Engineering Construction Specifications: The Road to Better Quality, Lower Cost, Reduced Litigation

by J. Goldbloom

For the past 25 years, Joe Goldbloom and I have conducted a running debate over whether specifications writers engage in the unlawful practice of law. Joe's position is that lawyers have no business writing specifications, that being the designer's province. Having been given the honor to write this foreword, I have the opportunity for the last word, at least for now. Joe Goldbloom and I first met in 1964, while serving together on the ASCE Committee on Contract Administration. Joe became my teacher, mentor, and friend. Underlying our good natured debate was the serious issue of the technical qualifications required of a specifications writer. As a matter of fact, specifi cations writing traditionally has fallen in a crack between the two professions. Specifications writing typically is neither taught in engineering school nor in law school. Engineers are taught how to design; lawyers are taught how to draft contracts. Specifications writing requires mastery of the technical elements of design as well as the skills of contract drafting. Specifications writing is neither glamorous nor sexy; it is often viewed as a necessary evil of the designer's job.

Engineering Quality Software: A Review of Current Practices, Standards and Guidelines including New Methods and Development Tools

by D.J. Smith K.B. Wood

During the 18 months since the publication of the 1st edition the practice of software quality and the availability of tools and guidance for its implementation has increased dramatically. The emphasis on the need for formal methods has increased and calls for certification of safety critical software are now common. In particular this 2nd edition: -Expands the treatment of static analysis and includes a com prehensive but simple example in order to illustrate clearly the functions of each analyser in Chapter 8. -Describes formal requirements languages more fully in Chapter 6. -Updates the compendium of available guidelines and standards in Chapter 5. -Expands the description of the many high level languages in Chapter 9. -Improves and expands the exercise into a 49 page case study consisting of a documentation hierarchy for a safety system in Chapter 14. It is seeded with deliberate errors and ambiguities and now includes guidance in finding them.

by G. Hachtel

by Axel Kemper Manfred Meyer

Environmental Stress in Plants: Biochemical and Physiological Mechanisms (Nato ASI Subseries G: #19)

by Joe H. Cherry

Environmental stresses represent the most limiting factors to agricultural productivity worldwide. Their impact is not only on presently cultivated crops, they are also significant barriers to the introduction of crop plants in noncultivated areas. A significant global problem in the improvement of agriculture is the major variation in annual crop yields due to variations in environmental stresses such as drought, flooding, salinity, and temperature variations. This summary presents current background and research knowledge on all important environmental stresses and their respective influence on plant growth, development and crop yield as well as on biochemical and physiological events within plant tissues in reaction to changing environmental conditions.

Environments at Risk: Case Histories of Impact Assessment

by Derek Ellis

Environments at Risk is designed as an introductory text and uses case histories of environmental impact assessment to raise issues important in controlling environmental problems. This approach is novel as is the concentration on assessment procedures. In his twenty years of involvement with such cases, Professor Ellis developed his own method of approach for auditing environmental impact assessments, a method which will help readers appraise similar cases in which they are involved, either as concerned citizen, environmental managers or assessors.

Enzymes of Psychrotrophs in Raw Food

by Robin C. McKellar

This book draws together theoretical and applied aspects of extracellular hydrolytic enzymes in spoilage, and thus provides information and analysis of interest to microbiologists and biochemists, as well as up-to-date methods and recommendations of value to food scientists and processors. The first section deals with psychrotroph proteinases, lipases, and phospholipases in milk and dairy products, and covers such aspects as producer microorganisms, biochemical classification of enzymes, physical and biochemical properties, thermal stability, regulation and control of synthesis and assay methods. Particular emphasis is placed on commercially important areas such as physical and biochemical effects in food components and influence on shelf life and product quality. The problems of standardization and control of enzymes in dairy products, as well as areas for future research, are critically examined. The poorly understood role of psychrotroph extracellular enzymes in meat, fish, and poultry is also discussed in a separate section under such headings as physical and biochemical effects on tissue and contribution to growth and penetration of the producer organism.

Ermittlung modaler Parameter aus Übertragungsfrequenzgängen (iwb Forschungsberichte #20)

by Peter Kirchknopf

by Dieter Hogrefe

Estimating and Choosing: An Essay on Probability in Practice

by Georges Matheron

Ever since the beginning of modern probability theory in the seventeenth century there has been a continuous debate over the meaning and applicability of the concept of probability. This book presents a coherent and well thoughtout framework for the use of probabilistic models to describe unique phenomena in a purely objective way. Although Estimating and Choosing was written with geostatistical applications in mind, the approach is of general applicability across the whole spectrum of probabilistic modelling. The only full-fledged treatment of the foundations of practical probability modelling ever written, this book fills an important gap in the literature of probability and statistics.

Estimation, Control, and the Discrete Kalman Filter (Applied Mathematical Sciences #71)

by Donald E. Catlin

In 1960, R. E. Kalman published his celebrated paper on recursive min imum variance estimation in dynamical systems [14]. This paper, which introduced an algorithm that has since been known as the discrete Kalman filter, produced a virtual revolution in the field of systems engineering. Today, Kalman filters are used in such diverse areas as navigation, guid ance, oil drilling, water and air quality, and geodetic surveys. In addition, Kalman's work led to a multitude of books and papers on minimum vari ance estimation in dynamical systems, including one by Kalman and Bucy on continuous time systems [15]. Most of this work was done outside of the mathematics and statistics communities and, in the spirit of true academic parochialism, was, with a few notable exceptions, ignored by them. This text is my effort toward closing that chasm. For mathematics students, the Kalman filtering theorem is a beautiful illustration of functional analysis in action; Hilbert spaces being used to solve an extremely important problem in applied mathematics. For statistics students, the Kalman filter is a vivid example of Bayesian statistics in action. The present text grew out of a series of graduate courses given by me in the past decade. Most of these courses were given at the University of Mas sachusetts at Amherst.
