Kriegsliteratur von Frauen?: Zur Darstellung des Zweiten Weltkriegs in Autobiographien nach 1960 (Frauen in der Literaturgeschichte #14)
by Cordula MahrWie stellen deutsche Frauen den Zweiten Weltkrieg dar? Die Auseinandersetzung mit Kriegserzählungen von Frauen fehlt bislang in der deutschsprachigen Germanistik. Unter (Welt-)Kriegsliteratur versteht man vor allem Erinnerungsliteratur ehemaliger Soldaten. Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt anhand von 70 Autobiographien deutscher, nicht verfolgter Frauen, daß ein breiter Überlieferungsstrang weiblicher Kriegserfahrung existiert, und bietet eine erste Bestandsaufnahme dieser philologisch weitgehend unerschlossenen „Kriegsliteratur von Frauen“. Das Spektrum der Autorinnen reicht von professionellen Schriftstellerinnen wie Christa Wolf und Eva Zeller über Schauspielerinnen und Politikerinnen bis zu unbekannten Zeitzeuginnen. Berücksichtigt wurden ausschließlich selbständige Veröffentlichungen nach 1960. Auf dieser Basis entsteht nicht nur ein differenziertes Bild frauenspezifischer Kriegserlebnisse wie Luftangriffe, Versorgungsmängel oder Angst vor Vergewaltigung; es kann auch untersucht werden, inwieweit das nachträgliche Wissen um die nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen die Erinnerung an die eigene Lebensgeschichte beeinflußt, inwieweit die eigene Geschichte des Leidtragens mit einer Geschichte des Mitmachens (Thürmer-Rohr) konfrontiert wird. Die Analyse verbindet Ergebnisse der Oral History und feministischen Sozialwissenschaft mit einem sozio-hermeneutischen Ansatz und Gattungs- und Narrationsmodellen von Lejeune und Genette. Eine Lücke der Kriegsliteraturforschung wird ebenso geschlossen wie eine in der Autobiographie-Geschichte. Nicht zuletzt offenbart sich ein Zusammenhang zwischen formaler Gestaltung und der Selbstdarstellung als Opfer. Die selbstkritische Darstellung der eigenen Verstrickung in den Nationalsozialismus sprengt die konventionelle Autobiographieform.

Slowly, against the current, Küba will navigate Europe’s oldest trade route and cultural artery through Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro, Croatia, Hungary, and Slovakia to its heart in Austria. At each stop, in each country, a new work specifically commissioned by Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary is presented in dialogue with Ataman’s installation. Matei Bejenaru, Nedko Solakov, Zelimir Zilnik, Renata Poljak, László Csáki and Szabolcs Pálfi, Anetta Mona Chisa and Lucia Tkácová, Emanuel Danesch and David Rych speak in different tongues through their individual artistic projects about minorities, invisible communities, their migrations, histories and memories, and the survival skills learnt to protect their identity and self-representation. Küba: Journey Against the Current is a local and international project intended to provide an artistic response to the complex challenges presented by recent socio-political developments In Europe.

Labor Mobility and the World Economy

LanghammerAn increasing number of landings of illegal migrants on the coast of Italy and Spain, but also the recent riots, car-burnings, and street battles that occurred all across France and that have been attributed to the migrant community, seem to indicate that migration is likely to stay high on the European policy agenda for some time. The flow of migrants from poor to rich countries does not, however, constitute a typically European problem. V. S. public policy has also been facing a continued (legal and illegal) inflow of labor from different regions, notably Mexico and other Latin American countries. And similar developments in other advanced countries (Australia, Canada) as weil as in selected fast-growing emerging markets in Eastern Europe and East Asia imply that these countries too are being compelled to adjust their public policies in order to relieve migratory pressures and deal with their consequences. The world economy already saw rising cross-border labor flows in the 1990s and most forecasts predict that South-North and South-South migration will re main at relatively high levels over the next decades and possibly even turn into a major global challenge for policy makers in the 21st century.
Labor Movement: How Migration Regulates Labor Markets

Labor Movement suggests that the international migration of workers is necessary for the survival of industrialized economies. The book thus turns the conventional view of international migration on its head: it investigates how migration regulates labor markets, rather than labor markets shaping migration flows. Assuming a critical view of orthodox economic theory, the book illustrates how different legal, social and cultural strategies towards international migrants are deployed and coordinated within the wider neo-liberal project to render migrants and immigrants vulnerable, pushing them into performing distinct economic roles and into subordinate labor market situations. Drawing on social theories associated with Pierre Bourdieu and other prominent thinkers, Labor Movement suggests that migration regulates labor markets through processes of social distinction, cultural judgement and the strategic deployment of citizenship. European and North American case studies illustrate how the labor of international migrants is systematically devalued and how popular discourse legitimates the demotion of migrants to subordinate labor. Engaging with various immigrant groups in different cities, including South Asian immigrants in Vancouver, foreigners and Spätaussiedler in Berlin, and Mexican and Caribbean offshore workers in rural Ontario, the studies seek to unravel the complex web of regulatory labor market processes related to international migration. Recognizing and understanding these processes, Bauder argues, is an important step towards building effective activist strategies and for envisioning new roles for migrating workers and people. Otherwise, a discussion of cultural economies remains suspended in a detached virtualism (Miller, 2000). The idea of the remaking of geographies and cultural economies remains, necessarily, a consistent search to make the subject dynamic in its resonance with the contemporary world. In recent debates concerning the reframing of the cultural economies of geography, there is an evidence of increasing acknowledgement of the overlooked importance of subjectivities within geographical explanation. This has often been difficult when trying to attend to the large scale apparent dynamics of change. The shift of geographies to focus upon cultural economies combines two profound threads that inform this chapter: the acknowledgement of the breadth and inclusivity of what economies are and the refusal mutually to isolate the cultural and the economic. Thus the economic becomes engaged and even framed in relation to the cultural, and vice versa. Such an appraisal makes more robust the limits of ‘either – or’ claims from these two grounding components of geographical thinking and its representation of the world. These themes are sustained in different ways across the chapters of this book. This chapter seeks to build a critical discourse concerning space, embodied practice and lay knowledge. It does this in order to address the mechanisms through which individuals are engaged in the processes of new cultural economies.

In this study of the ways in which teens draw on and play with circulating stereotypes of the self and the other, Reyes uniquely illustrates how individuals can reappropriate stereotypes of their ethnic group as a resource to position themselves and others in interactionally meaningful ways, to accomplish new social actions, and to assign new meanings to stereotypes. This is an important book for academics and students in sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, discourse analysis, and applied linguistics with an interest in issues of youth, race, and ethnicity, and/or educational settings, and will also be of interest to readers in the fields of education, Asian American studies, social psychology, and sociology.
