American Authorship in the Twentieth Century examines the role that prefaces played in the development of professional authorship in America. Many of the prefaces written by American writers in the twentieth century catalogue the shifting landscape of a more self-consciously professionalized trade, one fraught with tension and compromise, and influenced by evolving reading publics. With analyses of Willa Cather, Ring Lardner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Robert Penn Warren, and Toni Morrison, Ross K. Tangedal argues that writers used prefaces as a means of expanding and complicating authority over their work and, ultimately, as a way to write about their careers. Tangedal’s approach offers a new way of examining American writers in the evolving literary marketplace of the twentieth century.
