Testmatch (Nhb Modern Plays Ser.)

by Kate Attwell

Present day, it's the Women's Cricket World Cup: England vs India. There's a rain delay. Tensions mount, ambitions are laid bare and a whole new tactical game begins. Calcutta, in the eighteenth century. Two British colonial administrators encounter challenges on the field of play that threaten the entire regime. In this game of integrity and power, past and present collide… Kate Attwell's funny, provocative play explores and explodes the mythology of fair play. First performed in 2019 at American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, it received its British premiere in 2024, produced by the Orange Tree Theatre, ETT and Octagon Theatre, Bolton, and directed by Diane Page. 'Genuinely funny, refreshingly unusual, accomplished… Split into two acts, wildly contrasted on the surface but each informing the other to sometimes surprising effect, Testmatch often recalls Caryl Churchill at her most absurd and mould-breaking… tremendously entertaining' - WhatsOnStage 'A play that bristles with ideas' - The Stage 'Kate Attwell's journey through cricket wittily interrogates wilful ignorance in the face of corruption and brutality… her taut writing coils [her characters'] emotions tightly, pinpointing their urgent, full-bodied need to win… a smart, messy, angry reckoning with history and the idea of good sportsmanship' - Guardian 'Lively and energetic' - Reviews Hub 'Enjoyable… a satire on colonialism that starts off light and builds to something rather more bleak and damning… Attwelll's text is witty and impressive' - Time Out

Shakespeare's Once and Future Child: Speculations on Sovereignty

by Joseph Campana

A study of Shakespeare’s child figures in relation to their own political moment, as well as our own. Politicians are fond of saying that “children are the future.” How did the child become a figure for our political hopes? Joseph Campana’s book locates the source of this idea in transformations of childhood and political sovereignty during the age of Shakespeare, changes spectacularly dramatized by the playwright himself. Shakespeare’s works feature far more child figures—and more politically entangled children—than other literary or theatrical works of the era. Campana delves into this rich corpus to show how children and childhood expose assumptions about the shape of an ideal polity, the nature of citizenship, the growing importance of population and demographics, and the question of what is or is not human. As our ability to imagine viable futures on our planet feels ever more limited, and as children take up legal proceedings to sue on behalf of the future, it behooves us to understand the way past child figures haunt our conversations about intergenerational justice. Shakespeare offers critical precedents for questions we still struggle to answer.

Multilingual Dramaturgies: Towards New European Theatre (New Dramaturgies)

by Kasia Lech

Multilingual Dramaturgies provides a study of dramaturgical practices in contemporary multilingual theatre in Europe. Featuring interviews with international theatremakers, the book gives an insight into diverse approaches towards multilingual theatre and its dramaturgy that reflect cultural, political, and economic landscapes of contemporary Europe, its inhabitants, and its theatres. First-hand accounts are contextualized to reveal a complex set of negotiations involved in the creative and political tasks of staging multilingualism and engaging the audience, as well as in practical issues like funding and developing working models. Using interviews with practitioners from a diverse range of theatrical backgrounds and career levels, and with various models of financial support, Multilingual Dramaturgies also offers an insight into different attitudes towards multilingualism in European theatres. The book illuminates not only the potential for multilingual dramaturgies, but also the practical and creative difficulties involved in making them. By bringing the voices of artists together and providing a critical commentary, the book reveals multilingual dramaturgies as webbed practices of differences that also offer new ways of understanding and performing identity in a European context. Multilingual Dramaturgies sheds light on an exciting theatre practice, argues for its central role in Europe and highlights potential directions for its further development.

YOU ARE GOING TO DIE and THIS IS NOT CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT (Modern Plays)

by Adam Scott-Rowley

Existential Figure silently screams. Everything is wiped clean. The fabric of reality starts to fall apart.Grieving Figure finds themself on a hillside.Eyes staring back from the darkness.A dual edition of actor, writer and theatre practitioner Adam Scott-Rowley's most impactful works to date.Performed entirely naked, YOU ARE GOING TO DIE is a nail-biting descent into existential anxiety as humanity stares down the proverbial toilet. A surreal meditation on annihilation that rests on the knife edge between physical theatre and performance art. Ideograms and archetypal forms offer a shared purge illuminating the darkest corners of the human psyche while revealing compassion and humour in the most unlikely of places.THIS IS NOT CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT is a brutally intense and darkly comic piece that unveils the bizarre, compulsive and eccentric nature of humanity. Thunderous and fiercely grotesque, this piece utilises Adam Scott-Rowley's practice of The Sensitised Theatre to create a sharp political comment on contemporary society. This edition was published to coincide with YOU ARE GOING TO DIE playing at Southwark Playhouse, London, in April 2024 produced by The Production Exchange.

Jocelyn Bioh: Merry Wives; Nollywood Dreams; School Girls, Or, The African Mean Girls Play (Methuen Drama Play Collections)

