Exploring the Nexus of Geoecology, Geography, Geoarcheology and Geotourism: Proceedings Of The 1st Springer Conference Of The Arabian Journal Of Geosciences (cajg-1), Tunisia 2018 (Advances in Science, Technology & Innovation)

by Ezzoura Errami Haroun Chenchouni Fernando Rocha Luisa Sabato

This edited volume is based on the best papers accepted for presentation during the 1st Springer Conference of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences (CAJG-1), Tunisia 2018. The book is of interest to all researchers in the fields of Environmental Sciences, Geoecology, Agroforestry, Geography, Geoarcheology and Geotourism. The Mediterranean Basin, Middle East and surrounding regions are ecologically unique due to large differences in climatic, geographical, and geological features, which grant countries of these regions with significant socio-economic potentials in terms of fertile agricultural lands, rich natural resources, and the existence of strategic resources such as crude oil and natural gas. However, the valuation of ecosystem functions, goods and services of natural and cultural heritages and bioressources of these regions is still little known. This volume offers an overview of the latest information and ideas on the physical environment of these regions, assessment and monitoring of natural bioressources including flora and fauna, and the use of cutting-edge methods for the development of sustainable agricultural systems. It gives also new socio-economic insights on geotourism and archaeology. Main topics include:1. Environmental Assessment and Monitoring of Agrisilvicultural Systems2. Environmental Impacts and Restoration Ecology of Natural and Agricultural Habitats3. Investigations and Applications in Environmental Biotechnology4. Spatiotemporal Patterns of Marine Biodiversity and Terrestrial Paleobiodiversity5. Socio-economics of Geotourism and Archaeology

Sustainable Hydraulics in the Era of Global Change: Proceedings of the 4th IAHR Europe Congress (Liege, Belgium, 27-29 July 2016)

by Sébastien Erpicum Benjamin Dewals Pierre Archambeau Michel Pirotton

In an increasingly urbanized world, water systems must be designed and operated according to innovative standards in terms of climate adaptation, resource efficiency, sustainability and resilience. This grand challenge triggers unprecedented questions for hydro-environment research and engineering. Shifts in paradigms are urgently needed in the way we view (circular) water systems, water as a renewable energy (production and storage), risk management of floods, storms, sea level rise and droughts, as well as their consequences on water quality, morphodynamics (e.g., reservoir sedimentation, scour, sustainability of deltas) and the environment. Addressing these issues requires a deep understanding of basic processes in fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, surface and groundwater flow, among others.

Marxism and the Individual

by Cem Eroğul

This book attempts to develop a Marxist theory of the human individual. It contends that the standard description of the human as a bio-psycho-social being is fundamentally deficient as it doesn’t specify which of these attributes is the determining one. As long as this is not done, the real nature of humanity cannot be uncovered.

Wave Propagation and Radiation in Gyrotropic and Anisotropic Media

by Abdullah Eroglu

As technology matures, communication system operation regions shift from mic- wave and millimeter ranges to sub-millimeter ranges. However, device perf- mance at very high frequencies suffers drastically from the material de?ciencies. As a result, engineers and scientists are relentlessly in search for the new types of materials, and composites which will meet the device performance requirements and not present any de?ciencies due to material electrical and magnetic properties. Anisotropic and gyrotropic materials are the class of the materials which are very important in the development high performance microwave devices and new types composite layered structures. As a result, it is a need to understand the wave propagation and radiation characteristics of these materials to be able to realize them in practice. This book is intended to provide engineers and scientists the required skill set to design high frequency devices using anisotropic, and gyrotropic materials by providing them the theoretical background which is blended with the real world engineering application examples. It is the author’s hope that this book will help to ?ll the gap in the area of applied electromagnetics for the design of microwave and millimeter wave devices using new types of materials. Each chapter in the book is designed to give the theory ?rst on the subject and solidify it with application examples given in the last chapter. The application examples for the radiation problems are given at the end of Chap. 5 and Chap. 6 for anisotropic and gyrotropic materials, respectively, after the theory section.

Nuclear Structure Study with Neutrons

by J. Ero

The International Conference on "Nuclear Structure Study with Neutrons" or ganized in Budapest between 31st July and 5th August. 1972. was the successor of a meeting held seven years ago in Antwerp. The close links between the two conferences were revealed not in name alone but. more importantly. in the choice of subjects discussed. As in Antwerp. the lectures and contributions to the Budapest Conference could be grouped under the following five main headings: nuclear spectroscopy; the optical model; the statistical model and intermediate structures; the mechanism of neutron capture and non-statistical effects; and, finally. miscellaneous special topics. The invited papers on the one hand summarizing recent developments and current thinking in one of the above main topics. and the other surveying the most important results of the contributed papers submitted to the Conference. were presented on the plenary sessions. Most of the contributed papers were read in full on three parallel sessions. This volume contains the complete text of all the lectures delivered in the plenary sessions and abstracts of the contributed papers. The invited talks were presented at the Conference in a rather random order because of technical reasons, it seemed. however, more sensible to change their order according to their subjects and to print them grouped under the above main headings. Further more we divided the Proceedings into two main parts, the first containing only the lectures of summarizing character. the second including the abstracts of the contributions together with the surveying talks.

