Marketing Intelligent Systems Using Soft Computing: Managerial and Research Applications (Studies in Fuzziness and Soft Computing #258)

by Jorge Casillas Francisco J. Martínez López

Dr. Jay Liebowitz Orkand Endowed Chair in Management and Technology University of Maryland University College Graduate School of Management & Technology 3501 University Boulevard East Adelphi, Maryland 20783-8030 USA jliebowitz@umuc. edu When I first heard the general topic of this book, Marketing Intelligent Systems or what I’ll refer to as Marketing Intelligence, it sounded quite intriguing. Certainly, the marketing field is laden with numeric and symbolic data, ripe for various types of mining—data, text, multimedia, and web mining. It’s an open laboratory for applying numerous forms of intelligentsia—neural networks, data mining, expert systems, intelligent agents, genetic algorithms, support vector machines, hidden Markov models, fuzzy logic, hybrid intelligent systems, and other techniques. I always felt that the marketing and finance domains are wonderful application areas for intelligent systems, and this book demonstrates the synergy between marketing and intelligent systems, especially soft computing. Interactive advertising is a complementary field to marketing where intelligent systems can play a role. I had the pleasure of working on a summer faculty f- lowship with R/GA in New York City—they have been ranked as the top inter- tive advertising agency worldwide. I quickly learned that interactive advertising also takes advantage of data visualization and intelligent systems technologies to help inform the Chief Marketing Officer of various companies. Having improved ways to present information for strategic decision making through use of these technologies is a great benefit.

Marketing Island Destinations

by Acolla Lewis-Cameron Sherma Roberts

Over the past three decades, tourism has emerged as a major force in the global economy, with most countries, whether developed or developing, having increasing opportunities to participate, as both host and guest, in this socioeconomic phenomenon. Competition for a share of the tourism market has intensified as rapid tourism developments have been undertaken by various destinations in an attempt to reap those economic benefits from one of the world’s leading industries. The growth in tourism has propelled significant changes in the way in which destinations are managed and marketed. The challenge for many small island destinations is how to become or remain competitive. It is against this background that destination marketing has assumed the critical role of ensuring that the destination lifecycle does not enter into a stage of saturation and decline and the destination is able to adapt to the changing marketplace, seize opportunities and sustain its vitality. This book takes a holistic approach and considers marketing from a macro perspective, from the view of the destination.

Marketing Methods to Improve Company Strategy: Applied Tools and Frameworks to Improve a Company’s Competitiveness Using a Network Approach

by Marcos Fava Neves Luciano Thome e Castro Matheus Alberto Consoli

The authors of this book present several central business methods throughout all chapters. Every method introduced in Marketing Methods to Improve Company Strategy has a strong market driven philosophy. These methods are intended to adjust the firm to consumer needs, considering the presence of competitors in their marketplace. In addition, the book wants to show how it may be used when working with marketing and sales management. Another important theme of this book is the idea that a firm is seen as a network. This network philosophy is an important theme throughout the book, and should open managers’ eyes to potential joint marketing activities, as well as joint ventures, other types of contracts and partnerships in a world of firms’ fuzzy boundaries.

Marketing Theory: Foundations, Controversy, Strategy, and Resource-advantage Theory

by Shelby D. Hunt

One of the true classics in Marketing is now thoroughly revised and updated. "Marketing Theory" is both evolutionary and revolutionary. As in earlier editions, Shelby Hunt focuses on the marketing discipline's multiple stakeholders. He articulates a philosophy of science-based 'tool kit' for developing and analyzing theories, law-like generalizations, and explanations in marketing science. Hunt adds a new dimension to the book, however, by developing arguments for the position that Resource-Advantage Theory provides the foundation for a general theory of marketing and a theoretical foundation for business and marketing strategy. Also new to this edition are four chapters adapted and updated from Hunt's "Controversy in Marketing Theory" that analyze the 'philosophy debates' within the field, including controversies with respect to scientific realism, qualitative methods, truth, and objectivity.
