Access to B-ISDN via PONs: ATM Communication in Practice

by Ulrich Killat

It is with great pleasure that I respond to the kind invitation of the BAF project to contribute prefatory remarks to this account of their work, carried out under the auspices of the RACE Programme (Research and Development in Advanced Communications in Europe). The objective of the RACE Programme was to support the intro duction of Integrated Broadband Communications in the European Union. An important part of this overall objective was served by the BAF project, which has aimed to produce a cost-effective access facility for broadband networks, especially for residential and small business customers. As this book relates, in order to do so the project consortium merged two advanced communications technologies, ATM and PON, with contributions from many other disciplines, to create a demon strator which has been subject to extensive trials and testing which have been fruitful both in contributions to international standards and in development work to improve further future generations of the system. This book forms an important reference source through the experience gained in this unique experiment in advanced telecommunications. Another significant feature of the project should not be overlooked however. When the European Commission first began looking at supporting industrial research in Europe in the mid-1980s, it was clear that we had important strengths in telecommunications. It was equally clear that a revolution was on the way - the digital revolution - and European pre-eminence in the field was not guaranteed for ever.

Accelerating Network Functions Using Reconfigurable Hardware: Design and Validation of High Throughput and Low Latency Network Functions at the Access Edge (Springer Theses)

by Ralf Kundel

This book reports on new concepts and methods to design network functions on programmable hardware to accelerate connectivity. First, it introduces the host bypassing concept for improved integration of hardware accelerators in computer systems operating 5G radio access networks. This novel concept bypassed the system’s main memory and established direct connectivity between the accelerator and network interface card. This concept leads to improved throughput and significantly lowered latency jitter compared to existing methods. Second, the book analyzes different programmable hardware technologies for hardware-accelerated Internet subscriber handling, including three P4-programmable platforms and FPGAs. It shows that all the approaches have excellent performance and are suitable for Internet access creation. In turn, it presents a fully-fledged accelerated User Plane Function (UPF) designed upon these concepts and its testing in an end-to-end 5G standalone network. Third, it analyses and demonstrates the usability of Active Queue Management (AQM) algorithms on programmable hardware as an expansion to the access edge. It shows the feasibility of the CoDel AQM algorithm and discusses the challenges and constraints to be considered when limited hardware is used, resulting in significant improvements in the Quality of Service. Furthermore, the P4STA measurement framework is introduced, a network function benchmarking concept combing precise hardware-based time measurement methods with software-based load generation to simultaneously ensure high measurement accuracy and flexibility. Researchers and professionals will find in this book new solutions to improve both fixed and mobile internet access networks, offering an informative and inspiring reading for researchers and professionals involved in building the next generation of access edge networks and underlying technology.

Academic Literacy and the Nature of Expertise: Reading, Writing, and Knowing in Academic Philosophy

by Cheryl Geisler

The first full-length account integrating both the cognitive and sociological aspects of reading and writing in the academy, this unique volume covers educational research on reading and writing, rhetorical research on writing in the disciplines, cognitive research on expertise in ill-defined problems, and sociological and historical research on the professions. The author produced this volume as a result of a research program aimed at understanding the relationship between two concepts -- literacy and expertise -- which traditionally have been treated as quite separate phenomena. A burgeoning literature on reading and writing in the academy has begun to indicate fairly consistent patterns in how students acquire literacy practices. This literature shows, furthermore, that what students do is quite distinct from what experts do. While many have used these results as a starting point for teaching students "how to be expert," the author has chosen instead to ask about the interrelationship between expert and novice practice, seeing them both as two sides of the same project: a cultural-historical "professionalization project" aimed at establishing and preserving the professional privilege. The consequences of this "professionalization project" are examined using the discipline of academic philosophy as the "site" for the author's investigations. Methodologically unique, these investigations combine rhetorical analysis, protocol analysis, and the analysis of classroom discourse. The result is a complex portrait of how the participants in this humanistic discipline use their academic literacy practices to construct and reconstruct a great divide between expert and lay knowledge. This monograph thus extends our current understanding of the rhetoric of the professions and examines its implications for education.

Academic Advancement in Composition Studies: Scholarship, Publication, Promotion, Tenure

by Richard C. Gebhardt Barbara Genelle Smith Gebhardt

This volume deals with a number of related issues that are becoming increasingly crucial for English studies during this time when most faculty in the field are assistant professors approaching tenure review or associate professors seeking promotion. These critical issues focus on: * The diversity of research and scholarly publication in composition studies; * The fact that composition studies faculty are often evaluated by personnel committee members, department chairs, and deans unfamiliar with the nature and demands of the field; * The way that American higher education is rethinking "scholarship" and the role it plays in the work and evaluation of faculty members; and * The role composition studies faculty can play in this review of scholarship and professional advancement. This book seeks to address the entire spectrum of "composition studies" -- expository and argumentative writing, personal essay, literary nonfiction, technical and business writing, historical rhetoric, empirical research, and more -- by understanding the nature of and evaluating the work of faculty members in this broad field. Scholarship and advancement issues are discussed in a variety of situations including basic and regular first-year composition classes at four-year and two-year institutions or writing centers, advanced writing courses, ESL and skills-development programs, and writing classes and programs for teachers, administrators, and researchers. The chapters focus on a variety of subjects, including the importance of mentoring and faculty development in all departments and institutions; and how young scholar-teachers and assistant professors can prepare for a successful personnel or tenure review.

The Abusive Customer: Breaking the Silence Around Customers’ Aggressive Behavior

by Ivaylo Yorgov

Breaking the silence around an all-too-common problem, this book offers insights into the triggers of customer aggression against service employees, explores its consequences, and provides practical advice for handling abusive customers and mitigating the damage they inflict. Today, more than half of the world’s population is employed in the service sector. This fundamental economic shift is accompanied by heightened attention to customer service and the ‘customer is always right’ paradigm. But when customers act aggressively, everyone pays a price: frontline employees, their families, their companies, and even the abusive customers themselves. Unlike breezier titles on the subject, this book is based in academic research—exploring the ‘why?’ and ‘when?’ behind abusive behavior—that underpins its practical approach, illustrated with real-world stories from professionals on the front lines of customer service. The book’s useful tools include a sample anti-customer abuse policy and management process, a cheat sheet of practices that work for handling its consequences, a summary of effective service recovery processes and practices, and abuse-handling training list and curriculum templates. Managers and workers in customer-facing roles, in industries such as retail, hospitality, tourism, banking, and contact centers, will welcome this essential resource as part of their efforts to stop aggressive customer behavior, and improve employee morale, job satisfaction, and engagement.