Die Leistungssteigerung des menschlichen Gehirns: Neuro-Enhancement im interdisziplinären Diskurs

by Nicola Erny Matthias Herrgen Jan C. Schmidt

Amphiboles: Crystal Chemistry Phase Relations and Occurrence (Minerals, Rocks and Mountains #1)

by W. G. Ernst

This series of monographs represents continuation on an international basis of the previous series MINERALOGIE UNO PETROGRAPHIE IN EINZELOARSTELLUNGEN, published by Springer-Verlag. The voluminous results arising from recent progress in pure and applied re search increase the need for authoritative reviews but the standard scientific journals are unable to provide the space for them. By their very nature, text-books are unable to consider specific topics in depth and recent research met'hods and results often receive only cursory treat ment. Advanced reference volumes are usually too detailed except for experts in the field. It is often very expensive to purchase a symposium volume or an "Advances in . . . " volume for the sake of a specific review chapter surrounded by unrelated chapters. We hope that this monograph series will by-pass these problems in fulfilling the need. The purpose of the series is to publish, at reasonable prices, reviews and reports of care fully selected topics written by carefully selected authors, who are both good writers and experts in their scientific field. In general, the mono graphs will be concerned with the most recent research methods and results. The editors hope that the monographs will serve several functions, acting as supplements to existing text-books, guiding research workers, and providing the basis for advanced seminars. The first book to present and review this information in English for an international audience, it includes both overviews of the magmatic and associated sedimentary history, and selected key field sites, which are described in detail.

Searching and Researching: An Autobiography of a Nobel Laureate

by Richard R. Ernst Matthias Meili

In the last 130 years, 30 Swiss people have won a Nobel Prize, and one of them is Richard R. Ernst. He laid the foundation for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which revolutionized medical diagnostics across the globe. In his autobiography, which the scientist completed shortly before he passed away at the age of 87, he talks about his life. Prof. Ernst grew up in a family long-established in Winterthur, Switzerland, however his childhood and adolescence were overshadowed by a demanding father. He talks in detail about the start of his career in the 1960s, when he made a number of key discoveries at Varian Associates, Palo Alto, USA, as well as about his return to ETH Zürich, Switzerland, and the shark tank that university research is. The highly talented chemist reveals how his passion for Himalayan art began while travelling in Nepal, which ended in him building up one of the most significant collections of thangkas – the tantric Buddhist scrolls. In this book, Prof. Ernst discusses openly and directly about all aspects of his life, with humility and a wry sense of humor.

Hazardous Chemicals: Agents of Risk and Change, 1800-2000 (Environment in History: International Perspectives #17)

by Ernst Homburg and Elisabeth Vaupel

Although poisonous substances have been a hazard for the whole of human history, it is only with the development and large-scale production of new chemical substances over the last two centuries that toxic, manmade pollutants have become such a varied and widespread danger. Covering a host of both notorious and little-known chemicals, the chapters in this collection investigate the emergence of specific toxic, pathogenic, carcinogenic, and ecologically harmful chemicals as well as the scientific, cultural and legislative responses they have prompted. Each study situates chemical hazards in a long-term and transnational framework and demonstrates the importance of considering both the natural and the social contexts in which their histories have unfolded.

High-Resolution Imaging and Spectrometry of Materials (Springer Series in Materials Science #50)

by Frank Ernst Manfred Rühle

The characterisation of materials and material systems is an essential aspect of materials science. A few decades ago it became obvious that, because the properties of materials depend so critically on the microstructure of their components, this characterisation must be determined to the atomic level. This means that the position - as well as the nature - of individual atoms has to be determined at "critical" regions close to defects such as dislocations, interfaces, and surfaces. The great impact of advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques became apparent in the area of semiconducting materials, where the nature of internal interfaces between silicon and the corresponding silicides could be identified, and the results used to enhance the understanding of the properties of the compounds studied. At that time, advanced TEM techniques existed predominantly in the US. However, advanced TEM instrumentation was not available in the ma terials science and solid-state science communities in Germany. This gap was bridged by the late Peter Haasen who, after a visit to the US, initiated a Priority Programme on Microstructural Characterisation at the Volkswagen Foundation (Hannover). The programme was in effect from 1985 to 1997 and supported a wide range of research projects - from fundamental, trendy, innovative projects to projects in applied materials science.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Coronary Artery Disease (Developments in Cardiovascular Medicine #118)

by Ernst E. van der Wall Albert De Roos

It is with pleasure that I write this foreword for the book "Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Coronary Artery Disease", edited by Dr. van der Wall and Dr. de Roos. I am pleased for two reasons. Firstly, as chairman of the Scientific Board of the Interuniversity Cardiology Institute of the Netherlands (ICIN), because ever since the technique became available for use in medicine and biology our Institute has tried and succeeded to promote the introduction and dev- opment of magnetic resonance imaging in cardiology in the Netherlands. ICIN was the first cardiological institute on the European continent to purchase its own nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscope for the study of myocardial metabolism. Secondly, because I have always been infatuated with this noninvasive technique that can produce cardiac images without ionic radiation and at the same time allows for the study of myocardial metabolism as well. And even more so because nuclear magnetic resonance imaging in medicine is one of the shining examples of medical progress as a result of breakthrough discoveries in physics and chemistry.

Non-Centrosymmetric Superconductors: Introduction and Overview (Lecture Notes in Physics #847)

by Ernst Bauer and Manfred Sigrist

Superconductivity in materials without inversion symmetry in the respective crystal structures occurs in the presence of antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling as a consequence of an emerging electric field gradient. The superconducting condensate is then a superposition of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairs. This scenario accounts for various experimental findings such as nodes in the superconducting gap or extremely large upper critical magnetic fields. Spin-triplet pairing can occur in non-centrosymmetric superconductors in spite of Anderson’s theorem that spin-triplet pairing requires a crystal structure that exhibits inversion symmetry. This book, authored and edited by leading researchers in the field, is both an introduction to and overview on this exciting branch of novel superconductors. Its self-contained and tutorial style makes it particularly suitable for self-study and as source of teaching material for special seminars and courses. At the same time it constitutes an up-to-date and authoritative reference for anyone working in this exciting field.