by Jocelyn Bioh

"Ms. Bioh, a native New Yorker whose parents emigrated from Ghana in 1968, has made it her mission, theatrically and personally, to tell stories about African and African-American characters that buck expectation and defy stereotype." (New York Times) This first collection of plays from American contemporary playwright Jocelyn Bioh brings together a trilogy of celebrated work recently seen in New York and around the world. Merry Wives: Set in South Harlem, amidst a vibrant and eclectic community of West African immigrants, Merry Wives is a New York story about tricks of the heart. A raucous spinoff featuring the Bard's most beloved comic characters, this hilarious farce tells the story of the trickster Falstaff and the wily wives who outwit him in a new celebration of Black joy, laughter, and vitality. Nollywood Dreams: It's the nineties and in Lagos, Nigeria, the "Nollywood" film industry is exploding. Looking to make the first Nollywood film with Western crossover appeal, Gbenga Ezie, Nigeria's hottest director, has decided to host an open casting call for the female lead of his new romantic drama/thriller "The Comfort Zone." Casting for the film draws on more emotions than expected in this imagining of what the growing Nollywood film scene was like as it rose to become the phenomenon it is today.School Girls; Or The African Mean Girls Play: Paulina, the reigning queen bee at Ghana's most exclusive boarding school, has her sights set on the Miss Universe pageant. But the arrival of Ericka, a new student with undeniable talent and beauty, captures the attention of the pageant recruiter--and Paulina's hive-minded friends. This buoyant and biting comedy explores the universal similarities (and glaring differences) facing teenage girls across the globe. How far would you go to be queen bee?

Shakespeare and Nonhuman Intelligence (Elements in Shakespeare Performance)

by null Heather Warren-Crow

The Infinite Monkey Theorem is an idea frequently encountered in mass market science books, discourse on Intelligent Design, and debates on the merits of writing produced by chatbots. According to the Theorem, an infinite number of typing monkeys will eventually generate the works of Shakespeare. Shakespeare and Nonhuman Intelligence is a metaphysical analysis of the Bard's function in the Theorem in various contexts over the past century. Beginning with early-twentieth century astrophysics and ending with twenty-first century AI, it traces the emergence of Shakespeare as the embattled figure of writing in the age of machine learning, bioinformatics, and other alleged crimes against the human organism. In an argument that pays close attention to computer programs that instantiate the Theorem, including one by biologist Richard Dawkins, and to references in publications on Intelligent Design, it contends that Shakespeare performs as an interface between the human and our Others: animal, god, machine.

Player Kings: Shakespeare's Henry IV Parts 1 & 2 (Nhb Classic Plays Ser.)

by William Shakespeare

The crown meets the criminals. Welcome to England. Hal wasn't born to be king. Only now, it seems, he will be. His father longs for him to leave behind his friends in the taverns of Eastcheap, most notably the infamous John Falstaff. War is on the horizon. But will Hal ever come good? Adapted by award-winning writer and director Robert Icke, Player Kings brings together two of Shakespeare's great history plays, Henry IV Parts 1 & 2, in a visionary new version. It opened at the Noël Coward Theatre, London, in 2024, before embarking on a UK tour. It was directed by Robert Icke, with a cast including Toheeb Jimoh, Richard Coyle and Ian McKellen as Falstaff. 'Robert Icke has an uncanny ability to get to the psychological heart of a classic text. [This is] a terrific take on one of the greatest plays ever written' - Time Out 'A national epic of power-play, racing from tavern to court and field of conflict. It's as propulsive as The Crown… heart-stopping… a must-witness' - Telegraph 'Robert Icke, the neon-intellect, rapid-action director, has spliced together the two separate plays of Henry IV to make an epic portrait… striking and unsentimental… devastating' - Observer 'Unforgettable… brings out the subtleties and violence of Shakespeare's plays' - Financial Times 'An incisive and intelligent adaptation… This rich, vivid and visceral version of Shakespeare's Henry IV is at once a skewering of the mythology of Englishness and patriotism, a shrewd overview of the current state of the nation and a piece of premium classical theatre… all conveyed with pin-sharp clarity and an arresting immediacy… Icke delineates the oppositions that Shakespeare set up without labouring the point or simplifying the characters' complex humanity' - The Stage 'Richly complex and thrilling' - Guardian

The Cord (Nhb Modern Plays Ser.)

by Bijan Sheibani

Ash and Anya were happy, just the two of them. Then the baby came. Ash has spent the first two weeks of his son's life trying to work out where he fits. He watches his mother holding her grandchild for the first time, mesmerised by the mystery and delight of a new life. After she leaves, Ash watches Anya feeding their son – so close, almost intertwined. As sleepless nights, relentless crying and hushed arguments take their toll, a storm starts to grow as a chasm widens between Ash and his son, his wife and even his own mother. Lifting the roof off one family's home, The Cord is a brutally honest and moving insight into the challenging truths of family dynamics. It premiered at the Bush Theatre, London, in 2024, written and directed by Bijan Sheibani. 'Daringly original… has the tinge of lived experience… excellent on the fractious micro-aggressions that can abruptly blossom into furious rows between a couple juggling what is simultaneously the wondrous, commonplace and often brain-destroying reality of new parenthood… feels instantly recognisable and true' - Telegraph 'Acutely observed and often searingly familiar… a valuable piece not just for any new parent or grandparent, but for anyone navigating current relationships through the ghosts of past ones… feels both universal and deeply personal, highlighting a rarely-spoken truth of parenting: children have a way of finding us out' - WhatsOnStage 'Powerfully intimate and highly relatable… very well-observed: it feels like a fly-on-the-wall documentary of the blurry first few months of being a parent. It nails the exhaustion, the rows, the anxiety, the joy – and the slow tectonic realisation that the parent you will be is not necessarily the one you want to be, and is coloured, shadowed, by the baby you were… sensitive and intelligent' - Time Out 'Tackles the under-explored topic of male post-partum depression with bravery and nuance' - The Stage

It was commissioned and developed by Fifth Word, and first produced in 2024 by Fifth Word and Nottingham Playhouse in association with Brixton House, and directed by Milli Bhatia. 'You've all heard a hundred different versions of what happened. We're here to tell you how it really went down.' 'Real polemical power… builds to an action-adventure heist that would make Ms Marvel proud… bite and purpose' - Guardian
