As we approach the beginning of the 21 st century, we are beginning to see the emer­ gence of knowledge management as a natural evolution of the focus and importance of quality in the 1980s and reengineering in the I 990s. Quality placed a huge em­ phasis on getting all employees to use their brainpower better. Reengineering em­ phasized the use of technology to streamline business processes and take out costs. With the lessons of quality and reengineering firmly embedded in our everyday op­ erations (continual cost containment and higher quality is a way of life), businesses are now turning their attention to growth. Growth is a common pursuit. Customers are calling for it. Financial markets are calling for it. Employees are asking for it because they want an exciting and stimu­ lating environment in which to work. If a business doesn't grow, it will eventually die because knowledge workers ofthe 21 st century won't want to work with or for a business that's not growing. Skilled workers have plenty of options to choose from as demand for knowledge workers escalates around the world.

The Political Psychology of Democratic Citizenship (Series in Political Psychology)

While scholars in political science, social psychology, and mass communications have made notable contributions to understanding democratic citizenship, they concentrate on very different dimensions of citizenship. The current volume challenges this fragmentary pattern of inquiry, and adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of citizenship that offers new insights and integrates previously disparate research agendas. It also suggests the possibility of informed interventions aimed at meeting new challenges faced by citizens in modern democracies. The volume is organized around five themes related to democratic citizenship: citizen knowledge about politics; persuasion processes and intervention processes; group identity and perception of individual citizens and social groups; hate crimes and intolerance; and the challenge of rapid changes in technology and mass media. These themes address the key challenges to existing perspectives on citizenship, represent themes that are central to the health of democratic societies, and reflect ongoing lines of research that offer important contributions to an interdisciplinary political psychology perspective on citizenship. In several cases, scholars may be unaware of work in other disciplines on the same topic and might well benefit from greater intellectual commerce. These themes provide excellent opportunities for the interdisciplinary cross-talk that characterizes the contributions to this volume by prominent scholars from psychology, political science, sociology, and mass communications. In the final section, distinguished commentators reflect on different aspects of the scholarly agenda put forth in this volume, including what this body of work suggests about the state of political psychology's contributions to our understanding of these issues. Thus this volume aims to provide a multifaceted, interdisciplinary look at the political psychology of democratic citizenship. Kathrin Borg-Tiburcy untersucht mithilfe teilnehmender Videographie kindliche Ausdrucks- und Gestaltungsprozesse im Alltag einer Kindergartengruppe und fragt danach, wie ästhetische Sinnzusammenhänge entstehen und gemeinschaftlich von Kindern hergestellt werden. Somit werden interaktive Bezüge zwischen den Kindern im Hinblick auf einen intersubjektiven Nach- und Mitvollzug ästhetischen Sinns rekonstruiert. Diese Untersuchung versteht sich als Grundlagenforschung in der qualitativ-rekonstruktiven Kindheitsforschung und verortet sich im Schnittfeld von phänomenologischen und wissenssoziologischen Perspektiven. Empirisches Material wird so gegenstandsverankert theoretisiert und in Überlegungen zu einer allgemeinen Ästhetik für die (frühe) Kindheit überführt.

Im Umgang mit der Macht: Herrschaft und Selbstbehauptung in einem autoritären politischen System

Im Fokus der machtanalytischen Studie stehen die Möglichkeiten der Selbstbehauptung in einem autoritären Herrschaftssystem. Diese Frage wird exemplarisch an zentralen Konflikten zwischen der Staatsmacht der DDR und kritischen, prominenten Autoren (Stefan Heym, Christa Wolf und Wolf Biermann) untersucht. In einem integrativen Forschungsansatz aus politik- und literaturwissenschaftlichen Verfahren werden neben literarischen Texten und offiziellen SED-Quellen auch unveröffentlichte Archivdokumente aus Kulturbürokratie und Verlagen der DDR analysiert. Zur Einordnung der Kritik politischer Akteure wurde ein mehrdimensionales Schema politischer Systemdistanz entwickelt, das durch systematische Begriffsbildung einen kategorialen Beitrag zur Oppositions- und Widerstandsforschung darstellt. Die Ergebnisse ermöglichen einen differenzierten Blick auf die Herrschaftswirklichkeit in der DDR, verdeutlichen aber auch die besonderen Potenziale der Literatur und machen typische Funktionsmechanismen von Diktaturen transparent. So wird aus der detaillierten Analyse einer konkreten historischen Konstellation ein Strukturmodell vielfältiger Selbstbehauptungsstrategien und Herrschaftstechniken herausgearbeitet, das auch zur Interpretation anderer autoritärer Systeme dienen kann.

Madrasas and the Making of Islamic Womanhood

This in-depth ethnography looks at the everyday lives of Muslim students in a girls’ madrasa in India. Highlighting the ambiguities between the students’ espousal of madrasa norms and everyday practice, Borker illustrates how young Muslim girls tactically invoke the virtues of safety, modesty, and piety learnt in the madrasa to reconfigure normative social expectations around marriage, education, and employment. Amongst the few ethnographies on girls’ madrasas in India, this volume focuses on unfolding of young women’s lives as they journey from their home to madrasa and beyond, and thereby problematizes the idealized and coherent notions of piety presented by anthropological literature on female participation in Islamic piety projects. The author uses ethnographic portraits to introduce us to an array of students, many of whom find their aspirational horizon expanded as a result of the madrasa experience. Such stories challenge the dominant media’s representations of madrasas as outmoded religious institutions. Further, the author illustrates how the processes of learning–unlearning and alternate visions of the future emerge as an unanticipated consequence of young women’s engagement with madrasa education.
